Cell-cell adhesion as a double-edged sword in tissue fluidity.

Cell migration plays a fundamental role in numerous physiological processes, including embryonic development, wound healing, and cancer metastasis. While cell-cell adhesion is known to regulate motion by shaping cell morphology and intercellular force balance, its dynamic, rate-dependent contributions to tissue behavior remain poorly understood. In this study, we examine how the dissipative nature of cell-cell adhesion influences tissue dynamics and collective migration using an extended vertex model with explicit junctional viscosity. Our findings reveal a nontrivial interplay between two dis

The Genomic Landscape of Metallic Colour Variation in Ground Beetles.

The metallic colour variation of beetles is a spectacular feature that has inspired diverse human cultures. However, little is known about the genetic basis of this trait or its ecological importance. In this study, we characterize the geographical distribution, optical mechanism, genetic basis and ecological and evolutionary importance of metallic colour variation in the Nebria ingens complex, an alpine ground beetle in the Sierra Nevada, California. We find that elytral colour varies continuously across two allopatric species (from black N. ingens to green N. riversi), with hybrid population

Drift and Selection in a Recently Colonized Sea: The Genomic Basis of Adaptation to Low-Salinity Waters in Baltic Harbour Porpoises.

Understanding how demography and natural selection interact during colonization of novel environments is a central question in evolutionary biology. The Baltic Sea region combines one of the world's strongest salinity gradients with a well-characterized postglacial history of less than ~12,000 years. The harbour porpoise (Phocoena phocoena) is distributed across this gradient as three populations-the North Sea, Belt Sea and Proper Baltic Sea populations. Using whole genome resequencing data from 59 individuals, we reconstructed the demographic history of Baltic colonization and identified geno

Chilling Out or Heating Up? Thermal Plasticity of Seminal Fluid Proteins in Drosophila melanogaster.

Seminal fluid proteins (SFPs) play crucial roles in reproduction by shaping female post-mating physiology and behaviour, male sperm competition and sexual conflict between the sexes. However, we know little about how abiotic ecological factors regulate SFP expression and transfer. Here, we use quantitative proteomics in adult flies from a wild Drosophila melanogaster population to test how exposure to natural temperature variation (20°C, 24°C and 28°C) across two time scales (48 h and 13d), and under either no- or high-sperm competition risk, interact to shape SFP production and transfer. Genomic Islands of Divergence Reveal Signature of Selection on the Alternate Homeolog in Upper Fraser River Sockeye Run-Timing Groups.

Effective wildlife conservation and management depends on a thorough understanding of both neutral and adaptive intraspecific genomic variation. Population structure is often well understood in many ecologically or economically important species, but the extensive population genomic resources required to characterize putatively adaptive variation and punctuated genomic regions is typically only recently available for some species, if available at all. Here, we explore recently published whole-genome resequencing data in the upper Fraser River and identify a large island of divergence separatin

Assessment of genetically modified maize Bt11 × MIR162 × MON 89034 × NK603 (application GMFF-2025-33624).

Genetically modified maize Bt11 × MIR162 × MON 89034 × NK603 was developed by crossing to combine four single events: Bt11, MIR162, MON 89034 and NK603. The maize Bt11 × MIR162 × MON 89034 × NK603 expresses the Cry1Ab, PAT, Vip3Aa20, PMI, Cry1A.105, Cry2Ab2, CP4 EPSPS and CP4 EPSPS L214P proteins to confer protection against certain lepidopteran pests, tolerance to glufosinate- and glyphosate-containing herbicides and to be used as a selectable marker. The GMO Panel previously assessed the four single maize events and seven of the sub-combinations and did not identify safety concerns. No new d

Removing records on animals and nonhumans in Ovid Embase: a comparison of 11 filters.

OBJECTIVE: To understand and compare the impact of 11 filters to remove records on animals or nonhumans in Ovid Embase, which are routinely used despite there being no performance data for them. To understand the indexing of relevant subject headings in Embase. METHODS: To assess filter performance, we screened and categorized 3,000 records as 'should be removed' or 'should be retained' and calculated the sensitivity, specificity, and overall accuracy for each filter. We also reported on the number of records with human participants or data that were incorrectly removed by each filter. RESUL

Demographic Factors Influencing the Need for Repeat Radiofrequency Ablation in Chronic Pain Management: A Retrospective Study.

BACKGROUND: Radiofrequency ablation (RFA) is a common noninvasive intervention for chronic pain management; however, the large variability in patient response underscores the need to better understand factors impacting treatment and patient outcomes. This study investigated whether demographic variables, specifically race, sex, age, and body mass index (BMI), are associated with the frequency of repeat RFA procedures in patients with chronic pain. METHODS: This retrospective case series study was conducted at a single outpatient academic pain management clinic. A total of 170 clinic patients

Expanded characterization of the valproic acid zebrafish larval model of autism spectrum disorder: Insights into dysregulation in the gut.

BACKGROUND: Relative lack of data on mechanisms underpinning poor gastrointestinal (GI) health in autism spectrum disorder (ASD) limits patient management strategies. Although the valproic acid (VPA) model of ASD is widely used, a comprehensive profile of the model in zebrafish is still lacking, and almost no data are available on ASD-like GI symptomology or underlying mechanisms. METHODS: ASD-like craniofacial morphology, anxiety-like behavior, GI anatomical and functional dysregulation, and dysregulation of the monoaminergic system in both the brain and the gut were simultaneously assessed

Game played by tandem-running ants: Hint of procedural rationality.

Navigation during colony relocation by the tandem-running ants, Diacamma indicum, is a tour de force of biological traffic coordination, as this directly impact the survival and fitness of the whole colony. Even on one-lane paths, the ants tactfully manage a bidirectional flow: An informed individual (termed leader) guides one nest mate (termed follower) to a new optimal nest, and then returns to recruit additional followers (one follower at a time). We propose that encounters between the ants moving in opposite directions can be modeled within the framework of game theory, leading to an under

Changes in hoof morphology in racing Thoroughbreds during a period of ninety days unshod.

BACKGROUND: Low hoof angles and discrepancies in the dorsal heel are linked to musculoskeletal breakdown, suspensory apparatus failure, and retirement in Thoroughbred racehorses. Evidence-based research on correcting hoof adaptations is limited, which leads to a reliance on therapeutic shoeing. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to test the hypothesis that morphological changes occur during active unshod training and that trimming immediately affects hoof angles. STUDY DESIGN: This is a controlled, quantitative, longitudinal study that uses a convenience sample. METHODS: A total of 36 racehorses

Evolutionary Inferences Based on Thoracic Limb Muscles of South American Coati (Nasua nasua): Brachium and Craniolateral Antebrachium.

The South American coati (Nasua nasua) is a mammal of the order Carnivora and family Procyonidae, characterized by scansorial locomotion. Accordingly, several anatomical and functional studies examined its thoracic limbs. Nevertheless, the anatomical descriptions and terminology differ among those studies, and none considered the evolutionary derivations of the brachium and antebrachium muscles based on topology, innervation and anatomical variants. Therefore, the present study aimed to infer the muscle derivations and reconstruct muscle maps of the brachial and craniolateral antebrachial musc

A trifluoromethyl-triggered J-aggregation switch for Cu+-Responsive fluorescence imaging and in vivo application in mice.

Herein, we elucidate the structural basis of J-aggregation in our previously reported dual-locked fluorescent probe HBimmCue, a trifluoromethyl-substituted sensor for neuronal mitochondrial Cu+. By designing a methyl-substituted control probe HBimmCH3, we demonstrate that the trifluoromethyl group is the critical moiety triggering J-aggregation in PBS. This aggregation enables HBimmCue to function through a photoinduced electron transfer (PET) + J-aggregation-caused quenching (J-ACQ) dual-quenching mechanism, affording an exceptional 59-fold fluorescence turn-on response. In contrast, HBimmCH3

Trawling the depths of gene regulation: transcription-factor families orchestrating immunity in teleost fish.

Transcription factors act as central regulators of immune responses by integrating signals from immunological pathways and translating them into cell type-specific gene-expression programmes. Dynamic networks of transcription factors and co-factors control the activation, polarisation and functional specialisation of immune cells, thereby coordinating the magnitude, timing and specificity of responses to pathogenic stimuli whilst promoting the restoration of homeostasis. Although immune-relevant transcription factors have been extensively studied in mammals, the molecular principles governing
