OBJECTIVE: Fine needle aspiration (FNA) cytology has been successfully utilized in the preoperative diagnosis of oral masses. Lymphoma involving other sites has also been diagnosed frequently on FNA. Oral cavity lymphoma (OL) is rare and is clinically indistinguishable from other lesions of the mouth. A complete excision of these may be difficult. Our experience with FNA diagnosis of 11 OLs along with histopathological correlation is reported herein in a tertiary health care setting.
METHODS: In this retrospective study, clinico pathological characteristics of patients with final diagnosis of

OBJECTIVES: Post tonsillectomy hemorrhage (PTH) is a common complication of tonsillectomy. Our objectives were to: 1) Examine the postoperative course of patients presenting to St. Christopher's Hospital for Children (SCHC) with PTH; 2) Compare patients with and without a blood clot visualized in the tonsillar fossa at time of presentation to determine if outcomes regarding return to the operating room (OR) differ.
METHODS: This was a retrospective chart review conducted at an academic, tertiary, pediatric hospital in an urban setting. Pediatric patients who underwent a tonsillectomy with con

The glossopharyngeal nerve (CN IX) provides innervation to the parotid gland, carotid body/sinus, mucosa of the middle ear, tongue and oropharynx and the stylopharyngeus muscle. The vagus nerve provides innervation to the remaining skeletal muscle of the pharynx. CN IX contributes to the pharyngeal plexus and normally provides innervation to the mucosa of the oropharynx. Herein, we describe a previously undescribed variation of CN IX. CN IX was observed to enter the pharyngeal wall but instead of forming terminal branches in the tonsillar fossa, CN IX descended along the posterior wall between

We reviewed the indications, peroperative feasibility, and postoperative clinical outcomes of our first 50 consecutive patients who underwent free flap reconstruction after TORS for complex pharyngeal defects at our institution. We analyzed indications according to previous radiotherapy, the size of the resection, and the transoral exposure of critical structures. We reviewed surgical data, postoperative complications, and functional outcomes comprising tracheostomy and alimentation management. Indications were upfront surgery (34%), a second primary surgery after radiotherapy (28%), or salvag

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Schwannomas are benign tumors commonly found in the cranial vault at the cerebellopontine angle. Schwannomas could arise from any nerve that has Schwann sheath. Their most common extra-cranial localization is the parapharyngeal space. Schwannomas do not usually metastasize, and recurrence is uncommon.
CASE PRESENTATION: We present a case of a sympathetic trunk schwannoma in a patient that presented with dysphagia and a painful neck mass. Oro-pharyngeal examination revealed the presence of a mass filling-up the left tonsillar fossa, and pushing the uvula to the rig

Despite the availability of different classes of drugs for the treatment of depressive and anxiety disorders, there are a number of clinically significant unmet needs, such as a high prevalence of treatment resistance, partial response, subsyndromal symptomatology, recurrence and relapse. With the approval of atypical antipsychotics, which are associated with a lower adverse effect burden than typical antipsychotics, consideration of their off-label use for the treatment of affective disorders and various other psychiatric disorders has become a viable option. However, consideration should be

INTRODUCTION: Sarcomas of the head and neck region account for less than 10% of soft tissue sarcomas, and comprise less than 1% of head and neck malignancies. Approximately 80% of sarcomas arise from soft tissue, with the remaining originating from bone or cartilage. Head and neck sarcomas typically occur more frequently in men.
CASE REPORT: Our patient was a 30 year old male who presented with a ulceroproliferative mass over the soft palate increasing in size over past 6 months. Punch biopsy of the lesion was suggestive of carcinosarcoma. MRI PNS was suggestive of 38 × 39 × 33 mm sized lobul

The glossopharyngeal nerve lies in close proximity to the tonsillar fossa making it susceptible to injury during tonsillectomy, though it is uncommonly injured in practice. We present a case of severe dysphagia due to glossopharyngeal nerve injury following tonsillectomy and demonstrate the efficacy of the McNeill Dysphagia Therapy Program (MDTP), a novel stepwise exercise-based rehabilitation program, in improving clinical outcomes. In patients with persistent, severe dysphagia following tonsillectomy, glossopharyngeal nerve injury should be on the differential diagnosis. The MDTP is one meth

This is a brief report of a 17-year-old male who presented to the emergency department with odynophagia and a foreign body sensation in the throat after choking on a chicken wing. A soft tissue neck radiograph was performed which revealed a 4.6-cm linear object in the vallecula read by the radiology department as a chicken bone. The otolaryngology team was consulted and performed a nasopharyngeal laryngoscopy which did not reveal a foreign body in the upper aerodigestive tract. On physical examination, the right tonsillar fossa was tender to palpation. Upon further review of the radiograph, th

SETTING: Post-tonsillectomy pain in adults can be severe and is often poorly controlled. Pain can lead to decreased oral intake, bleeding, longer hospital stays, emergency department visits, dehydration, and weight loss. Due to persistent pain despite scheduled medications, other methods for pain control are needed. Local/regional anesthetic options have been previously studied in this population. Unfortunately, neither the injection of local anesthetics into the tonsillar fossa nor the postoperative topical application of local anesthetics to the tonsillar bed has demonstrated efficacy in lar

INTRODUCTION: The management of parapharyngeal space (PPS) tumors is surgical, but the approach remains a challenge. Attention should be paid to avoid intra-operative bleeding, cranial nerves damage, and external scars.
PRESENTATION OF CASE: The authors report a case of a 23-year-old female, with complaint of progressive, painless swelling just below the right angle of the mandible of 6-month's duration. Magnetic resonance imaging images reported the presence of an oval-shaped expansive lesion (maximum diameter 3 cm), from the lower polar region of the parotid gland while fine needle aspirati

PURPOSE: Pain and hemorrhage are common morbidities after tonsillectomy. Although many studies have focused on post-tonsillectomy pain, inadequate researches are available on wound healing. Hence, there is a definite need for a novel technique to facilitate the healing process and thereby improving the post-tonsillectomy recovery.
METHODS: This prospective and randomized study was conducted on 60 adult patients who underwent tonsillectomy. They were divided into two groups of control and amniotic membrane (AM). Human amniotic membrane was applied over the tonsillar bed as a biologic dressing.

INTRODUCTION: Various efforts have been made to reduce post tonsillectomy pain in children. The present study was undertaken to evaluate the efficacy and safety of Ropivacaine in post-operative pain management in these children.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: This study is a Randomized control study on 140 patients between 4 - 12 years of age, in whom tonsillectomy was performed in a tertiary care centre between January 2017 to November 2018 using standard dissection and snare surgical technique. Postoperatively, patients were randomized into 2 groups of 70 patients each, receiving tonsillar fossa in

AIM: To demonstrate the efficacy of a new novel anterior tonsillar fossa approach in management of elongated styloid process syndrome.
MATERIAL AND METHOD: We operated upon 20 patients with confirmed, symptomatic elongated styloid process. None of these patients gave a previous positive history of trauma or any other procedure relating to tonsillar area. All these patients had undergone treatment or were under treatment for neuralgia/TMJ dysfunction syndrome. Diagnosis was confirmed by clinical examination followed by radiological findings.
RESULTS: 12 patients underwent bilateral styloidect

A 20-year-old female presented a history of isolate left external ear pain. ENT valuation showed no alteration of the district, but an aberrant styloid process was tender to palpation in the left tonsillar fossa. Computer tomography was performed and confirmed it. Thereafter, the diagnosis of Eagle syndrome was made. The auricular branch of the vagal nerve (ABVN) was pressed by the styloid process causing the pain. This case pointed out the importance to consider anatomical alteration as elongated styloid process as a possible cause of external ear pain.
