Phase-Controlled Asymmetric Resonances for Enhanced Spectral Slope in a Ge-OI Microring Resonator at 4.2 μm.

Microring resonators (MRRs) are key components of photonic integrated circuits for filtering, modulation, and spectroscopic sensing. In the mid-infrared (mid-IR), asymmetric resonances are attractive because their steep local spectral transitions can enhance wavelength discrimination in compact resonant devices. Here, we demonstrate geometry-controlled asymmetric resonances in a germanium-on-insulator (Ge-OI) MRR at 4.2 μm by introducing a single subwavelength air hole into the bus-waveguide coupling region as a localized phase perturbation. Effective-index analysis shows that the hole geometr

Touch-sensing digital pixel fibre enables interactive garment GUI.

Wearable computing promises to transform human interaction with information, yet conventional graphical user interfaces (GUIs) rely on planar, rigid displays incompatible with textiles, which are composed of one-dimensional fibres. Despite recent progress1,2 in flexible and fibre-based displays, bridging this fundamental dimensional mismatch remains challenging because existing approaches do not naturally provide the digitally addressable, high-throughput, information-rich interfaces required for interactive GUIs. Here we present a digital pixel fibre integrating addressable pixels, a common p

Development and Evaluation of a Transportation Planning e-Tool for Older Adults: Co-Design Study.

BACKGROUND: Older adults often face challenges using digital transportation planning tools to engage in meaningful activities. In Sherbrooke, a Canadian city located in the province of Québec, hilly terrain, bus-based mobility, and varied digital literacy among older adults highlight the need for accessible transportation planning technologies. Despite the growing demand for accessible and inclusive technologies, interfaces are often not tailored to the specific needs and preferences of older adults, making them difficult to use. Addressing this gap is essential to support the mobility and soc

Profound motorcycle risks: a national mileage exposure-adjusted analysis.

BACKGROUND: Motorcycle crashes (MCC) account for a minority of vehicle miles in the United States, but their exposure-adjusted burden among trauma admissions is not well defined. The purpose of this study was to compare the injury burden of MCC versus motor vehicle crashes (MVC) using outcomes standardized by annual vehicle miles traveled (VMT). METHODS: A retrospective cohort study of American College of Surgeons Trauma Quality Programs (ACS-TQP) admissions from 2017 to 2023 was performed for adults aged 18-80 years admitted after MCC or MVC. Primary outcomes were admission, intensive care u

Influence of Temperature and Osmolytes on Conformational Dynamics of Alpha Synuclein.

Alpha-synuclein (α-syn) is an intrinsically disordered protein (IDP) associated with amyloid formation in neurodegenerative diseases, including Parkinson's, dementia with Lewy bodies, and multiple system atrophy. Disease progression is linked to the transition of α-syn from native to misfolded conformations, although the mechanisms underlying this process remain unclear. An effective method for investigating protein dynamics is native mass spectrometry, specifically when coupled with ion mobility-mass spectrometry (IM-MS) to examine differences in the shape and size of various analytes. Urban Infrastructures of Care: Buses as Resources for Recovery and Mental Wellbeing.

Although transport infrastructures are increasingly recognised as determinants of urban wellbeing, their role in trajectories of becoming well and becoming ill has received little empirical and theoretical attention, particularly in serious mental ill-health. This paper examines how bus infrastructures function as everyday resources and obstacles for people living with psychosis. Drawing on qualitative research with young people recovering from early psychosis in Lausanne, Switzerland, we examine the socio-material and affective dimensions of bus mobility through relational geographical perspe

Pulled-up race outcomes as welfare-relevant surveillance indicators in United States Steeplechase horses, 2023-2025.

INTRODUCTION: Pulled-up race outcomes are routinely recorded but are nonspecific, potentially reflecting fatigue, poor performance, footing, rider judgment, suspected injury, or physiological compromise. We evaluated their association with subsequent participation disruption in United States steeplechase horses. METHODS: National Steeplechase Association Race Results Reports from 2023 to 2025 were analyzed retrospectively at the horse-start level. Outcomes were time to the next later-date start, ≥60-day interruption, ≥183-day absence, and no recorded later-date start. Cox models were stratifi

Two psychological pathways to mode-ambiguous riding behaviour among Indonesian E-bike users: The roles of safety attitude and riding confidence.

The rapid growth of electric bicycle (e-bike) use has created a psychologically complex riding context, as ambiguity in vehicle status may shape how riders interpret their role and behave in traffic. This study defines this pattern as Mode-Ambiguous Riding Behaviour (MARB), a concept distinct from general risky riding behaviour because it refers specifically to risk-related decisions arising from uncertainty about e-bike classification and appropriate riding behaviour. Drawing on the Stimulus-Organism-Response (S-O-R) framework, this study examines how socio-psychological and social-environmen

Deep learning coupled with scalable domain-specific structural validation expands RNA virus discovery from metatranscriptomes.

The discovery of RNA viruses from metatranscriptomic data remains challenging due to extreme sequence divergence and length heterogeneity, ranging from massive polyproteins to short assembly artifacts. We present Rider, a two-stage framework that synergizes deep representation learning with scalable domain-specific structural validation. In the first stage, Rider leverages a compact pretrained protein language model to broadly detect highly divergent viral signals. To overcome the inherent input length limitations of language models and accurately capture catalytic core domains, the second sta

System design of the Ultra Mobility Vehicle: A driving, balancing, and jumping bicycle robot.

Trials cyclists and mountain bike riders can hop, jump, balance, and drive on one or both wheels. This versatility allows them to achieve speed and energy efficiency on smooth terrain and agility over rough terrain. Inspired by these athletes, we present the design and control of a robotic platform, Ultra Mobility Vehicle (UMV), that combines a bicycle and a reaction mass to move dynamically with minimal actuated degrees of freedom. We used a simulation-driven design optimization process to synthesize a spatial linkage topology with a focus on vertical jump height and momentum-based balancing

Why Kids Crash: Risk Factors for Pediatric E-Bike Injuries in California.

BACKGROUND: Electric bikes (e-bikes) are increasingly popular, particularly among pediatric riders, and pose a greater risk of serious injury than traditional bicycles due to their higher speeds. However, limited data exist regarding traffic and environmental conditions associated with pediatric e-bike crashes. This study aims to characterize the circumstances surrounding these collisions to better understand risk factors contributing to e-bike crashes. METHODS: A retrospective analysis was conducted of police-reported e-bike collisions involving riders ≤18 years recorded in the Statewide Int

Protocol-Aware Feature-Based Intrusion Detection System for UAVCAN Networks.

Uncomplicated application-level vehicular computing and networking (UAVCAN) is a higher-layer protocol built on the controller area network (CAN) bus to support control and status communication among electronic control units in unmanned aerial vehicles. Because CAN provides no native authentication or encryption, UAVCAN networks are vulnerable to message injection, replay, and flooding attacks. Most existing CAN intrusion detection systems, however, are designed for automotive networks and do not explicitly account for the transfer structure and tail-byte rules of UAVCAN. This paper proposes a

Topology-Guided Sparse Voltage Measurement Placement for Transient-Voltage Fault-Bus Localization: A Physically Governed Dual-System Evaluation.

Sparse voltage measurements make fault-bus localization depend on measurement placement and the physical distinguishability of location labels. We evaluate a deterministic, label-independent topology-guided placement protocol with physically governed localization classes and leakage-resistant condition-level validation on IEEE39 and IEEE123. In the original base protocols, topology-guided CNN1D Top-1 accuracy exceeded the prespecified primary-random layouts by 4.55 and 1.67 percentage points, respectively, although both paired bus-by-condition intervals included zero. Gamified IMU Sensor-Based System for Training Head-Orientation Tasks in Healthy Teenagers: Event-Driven Architecture and Randomised Pilot Feasibility Study.

Sensor systems integrated with gamified environments have increasingly been incorporated into the monitoring of musculoskeletal disorders. This study evaluates the operational feasibility of a motion-capture system based on an inertial measurement unit for training head-orientation tasks. Because a single sensor is placed on the head without thoracic fixation, the system estimates head orientation relative to space rather than isolated cervical motion. The event-driven architecture is organised into five logical layers and uses an asynchronous publish-subscribe bus for data acquisition, sensor
