Pulled-up race outcomes as welfare-relevant surveillance indicators in United States Steeplechase horses, 2023-2025.

INTRODUCTION: Pulled-up race outcomes are routinely recorded but are nonspecific, potentially reflecting fatigue, poor performance, footing, rider judgment, suspected injury, or physiological compromise. We evaluated their association with subsequent participation disruption in United States steeplechase horses. METHODS: National Steeplechase Association Race Results Reports from 2023 to 2025 were analyzed retrospectively at the horse-start level. Outcomes were time to the next later-date start, ≥60-day interruption, ≥183-day absence, and no recorded later-date start. Cox models were stratifi

Two psychological pathways to mode-ambiguous riding behaviour among Indonesian E-bike users: The roles of safety attitude and riding confidence.

The rapid growth of electric bicycle (e-bike) use has created a psychologically complex riding context, as ambiguity in vehicle status may shape how riders interpret their role and behave in traffic. This study defines this pattern as Mode-Ambiguous Riding Behaviour (MARB), a concept distinct from general risky riding behaviour because it refers specifically to risk-related decisions arising from uncertainty about e-bike classification and appropriate riding behaviour. Drawing on the Stimulus-Organism-Response (S-O-R) framework, this study examines how socio-psychological and social-environmen

Innovation on wheels: do-it-yourself assistive technologies in action sports.

PURPOSE: Using adaptive skateboarding and wheelchair motocross as a lens, this paper examines how, why, and in what ways disabled riders use DIY assistive technologies (DIY-AT) to support their mobility and sporting practices. MATERIALS AND METHODS: To address these aims, we interviewed 30 disabled riders and engaged in a reflexive thematic analysis of the transcripts. FINDINGS & DISCUSSION: Adopting a posthuman perspective, the findings demonstrate how disabled riders' entanglements with DIY-AT can reshape possibilities for movement, creativity, and individuality while simultaneously enabli

Deep learning coupled with scalable domain-specific structural validation expands RNA virus discovery from metatranscriptomes.

The discovery of RNA viruses from metatranscriptomic data remains challenging due to extreme sequence divergence and length heterogeneity, ranging from massive polyproteins to short assembly artifacts. We present Rider, a two-stage framework that synergizes deep representation learning with scalable domain-specific structural validation. In the first stage, Rider leverages a compact pretrained protein language model to broadly detect highly divergent viral signals. To overcome the inherent input length limitations of language models and accurately capture catalytic core domains, the second sta

System design of the Ultra Mobility Vehicle: A driving, balancing, and jumping bicycle robot.

Trials cyclists and mountain bike riders can hop, jump, balance, and drive on one or both wheels. This versatility allows them to achieve speed and energy efficiency on smooth terrain and agility over rough terrain. Inspired by these athletes, we present the design and control of a robotic platform, Ultra Mobility Vehicle (UMV), that combines a bicycle and a reaction mass to move dynamically with minimal actuated degrees of freedom. We used a simulation-driven design optimization process to synthesize a spatial linkage topology with a focus on vertical jump height and momentum-based balancing

Why Kids Crash: Risk Factors for Pediatric E-Bike Injuries in California.

BACKGROUND: Electric bikes (e-bikes) are increasingly popular, particularly among pediatric riders, and pose a greater risk of serious injury than traditional bicycles due to their higher speeds. However, limited data exist regarding traffic and environmental conditions associated with pediatric e-bike crashes. This study aims to characterize the circumstances surrounding these collisions to better understand risk factors contributing to e-bike crashes. METHODS: A retrospective analysis was conducted of police-reported e-bike collisions involving riders ≤18 years recorded in the Statewide Int

Adaptive Graph Learning with Persona-Aware Attribution for Event-Resilient Metro Passenger Flow Prediction.

Urban rail passenger flow forecasting, based on large-scale automatic fare collection (AFC) sensor networks, is typically evaluated on ordinary days, yet operators most need accurate predictions during event days. The AFC infrastructure comprises 191 sensor-equipped stations with turnstile transducers that generate 95.7 million discrete sensing events (inboard/outboard readings) over 57 days, constituting a high-velocity, multimodal spatiotemporal sensor stream. This study presents a topology-driven adaptive graph network (TDAG-Net) for event-day forecasting across a full metro system. The mod

Data-Minimizing Motion-Gated Artificial Intelligence Decision Support for Electric Micro-Mobility: An Architecture-Feasibility Study.

Physiological sensing can support electric micro-mobility safety research. Elevated heart rate during riding, however, may reflect physical exertion, psychological stress, motion artefacts, road context, or several of these factors. This paper presents RideSafe-AI, a non-clinical architecture-feasibility prototype. It separates data quality, exertion/load proxy estimation, public-dataset stress-label classification, and motion reliability before applying deterministic fusion and abstention. The Python reference checks input and output fields for raw physiological streams and direct identifiers

CYP2D6-Guided Opioid Therapy for Chronic Pain: A Multi-Center Pragmatic Randomized Controlled Trial.

The analgesic effectiveness of several opioids depends on CYP2D6-mediated metabolism to more active opioid receptor agonists. CYP2D6 activity is impacted by genetic variability and medications that inhibit CYP2D6. We conducted a pragmatic, multi-center, randomized, controlled trial to determine whether CYP2D6-guided opioid prescribing improves chronic pain. Participants were adults recruited from primary care or pain specialty clinics with at least 3 months of chronic pain treated or considered for treatment with tramadol, hydrocodone, or codeine. Participants were randomized to the usual care

Does the different function of the lead vs. trail foot lead to functional asymmetry in balance performance of sub-elite youth cross-country mountain bikers? A pilot study.

BACKGROUND: During descents, cornering, or coasting over obstacles, cross-country mountain bikers use an isometric split stance with horizontally aligned pedals, establishing a distinct "lead" and "trail" leg. This pilot study investigated whether the different functions of the lead compared to the trail foot are associated with inter-limb functional asymmetry (FA) in proactive and reactive balance performance. METHODS: Twelve sub-elite youth cross-country mountain bikers (10 males, age: 13.5 ± 1.7 years, training history: 4.7 years) were assessed. Proactive balance was evaluated using the Y-

Morphological and behavioural predictors of motor laterality in domestic horses: A cross-sectional field study.

Motor laterality in horses affects performance, training, and welfare. A simple morphological marker for laterality would help riders, trainers, and veterinarians identify likely locomotor asymmetries early. This study tested whether observable morphological and behavioural characteristics were associated with rider-perceived motor laterality in domestic horses, using a cross-sectional observational field study design conducted in the Blida and Algiers regions of Algeria. The study included 100 regularly ridden domestic horses. Mane orientation, facial whorl characteristics, standing curvature

Why the colours of modern displays can look so different to different observers.

Normal human colour vision depends on photon absorption in three types of cone photoreceptors (sensors) with different spectral sensitivities. Colour vision is therefore trichromatic. Triplets of primary lights can be mixed to reproduce colours that fall inside the colour space or gamut delimited by each triplet. Older displays with broadband primaries produce a small colour gamut and a relatively limited range of colours, but the colours generally appear similar to different observers. Modern displays with narrowband primaries produce a larger gamut and a wider range of colours, but the colou

Talking About the Anti-Trans Sociopolitical Climate with Transgender and Gender Diverse Children and Their Caregivers.

BACKGROUND: Transgender and gender diverse (TGD) children and adolescents in the United States are currently experiencing an oppressive sociopolitical climate that is likely impacting their mental wellbeing. TGD children, defined as 5- to 10-year-olds, have the capacity to be aware of the anti-trans sociopolitical climate and, within the context of developmental readiness, TGD children and their caregivers may benefit from having conversations about the sociopolitical climate with a mental health provider. However, there are no clinical guidelines for how mental health providers may approach c

Beyond Structure: Protein and Solution Dynamics Shape Ligand-Binding Thermodynamics.

Variable-temperature electrospray ionization native mass spectrometry (vT-ESI nMS) provides a means to determine how temperature-dependent changes in protein and solution dynamics influence individual ligand-binding reactions within multiligand protein complexes. Here, the GroEL single-ring mutant (SR1), which binds up to seven nucleotides, serves as a model system due to its sensitivity to solution conditions. Native MS resolves individual ligand-bound populations, while vT-ESI extends these measurements across temperature (3-43 °C), enabling determination of binding affinities and the associ

Can Large Language Models Diagnose Primary Immunodeficiency from Patient-Described Symptoms?

Patients with primary immunodeficiency (PI) face prolonged diagnostic delays and may increasingly turn to large language models (LLMs) to interpret their symptoms during this period. We evaluated whether an LLM could recognize PI from symptom descriptions derived from interviews with 21 PI patients. In prior work, we showed that GPT-4o identified PI in 96% of cases when prompted with physician-written patient histories (Rider et al., 2025). Here, when prompted with symptom descriptions in patients' own words, GPT-5.2 identified PI in only 7 cases (33%), although it suggested general immune sys
