Motion-enhanced resolution in dynamic single-pixel imaging.

Single-pixel imaging uses a single-pixel detector and sequential structured illumination to reconstruct images, offering remarkable flexibility across spectral bands. A longstanding challenge is that object or platform motion during acquisition is traditionally regarded as a source of blurring and degradation. Here, we present a paradigm in which object motion is reinterpreted as a beneficial source of sub-pixel sampling diversity rather than a detriment. By accurately tracking translational motion-accomplished via geometric moment illumination patterns fused with Hadamard patterns-we encode t

Enhanced Doppler tomography LiDAR imaging using the MACE framework and deep denoisers.

Doppler tomographic LiDAR (DTL) is a groundbreaking technique for long-range imaging of rapidly rotating targets, offering significant advantages in applications such as drone surveillance, orbital object tracking, and space debris characterization. However, its imaging performance and operational range are severely limited by inherent shot noise and non-stationary speckle artifacts. To overcome these challenges, we propose what we believe to be a novel DTL reconstruction framework based on multi-agent consensus equilibrium (MACE), which synergistically integrates a refined physical imaging mo

Representational momentum beyond the target?

Whether the motion of a target could influence the represented location of another stimulus was examined. In Experiment 1, judged location of a stationary object was displaced in the direction of motion of a subsequent moving target. In Experiment 2, forward displacement of the judged locations of two sequentially presented targets moving along the same path was not influenced by whether the targets moved in the same direction or in opposite directions. In Experiment 3, forward displacement of the judged locations of two simultaneously presented targets moving along different paths was larger

Combining visual motion and luminance features to enhance the detection of small moving objects in a bioinspired model.

Flying insects demonstrate exceptional proficiency in detecting and pursuing conspecifics and prey within a cluttered environment, inspiring the development of computational models for small object detection. While existing bioinspired models are dedicated to resolving small moving instead of stationary object detection, few studies have systematically explored the role of visual motion in detection. Here, we developed a fly-inspired model on the basis of the hypothesis that combining visual motion features and luminance features is critical for small moving object detection. We thoroughly inv

Noninvasive heart rate estimation using semantic segmentation and parameter optimization on 4K UAV videos.

We propose a method for noninvasive heart rate (HR) estimation from ultra-high-definition (4K) UAV-recorded videos, leveraging general-purpose instance segmentation without retraining or manual annotation. The method integrates Fast Segment Anything (FastSAM) with silhouette tracking and signal processing techniques. To address segmentation reliability, we introduce a lightweight heuristic metric (Cseg) that detects abrupt changes in the region of interest, enabling the rejection of unreliable frames. Furthermore, a genetic algorithm is further employed to fine-tune preprocessing and estimatio

Neuronal correlates of spatial memory updating: c-Fos and GAD67 expression in the object-place recognition task.

The retrieval of spatial memory is behaviorally often assessed in tasks like the classical Object-Place-Recognition (OPR) task that requires an updating of memory. The neural dynamics across interconnected brain regions underlying retrieval processing in such tasks, are not well understood. Here, we examined in rats the neural correlates of retrieval processing in the OPR task by comparing a condition of successful OPR retrieval, in which the displaced object during the retrieval phase (3-hours after encoding) induced a spatial memory updating (OPR condition), with a stationary (STA) control c

Effects of object motion on visual acuity in honeybees.

Object motion is a fundamental visual cue for many animals, yet its role in modulating visual perception is not fully understood. The majority of previous studies have used stationary stimuli to investigate the visual acuity of insects such as honeybees. Here, we used a behavioural assay to investigate whether object motion influences the known bounds of bees' visual acuity. Using a Y-maze, we conducted binary choice experiments where honeybees (Apis mellifera) were trained to a stimulus and then tested with pairs of stimuli varying in shape (disc versus diamond), size and motion (stationary v

Prism-empowered virtual multiview stereo for three-dimensional vision reconstruction.

Three-dimensional (3D) vision reconstruction has been an essential approach to scene understanding, which can hardly strike a good balance among compact structures, high resolution, and flexible viewpoints. In this paper, we demonstrate a prism-empowered virtual multiview stereo vision architecture that allows 3D reconstruction with a single stationary camera. A variable-boresight perspective projection model is presented to characterize the multiview image acquisition process using the combination of a camera and a rotational wedge prism. A model-driven 3D reconstruction performance analysis

Classification of moving objects through scattering media based on a dynamic vision sensor.

Conventional methods for object classification in speckle imaging through thin scattering media are predominantly designed for stationary objects. However, moving objects introduce motion blur into speckle images, and diminishing classification accuracy. To address this challenge, we propose to take advantage of event data to enhance images captured by a grayscale camera. We introduce the event-fused transformer (EFT), a transformer-based network designed to detect moving objects through scattering media. The EFT employs the vision transformer (ViT) as its backbone and integrates a spike neura

TerraFirma: A Low-Cost and Effective 360 VR Extension for Viewpoint Translation and Collaboration.

This paper presents an approach for extending 360 VR to support viewpoint translation and collaboration, without increasing the acquisition cost. The approach models the ground under the 360° image acquisition viewpoint with a planar patch, on which the user stands and walks. The planar patch is connected to the background with visual continuity. The approach anchors the user's avatar to the ground patch, and supports collaboration, with multiple avatars standing on the patch. The approach only requires defining two trivial parameters: the approximate acquisition height, and the size of the pa

Static CT imaging method based on multi-line array X-ray sources.

Static computed tomography (CT) is an advanced 3D measurement technology. It offers key instrumentation advantages by reducing motion-induced artifacts, preserving measurement accuracy, and lowering radiation doses- critical factors for precision systems. This capability is particularly crucial for imaging moving organs such as the heart. This study introduces a novel Multi-Array Stationary CT (MASCT) imaging architecture. Utilizing cold- cathode carbon nanotube X-ray sources, the proposed architecture achieves dual innovations in temporal and spatial resolution, advancing stationary CT instru

Selective capture and digital counting of intact HIV pseudovirus using designer DNA nets, tethered motion, and photonic resonator interferometric scattering microscopy.

Rapid and quantitatively accurate detection of HIV (human immunodeficiency virus) viral load using a simple workflow, automated instrumentation, and real-time data processing with easily interpretable output is required for an approach to become practical for point-of-care environments. We recently demonstrated a form of interferometric scattering microscopy called Photonic Resonator Interferometric Scattering Microscopy (PRISM) that amplifies the contrast of surface-attached nano-objects via a photonic crystal (PC) surface. Recently, our team also developed net-shaped DNA nanostructures calle

Downchirp Echo From a Stationary Water Surface Wave Field Accompanying Whirligig Beetle (Gyrinidae).

To investigate the hypothesis that the whirligig beetle utilizes a water surface-wave analog of echolocation, we analyzed the stationary capillary-gravity wave field generated during its high-speed swimming (>23 cm/s) at the air-water interface. Our wave dynamics analysis reveals that as the beetle swims past a static object, the object broadcasts a reflected wave. When the object is in the path of beetle's swimming, a single frequency signal is generated. On the other hand, an object off the swimming path reflects a time-dependent frequency that pitches down, creating a distinct downchirp sig

Analyzing rear-end collision risks in foggy weather through a generalized extreme value model.

OBJECTIVES: Fog substantially impairs visibility and driver perception, leading to increased risk of crashes, especially rear-end collisions. Traditional crash-based safety studies are constrained by underreporting, low event frequency, and the inability to assess proactive risk under rare weather conditions. This study introduces a data-driven, proactive framework that integrates naturalistic vehicle trajectory data, anticipated collision time (ACT) as a surrogate safety measure, and extreme value theory (EVT) for estimating fog-related crash risks on multilane Indian highways. METHODS: Vehi

Time delay induced stochastic dynamics in a strongly nonlinear energy harvesting system.

Considering the unavoidable time delay effects and ubiquitous environmental noise in practical applications, along with the strong nonlinearity and multiple couplings inherent in actual systems, the resulting dynamical behavior becomes extremely complex, necessitating the development of new theoretical research methods. In this paper, a strongly nonlinear energy harvesting system with time delay is taken as the research object. To address the above difficulties, an extended stochastic averaging method is proposed to investigate the time delay induced stochastic dynamics of the system. The ener

Bioinspired ultrasound-driven ultrafast soft microgripper.

Understanding how acoustic waves interact with soft matter is critical for developing new strategies for dynamic control, actuation, sensors, and manipulation at small scales. A major challenge in soft matter and microrobotics is how to achieve fast, precise, and remotely controlled actuation at the microscale without sacrificing compliance or biocompatibility. Here, we introduce wireless artificial microcilia based on acoustically activated soft hydrogel microstructures inspired by Venus flytrap and vorticella. The structures, termed SonoGrippers, consist of dual microcilia (≤120 µm length) w

Ultra-quick dynamics and acrobatics of viscous marbles.

Non-wetting viscous drops are unusually quick compared to wetting ones, owing to the conjunction of non-wetting (which minimizes the contact with the substrate) and rotation (which minimizes the dissipation inside the liquid). Here, we report the existence of a threshold in driving force above which the speed of these objects increases about tenfold compared to previous models and experiments. We find that this effect is due to a dynamic reduction of the contact, that minimizes even more the interaction with the substrate but can also render the dynamics non-stationary - a consequence of the g

Rapid responses to reach errors are equally strong during fixation and visual pursuit.

When reaching to a foveated target, peripheral vision of the hand can be used to make rapid, automatic adjustments to the ongoing reach movement, with feedback gain being sensitive to features of the task and environment. These rapid corrective responses are also observed when gaze is directed to a stationary "gaze" target located away from the reach target. In everyday contexts, reaching often occurs concurrently with other visual or visuomotor tasks, such as tracking a moving target. Yet it remains unclear whether engaging in such tasks affects the use of peripheral vision for hand guidance.

Principles of Local and Global Grouping that Underlie Segmentation of Natural Texture Images.

The human visual system segments images using both high-level recognition mechanisms and low-level mechanisms that are largely independent of specific prior experience. The low-level mechanisms are essential for initiating recognition processes, and for learning to recognize new materials, objects, and contexts. Here we describe a hierarchical Bayesian observer (HBO) model of texture segmentation that is biologically plausible, takes into account the statistics of natural scenes, and does not depend on prior experience. The HBO model consists of five steps: local similarity grouping with local
