Structural constraints and psychological need satisfaction among platform-based delivery riders in South Africa.

Platform-based motorbike delivery riders have become an essential part of the urban labour force, especially since the COVID-19 pandemic increased online shopping. This qualitative study used Self-Determination Theory and the Psychology of Working Theory to explore how motorbike delivery work promotes or undermines riders' psychological needs of competence, relatedness and autonomy. Ten motorbike delivery riders in Johannesburg, Gauteng, participated in twenty semi-structured interviews (two per participant). Hybrid thematic analyses were employed to analyse the data. Findings indicated that,

Who is a mobile man 'at risk'? Masculinity, work-related mobility, and HIV-related risks in Uganda and South Africa.

Men who move for work (e.g., taxi drivers, fishermen, labourers) are often described as a homogeneous group at equal risk of HIV acquisition. This framing often masks important differences between men. Using data from rapid ethnographic assessments and a baseline survey in two settings in South Africa and one in Uganda, we examine how sexual risk- taking among men who travel frequently for work is shaped by mobility. We describe the different mobility patterns of men who are engaged in fishing, driving taxis and trucks and motorcycle-taxi riders, showing how these patterns interacted with repu

AI-driven real-time detection of motorcycle traffic violations using YOLOv8 and IoT-based analytics.

Motorcycle-related traffic violations, including helmetless riding and multiple riders, present significant challenges for urban traffic management, especially under conditions of occlusion and high traffic density. This research introduces a hybrid, real-time traffic violation detection framework that improves detection reliability by combining deep learning-based object detection with a secondary verification mechanism. The framework utilizes the lightweight YOLOv8n model to detect motorcycles, riders, and helmets, and incorporates a Haar Cascade-based module to verify rider count and minimi

"A community unlike anything I've ever been a part of": women mountain bikers' experiences of social support.

INTRODUCTION: Mountain biking is a male-dominated action sport with differences in engagement reported between men and women. Motivation to participate in action sports like mountain biking is influenced by social aspects, including social support. The role of social support within action sports has received little attention and is not fully understood. One model that may guide our understanding of social support in this context is the Thriving through Relationships model by Feeney and Collins. In this model, social support allows individuals to take advantage of life opportunities, as well as

Evolutionary branching and consistency in group cooperation.

Understanding the origins of volunteerism and free-riding is crucial in collective action situations where a sufficient number of cooperators is necessary to achieve shared benefits, such as in vaccination campaigns and social change movements. Despite the importance of attaining behavioral consistency for successful collective action, the theoretical mechanisms behind this process remain largely elusive. Here, we address this issue by studying the evolutionary dynamics of individual cooperativity levels in multiround threshold public goods games. By using adaptive dynamics, we explore how ind

The benefits of in situ reporting: Experimental evidence from in-the-moment surveys of public transit riders.

In-the-moment surveys administered when respondents participate in a predetermined event of interest-such as visiting a particular location or completing a specific activity-allow researchers to measure behaviors and experiences as the event occurs, situating data collection within the relevant context and reducing reliance on retrospective self-reports. However, data quality can be compromised if individuals are unwilling to participate or provide low-quality responses. In particular, the timing of survey prompts and the structure of incentives may affect data quality. We evaluated these issu
