Electromyographic activity of equine abdominal muscles during single and double riding in hippotherapy.

BACKGROUND: Hippotherapy is a therapeutic intervention that uses the horse as a biomechanical and sensorimotor agent to promote rehabilitation in individuals with physical and neurological disabilities. Depending on patient needs, riding may be performed with a single rider or with double riding, in which a therapist accompanies the practitioner on the horse. However, the effects of these riding configurations on equine trunk muscle activity remain poorly understood, despite their relevance for both horse welfare and the quality of therapeutic stimuli delivered to the patient. METHODS: Nine c

A blockchain-assisted secure federated learning architecture for intrusion detection in internet of things networks.

The fast growth of Internet of Things (IoT) systems has made them very susceptible to advanced cyber-attacks, and an intelligent and privacy-sustainable intrusion detection system is required. Conventional centralized intrusion detection frameworks have the drawbacks of data privacy threats, scale constraints, and a single point of failure, and conventional federated learning still faces the threat of malicious client membership and a lack of trust during model aggregation. To overcome these obstacles, this paper suggests a federated learning (B-FL) system based on a Blockchain to ensure safe

Oral toxicokinetics of the indoor air pollutant, α-pinene, and its genotoxic metabolite, α-pinene oxide, in rodents and comparison to inhalation route of exposure.

α-Pinene is a monoterpene with potential human exposure via oral and inhalation routes and has been associated with bladder hyperplasia and decrease in sperm counts in rodents following inhalation exposure. The toxicokinetics of α-pinene and α-pinene oxide was investigated following 7-day oral administration of α-pinene in rats (10, 50, and 150 mg/kg) and mice (50 mg/kg). α-Pinene was absorbed following oral administration. In rats, α-pinene systemic exposure (maximum concentration (Cmax) and area the under the concentration versus time curve (AUC)) increased less than dose-proportionally, exc

A cross-sectional study exploring mental health literacy among non-athlete personnel in elite-level road cycling.

BACKGROUND: Elite-level athletes, including professional road cyclists, may be vulnerable to psychiatric disorders, yet help-seeking and care pathways are often impeded by stigma and budgetary constraints. Although sports psychiatry is a growing subdiscipline, mental health initiatives in elite-level road cycling remain limited, possibly leaving coaches and non-athlete personnel ill-equipped to support affected athletes and staff. Consequently, understanding mental health literacy levels among these stakeholders could help identify knowledge gaps and shape future interventions. METHODS: This

Understanding the key correlates of post-crash clinical indicators and outcomes in road traffic crashes.

This study investigates the association of pre-crash factors (i.e., driver/rider behaviors and roadway conditions), and emergency response attributes (pre-hospital time (PHT) and mode of evacuation) with clinical outcomes directly and through the three post-crash clinical indicators, harnessing an extensive hospital-based dataset (N = 273,362) collected in Karachi (Pakistan). The three jointly estimated ordered probit models for post-crash clinical indicators including Glasgow Coma Scale (GCS), Systolic Blood Pressure (SBP), and Respiratory Rate (RR) outperformed their independent counterparts

Systematic Evaluation of Data and Trial Fitness for Oncology Trial Emulation: Empirical Findings from the CARE Initiative.

The Coalition to Advance Real-World Evidence through Randomized Controlled Trial Emulation (CARE) Initiative seeks to advance understanding of when real-world data (RWD) can generate valid treatment effectiveness estimates by emulating completed oncology randomized controlled trials (RCTs). A prerequisite for meaningful RCT emulation insights is the identification and use of RWD with sufficient fitness to satisfy RCT-specific data elements. We conducted a systematic, multi-stage feasibility assessment of six commercially available US electronic health record-based RWD sources across 23 candida

Psycho-Spiritual Reflections on the Horse/Human Relationship.

This essay offers a psycho-spiritual and psychoanalytic meditation on the horse-human relationship as a nonverbal site of attunement, regulation, and meaning-making. Drawing on autobiographical clinical narrative, it explores how horseback riding became a medium for experiencing and reflecting upon embodied connection, mutual responsiveness, and contemplative presence. Encounters with horses illuminate forms of reciprocity that preceded and exceed speech, while also opening reflection on maternal attachment, separation, loss, and the emergence of selfhood. In dialogue with Freud, Winnicott, Pi

A hybrid heuristic-based multi-objective strategy for optimized charging and discharging in plug-in EV energy management.

The paper will deal with the problem of optimal charging and discharging coordination of Plug-in Electric Vehicles in a local multi-energy system that will be conducted under uncertain conditions. The current practices are usually based on simplified assumptions and fail to coordinate various energy sources and resources effectively, which restricts their usage in real-life conditions. In order to eliminate these constraints, a hybrid optimization model that involves Rider Optimization and Osprey Optimization integration is suggested. The model developed will take into account both the economi

To clean or not to clean: the free-rider problem in sequentially shared resources.

Shared resources enhance productivity, yet at the same time open pathways for biological and digital contamination, turning physical or digital hygiene into a cooperation dilemma prone to free-riding. Here, we introduce a game of sequential sharing of common resources, an empirically parameterized evolutionary model of population dynamics in sequential-use settings such as gyms or shared workspaces. The success of the strategies implemented in the model, which involve equipment cleaning before or after use, is based on the trade-offs between cleaning costs, contamination risks and social incen

Conflict Behaviour Frequency During Show Jumping Competitions: A Practical Study.

With society's ever-growing concern for animal welfare, the equestrian industry has focused on passing and enforcing new rules to protect the main athlete, the horse. In jumping, courses go by quickly, with judges using the occurrence of conflict behaviours to assess any welfare breach. This study aimed to evaluate the overall frequency of such behaviours in Brazilian Sport Horses during elite show jumping competitions in Brazil. Conflict behaviour displays were analyzed in 120 different horse-rider pairs in jumping competitions in Brazil. All videos were observed at a slowed-down speed, with

Characterization of Motorcyclist Aggressive Driving Behavior in Urban and Suburban Environments: A Case Study of a Single Motorcyclist.

Aggressive riding behavior is a key contributing factor to road accidents, particularly in motorcycling, where rider dynamics directly influence vehicle stability and control. Despite growing interest in objective behavioral assessment, validated classification frameworks specific to motorcycles remain scarce in the literature. This pilot study investigated the feasibility of a standard deviation-based method for classifying aggressive riding behavior in a single experienced motorcyclist navigating two distinct environments: an urban route (UR) and a suburban national route (SNR). The particip

Impact of different vehicle distances on PM2.5 concentration and population exposure from two electric two-wheelers traveling side-by-side.

As a commuting tool, electric two-wheelers are convenient, fast, and environmentally friendly. Electric two-wheelers accounted for more than 75% of all electric vehicles. However, riding electric two-wheelers may generate resuspension dust pollution, which may pose a risk of dust exposure due to directly exposed to the air environment for riders. So it is necessary to study the road dust generated during the electric two-wheelers traveling, and impact of different vehicle distances on PM2.5 concentration and population. Computational fluid dynamics method and sliding mesh technique were used t

Three modes, three profiles: Characterizing fatal crashes on e-scooters, e-bikes, and conventional bicycles in Sweden.

INTRODUCTION: The electrification of personal transport has transformed urban mobility, but the rapid adoption of e-bikes and e-scooters has introduced distinct fatal crash risks. Existing research on micromobility safety is often limited to non-fatal injuries and relies on standard crash databases that often lack the granular detail needed, for instance, to distinguish between vehicle types, ownership (private vs. rental), or to quantify the severity of alcohol intoxication. METHOD: We conducted a retrospective analysis of all fatal crashes involving conventional bicyclists (n = 152), e-cycl

Personality traits, sensation seeking, and cycling safety outcomes: A multi-country study.

INTRODUCTION: While the role of personality in shaping behavior and safety has been widely documented across domains, its study among cyclists has remained limited. Traditional trait-based approaches may also fall short in predicting real behaviors, which highlights the need to explore additional factors. AIMS: This research examined associations between personality traits, cycling behaviors, and self-reported crashes, and tested the predictive role of sensation seeking (SS), an emerging construct in cycling safety, on risky and protective behaviors. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was cond
