The effect of major railway accidents on the psychological health of train drivers--II. A longitudinal study of the one-year outcome after the accident.

The psychological impact on 101 train drivers of accidents causing major injuries or death to persons was studied by means of clinical interviews and questionnaires (Impact of Event Scale, General Health Questionnaire and a questionnaire addressing stress symptoms plus past and pre accident expectancies of being involved in accidents). The drivers were examined within hours to a few days after the accident and later at 1 month and 1 year. One month after the accident the symptoms of distress were significantly reduced and most so among the drivers with no preaccident risk experience according

Railway suicide: the psychological effects on drivers.

People have jumped (or fallen) in front of trains on the London Underground system in increasing numbers throughout the twentieth century. During the past decade there have been about 100 such incidents each year, of which around 90 would involve the train driver witnessing his train strike the person on the track. Most are suicides or attempts at suicide. They represent major unexpected and violent events in the lives of the train drivers and it might be expected that some of them would respond by developing a post-traumatic stress reaction of the type identified by Horowitz (1976) or other a

Hearing loss from gun and railroad noise--relations with ISO standard 1999.

Pure-tone hearing thresholds and anamnestic data pertaining to nosocusis and exposure to gun noise were analyzed for 9778 male railroad train-crew workers. A major portion of losses in hearing sensitivity due to railroad noise are obscured in comparisons of hearing levels of trainmen with the hearing levels of the unscreened samples of United States males given in Annex B, ISO 1999 [ISO 1999 (1990), "Acoustics--Determination of occupational noise exposure and estimation of noise-induced hearing impairment" (International Organization for Standardization, Geneva)]. Safety at work for railway staff in Britain.

The recent series of railway accidents raised questions about the safety of British Railways. We have studied trends in accidents to railway staff over a 33-year period, 1954-86, which time has covered the pre- and post-modernization of the railways, in conjunction with large reductions in both staffing and traffic volume. The Railway Inspectorate, which has the duty of investigating and reporting on accidents occurring on railway premises, defines three kinds of accident: train, movement and non-movement. The numbers of railway staff killed and injured in each kind of accident have been studi

Occupational performance of a paced secondary task under conditions of sensory deprivation. I. Heart rate changes in train drivers as a result of monotony.

Twelve experienced train drivers were asked to operate the train function safety circuit (SIFA)--a paced secondary motor task which is expected to guarantee the driver's fitness for service on engines of the German Federal Railway--under laboratory conditions of extreme monotony. In spite of massive decreases in vigilance as shown by theta-activity in the EEG, all subjects were able to operate the device without major errors. A prerequisite for adequate performance is an EEG-defined arousal reaction, which is synchronized with the SIFA cycles. For 7 subjects the time-related cross-correlation

Occupational performance of a paced secondary task under conditions of sensory deprivation. II. The influence of professional training.

Twelve truck drivers operated the train function safety circuit (SIFA), a paced secondary task used as a job monitor on German railways engines, under laboratory conditions of extreme monotony, in a comparison with 12 train drivers who were well acquainted with SIFA. Alertness was determined by means of EEG evaluations. Heart rate was monitored as the parameter for physical load, and the precoded SIFA tasks as the active response parameter. In spite of significantly more frequent and more distinct decreases in alterness, the SIFA-trained subjects (TS) performed better. Nine out of 12 TS reache

[Status of the visual system in operators causing railway accidents].

One hundred and eighty four engine-drivers aged 21-60 years were examined; 91 from them provoked an accident not stopping the train in front of the "Stop" signal; 93 constituted a control group. Compared was the status of the visual system and the efficiency of the visual functions such as: binocular vision, color vision and asthenopia, mesopic vision and the sensitivity to glare. In engine-drivers of the "accident-prone" group one observed an increased sensitivity for glare. The authors suggest it would be necessary to introduce to the qualification examinations for engine-drivers the evaluat

[An intervention policy for reducing noise pollution in urban areas].

The methodological methods for a reduction of the noise pollution in the urban areas, mainly, can be advised in 8 operative points: 1) reduction of the source's noise; 2) control of the traffic; 3) planning of the urban and regional development; 4) building's shelter against the noise; 5) compensation's and incentivation's interventions for the exposed people; 6) controls activity and restaining of the noise's sources; 7) scientific research; 8) health education. For executive motivations we must, necessarily, divide the intervention turned to a reduction of the noise's emissions caused by fix

Compensated back injury in New Zealand.

Back injury is one of the commonest claims for accident compensation. A survey carried out over three months in 1984 identified 420 claimants having details of their accidents. Labourers, freezing workers, coal miners and railway workers were at high risk. Over half (54.7%) developed back pain whilst lifting and for almost two-thirds (63.6%) there was a sudden strain. Half had a previous history of back pain and the incidence rose to 70% for those aged 40-59 years. Eighty-two percent returned to work within four weeks. Most were treated by a general practitioner and physiotherapy was increasin

Preliminary results of an epidemiological study of back pain in a Prague population.

The authors present the preliminary results of an ongoing epidemiological study designed to determine the prevalence of back pain at selected worksites of Czechoslovak State Railways and Avia Letnany, an industrial plant. Examination of a total of 1,555 subjects was conducted by a field team of health-care workers of the Research Institute of Rheumatic Diseases based in Prague. The examination included a detailed medical history, physical examination and, in some probands, the results of HLA B 27 antigen determination, and x-ray examination. Overall, the prevalence of back pain in the cohort w

Studies on motion sickness caused by high curve speed railway vehicles. Evaluation of the swing and its effects on passengers and conductors.

The high curve speed railway vehicles (HCSRVs) of the Japanese National Railway have been operating since 1973 with the aim of increasing speed on ordinary routes with many curve track sections. Although the aim of increased speed has been attained, it has been pointed out that the swing of HCSRVs is stronger than that of ordinary-type trains and it may increase motion sickness among the passengers and conductors. In this study, the authors examined motion sickness symptoms among 119 passengers and 100 conductors of both trains with a self-administered questionnaire, and evaluated the vibratio

Respiratory abnormalities among workers in an iron and steel foundry.

A study of the health of 78 workers in an iron and steel foundry in Vancouver, British Columbia, was carried out and the results compared with those found in 372 railway repair yard workers who were not significantly exposed to air contaminants at work. The foundry workers were exposed to PepSet, which consists of diphenyl methane diisocyanate (MDI) and phenol formaldehyde and their decomposition products as well as to silica containing particulates. A questionnaire was administered by trained interviewers, and chest radiography, allergy skin tests, pulmonary function tests, and methacholine i

Fatal and nonfatal accidents on the railways--a study of injuries to individuals, with particular reference to children and to nonfatal trauma.

This paper reports a five-year total population study of fatal railroad accidents involving individuals (that is, not including train crashes or derailments); and a consecutive unselected series of nonfatal isolated injuries in Queensland, Australia. There were 84 fatalities and 211 cases of significant nonfatal traumata. Fatal railway accidents involving children under 15 years of age are now more common in Australia than childhood poisonings and electrocutions. Two syndromes occur--(a) toddlers living near the tracks who simply wander onto the line; and (b) young teenage boys who are run dow

Minimum visual requirements in different occupations in Finland.

In Finland the employers can individually fix the minimum visual requirements for their personnel in almost every occupation. In transportation, in police and national defence proper eyesight is regarded so important that strict visual requirements for these have been fixed by the Government. The regulations are often more close when accepting the person to the occupation than later on when working. The minimum requirements are mostly stated for visual acuity, colour perception and visual fields. In some occupations the regulations concern also the refractive error of the eyes and possible eye

Effects of consecutive night-shift work on health conditions among car-cleaners of super-express trains.

The Shinkansen Super-Express trains of the Japanese National Railways, the so-called bullet trains, run from early morning until late at night. Accordingly the car-cleaners of the Shinkansen must do late night shift work. A self-administered questionnaire survey including items about health and work conditions was given to 246 workers at Osaka Station, who were then divided into 3 groups: Group A consisted of 102 night workers working 5 successive days with 2 days off, Group B consisted of 124 alternate-day 24-hour workers working 3 days a week, while Group C included 20 day-workers working 6

[Occupational medicine studies of train conductors and switchmen of the Federal Swiss Railway].

Railway controllers and points men of the Swiss Railways retire more often prematurely because of medical reasons than civil servants. A pilot study on 120 controllers and 60 points men revealed adverse effects of the irregular working hours as well as of mental loads. Furthermore, the controllers disclose symptoms and signs caused by physical and environmental loads.
