Factors affecting the exposure of passengers, service staff and train drivers inside trains to airborne particles.

This study investigated train air conditioning filters, interior ventilation systems, tunnel environments and platform air quality as factors affecting the concentrations of airborne particles inside trains and provides information on the exposure of passengers, train drivers and service staff to particles. Particle sampling was done inside the passenger cabin, the driver cabin and the service staff cabin during on-board measurement campaigns in 2016 and 2017. The results show that interior ventilation plays a key role in maintaining cleaner in-train air. Noticeable increases in PM10 and PM2.5

A Preliminary Review of Fatigue Among Rail Staff.

Background: Fatigue is a severe problem in the rail industry, which may jeopardize train crew's health and safety. Nonetheless, a preliminary review of all empirical evidence for train crew fatigue is still lacking. The aim of the present paper is, therefore, to provide a preliminary description of occupational fatigue in the rail industry. This paper reviews the literature with the research question examining the risk factors associated with train crew fatigue, covering both papers published in refereed journals and reports from trade organizations and regulators. It assesses the progress of

Risk factors for inflammatory bowel disease: A prospective multi-center study.

INTRODUCTION: Environmental risk factors have been associated with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). With rising incidence, it is important to know risk factors associated with IBD in our population. This study was aimed to evaluate risk factors for IBD from western India. METHODS: This was prospective, multi-center case-control study which included 1054 patients with IBD of which 765 (72.5%) were ulcerative colitis (UC) and 289 (27.4%) Crohn's disease (CD). Asymptomatic individuals without a history of any major illness served as controls. The questionnaire containing risk factors for IBD wa

The effect of aircraft, road, and railway traffic noise on stroke - results of a case-control study based on secondary data.

AIM: To examine the stroke risks associated with aircraft, road traffic, and railway noise exposure in a large case-control study. MATERIALS AND METHODS: All people aged ≥40 years living around the Frankfurt airport that were insured by one of three large statutory health insurance funds between 2005 and 2010 were included in the study (n = 1,026,670). Address-specific exposure to aircraft, road, and railway traffic noise was estimated for 2005. We used insurance claim data to identify 25,495 newly diagnosed cases of stroke between 2006 and 2010 and compared them with 827,601 control particip

Tunnel driving occupational environment and hearing loss in train drivers in China.

OBJECTIVE: Hearing loss caused by high levels of noise is a potential occupational health disorder among train drivers around the world. This study aims to investigate the relationship between tunnel driving occupational environment and hearing loss in train drivers, to provide some insights into helping reduce hearing loss among train drivers. METHODS: This study analysed cross-sectional data for 1214 train drivers who work at China Railway Guangzhou Group. Health examination was taken by physicians with professional licences, and audiometric testing was performed by health technicians in a

[Myocardial Infarction and Stroke Among Railway Employees in Azerbaijan].

We studied the incidence of myocardial infarction (MI) and stroke in two groups of railway employees aged over 39 years including pensioners. The first (main) group included employees (n=15 671) responsible for movement of trains and exposed to `action of harmful occupational factors. The second (control) group included persons (n=19 132) who were not exposed to harmful occupational factors. Both main and control groups were divided into subgroups according to age. Prospective follow-up of persons with postinfarction atherosclerosis and consequences of stroke was also conducted during 5 years.

Residential traffic noise exposure and vestibular schwannoma - a Danish case-control study.

BACKGROUND: Few risk factors for sporadic vestibular schwannoma (VS) are known. Several studies have proposed an increased risk with occupational noise exposure, whereas no studies have investigated residential traffic noise exposure as a risk factor. The present study investigated if residential traffic noise was associated with vestibular schwannoma in a large, population-based Danish case-control study. MATERIAL AND METHODS: We identified 1454 VS cases, age above 30 years at diagnosis, between 1990 and 2007. For each case, we selected two random population controls, matched on sex and year

Comparison of Annoyance from Railway Noise and Railway Vibration.

The aim of this study is to compare vibration exposure to noise exposure from railway traffic in terms of equal annoyance, i.e., to determine when a certain noise level is equally annoying as a corresponding vibration velocity. Based on questionnaire data from the Train Vibration and Noise Effects (TVANE) research project from residential areas exposed to railway noise and vibration, the dose response relationship for annoyance was estimated. By comparing the relationships between exposure and annoyance for areas both with and without significant vibration exposure, the noise levels and vibrat

Railway safety climate: a study on organizational development.

The safety climate of an organization is considered a leading indicator of potential risk for railway organizations. This study adopts the perceptual measurement-individual attribute approach to investigate the safety climate of a railway organization. The railway safety climate attributes are evaluated from the perspective of railway system staff. We identify four safety climate dimensions from exploratory factor analysis, namely safety communication, safety training, safety management and subjectively evaluated safety performance. Analytical results indicate that the safety climate differs a

Effect of wearing hearing protectors on the audibility of railway warning signals - an experimental study.

The effect of wearing hearing protectors on the audibility of warning signals has been evaluated for three specific railway-related jobs: track workers, train drivers and platform agents. Masked thresholds were measured in the laboratory, on railway agents with normal hearing, using warning signals and background noises typical of each job. Out of the 36 situations tested in total, statistical analyses showed that wearing earplugs improves the perception in 11 situations, deteriorates the perception in 10 situations and has no significant effect in 15 situations (as compared to no hearing prot

Vibration from freight trains fragments sleep: A polysomnographic study.

As the number of freight trains on railway networks increases, so does the potential for vibration exposure in dwellings nearby to freight railway lines. Nocturnal trains in particular are of particular importance since night-time exposure may interfere with sleep. The present work investigates the impact of vibration and noise from night-time freight trains on human sleep. In an experimental polysomnographic laboratory study, 24 young healthy volunteers with normal hearing were exposed to simulated freight pass-bys with vibration amplitudes of 0.7 and 1.4 mm/s either 20 or 36 times during the

BACKGROUND: Little has been investigated regarding the role of shift schedule on fatigue and workload among Iranian train drivers. OBJECTIVE: This study sought to compare train drivers' fatigue and workload between a long-haul and a short-haul train trips. METHODS: One-hundred train drivers, in two routes of Tehran-Mashhad (long-haul) and Tehran-Semnan (short-haul), were asked to complete the Samn-Perelli Fatigue Scale prior to departure, immediately after ending driving duty on the way going, and immediately after ending driving on the way back. Moreover, they were asked to complete NASA-TL

The article presents results of study concerning influence of relaxation sessions on emotional and psychophysical state of locomotive crew workers in special cabin for psychoemotional relief "Vivid silence" simulating rest in nature. Relaxation sessions appeared to cause better mood, lower blood pressure, increased reactions speed, reduced number of errors. Purposeful training of the specialists in self-regulation is extremely important for preparation to work activity and for prophylactic and social measures aimed to preserve and improve health in locomotive crew workers.
