Relatively little is known about occupational and other risk factors for renal-cell carcinoma (RCC). Associations between RCC and occupations, exposures and other factors were investigated in a hospital-based case-control study in Bologna (central-northern Italy). Between 1986 and 1994, 324 histologically confirmed RCC cases were diagnosed at Policlinico S. Orsola-Malpighi in patients from the Province of Bologna. Studies of Swedish railway employees have indicated that railroad engine drivers have an increased cancer morbidity and incidence of chronic lymphatic leukemia. The studies were carried out in the years 1995-97. From the group of 1000 diabetic patients (railway workers) of the Lublin Railway Health Service, 160 persons were chosen at random. They were interviewed in order to recognise their knowledge of the disease they suffered from and which could contribute to the prevention of diabetes in this occupational group. The studies revealed that the desired knowledge was lacking among the diabetic railway workers who did not show any interest in increasing their awareness in this regard.

UNLABELLED: A collective of 131 suicides of physicians (n = 40), female and male nurses (n = 38), pharmacists/chemist/biologists (n = 17) and medical/chemical assistant personnel (n = 36) was evaluated with regard to the method of suicide. Train accidents and near accidents occurring over a 3-year period were examined within an Australian public rail authority. Retrospective analysis of 112 incidents according to Reason's (1992) Generic Error Modelling System (Reason, 1992, Human Error. A retrospective computer search of the records of the Jefferson County Coroner/Medical Examiner Office covering the 15-year period from 1981 to 1995 revealed 86 cases in which either a train caused death or in which a body was found dead by the tracks. The average age of the decedents was 39 years (range, 3 weeks-87 years). Men accounted for 88% of the deaths. The manners of death were as follows: three natural, 64 accident, seven suicide, six homicide, and six undetermined. Six decedents were found dead by the tracks, but death was not caused by a train. To assess the degree of noise pollution in relation to the health and safety of the employees and commuters, a study on the levels of noise originating from various locomotives and also from different other sources was undertaken at Kalupur railway station of Gujarat State in India. The paper is concerned with an organizational, structural and functional model of the diagnostic center (DC) in the train, developed by the authors. Around 90 London Underground train drivers experience a person jumping or falling in front of their train each year. The majority of these incidents are suicides or attempted suicides. 76 drivers were interviewed in order to assess the range of responses to these incidents. In Denmark there are approx. 50 railway suicides and suicide attempts each year. Most of these take place on urban railways such as the S-train in Copenhagen. There is a 1 in 8 chance that any one driver will be involved in such an incident each year. Since 1986 the Danske Statsbaner has implemented a policy aimed at minimising the negative psychological effects of railway suicides on train drivers. This case history describes how these procedures are put into effect.

Dermatoses are among the most prevalent occupational diseases on the railway transport; in 1961-1975 their share in total morbidity was 40%. The structure of diseases was as follows (%): contact dermatosis 87.4, eczema 6.8, allergic drug-induced dermatitis 1.4, folliculitis, toxicoderma, chemical burns, radial dermatitis and other kinds of dermatosis 0.84. The main causes of diseases were the use of many chemicals in transport processes and of Diesel engines on trains.
