BACKGROUND: Sleep-disordered breathing (SDB) and especially obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) are associated with daytime sleepiness and an increased risk for motor vehicle crashes. We investigated job stress among 442 employees from 19 divisions in a Japanese company using the Brief Job Stress Questionnaire. The conditions of male teenagers' work and training as engine-driver mate apprentices at a railway college were subject to physiological and hygienic assessments. The influence of a complex of occupational and training factors on teenagers' health was studied. The hygienic approach to applying special physical exercises and improving their professional characteristics on attaining skills is justified.

The Edge Hill railway accident occurred on Sunday 9 May 1999 in Liverpool, England. An Engineers' scrap train struck a plant quality supervisor. This paper presents the results of a systemic analysis of the accident. We present a population genetic study of Aedes aegypti in Brazil using isoenzyme markers. Four polymorphic loci were used to examine 11 mosquito collections at four periods in 2003. Samples from a dengue-endemic area (southeastern region) and a dengue-free area (southern region) connected by an important network of roads and railways were analyzed. The degree of genetic differentiation observed between populations is consistent with limited gene flow between them. There was no evidence of passive dispersion of Ae. aegypti by vehicles among the different routes linking metropolitan areas.

A demonstration field-research study reveals that aircraft noise measured at two one-story houses is approximately 9 dB less attenuated from measured outdoor levels than is street traffic noise, and, found in other studies, approximately 14 dB less than railway noise. Comparable differences are found between these noises from the application of basic acoustical formulas for quantifying attenuations that occur on site of one- and two-story houses. BACKGROUND: Non-melanoma skin cancer (NMSC) is the most frequent tumour among Caucasian populations worldwide.
