Recurrent respiratory tract infections (RRTIs) in children constitute a serious problem worldwide. Some children experience considerable morbidity as a result of RRTIs and receive repeated courses of antibacterials that are not effective against viral infectious agents and can increase bacterial resistance. Furthermore, the direct and indirect costs of RRTIs to the community are substantial. An investigation of occupational exposure to diesel exhaust, in terms of elemental carbon, was conducted as part of a feasibility study in the Canadian railroad industry. Malleable attentional resources theory posits that attentional capacity can change size in response to changes in task demands. Relatively little is known about occupational and other risk factors for renal-cell carcinoma (RCC). Associations between RCC and occupations, exposures and other factors were investigated in a hospital-based case-control study in Bologna (central-northern Italy). A formative evaluation for a communication campaign to decrease rail-automobile accidents was conducted with a survey of 891 randomly selected residents in Michigan, USA. The formative evaluation was theoretically grounded in the extended parallel process model. INTRODUCTION: Clinical observations and laboratory data indicate that patients with myeloproliferative syndrome (MPS) have hemostasis disorders that manifest with haemorrhagic diathesis or thrombotic disease. The role of fibrinolytic system is not clear in the pathomechanism of the disorders. In the study we aimed to evaluate fibrinolysis system in blood plasma of the patients with selected myeloproliferative syndromes on the basis of examinations of plasminogen activators (tissue--t-PA and urokinase-type--u-PA) and type 1 and type 2 plasminogen activator inhibitors (PAI-1 and PAI-2).

BACKGROUND: Findings from experimental studies on rodents and from epidemiological studies suggest that diesel exhaust may cause lung cancer. The studies were carried out in the years 1995-97. From the group of 1000 diabetic patients (railway workers) of the Lublin Railway Health Service, 160 persons were chosen at random. They were interviewed in order to recognise their knowledge of the disease they suffered from and which could contribute to the prevention of diabetes in this occupational group. The studies revealed that the desired knowledge was lacking among the diabetic railway workers who did not show any interest in increasing their awareness in this regard.
