Metal content of settled railway dust: factors affecting iron (Fe) content of dust in railway stations in England and implications for human health exposure assessments.

Railway infrastructure generates metal-containing particles enriched in elements with known health impacts, which are released into the environment and may expose railway users and workers. This study aimed to characterise the metal composition of settled dust in railway stations, estimate deposition rates, and identify station characteristics associated with elevated exposure. Settled dust samples were collected using dust wipes from undisturbed surfaces in nine English railway stations, which enabled opportunistic metals analysis. Metal concentrations were quantified using Inductively Couple

Role of Cellular-Ferroptosis-Mediated HMGB1 Nuclear Translocation in Indium-Tin-Oxide-Nanoparticle-Induced Inflammatory Lung Injury.

Indium tin oxide (ITO) particles, widely utilized in electronics and energy technologies, pose significant pulmonary risks due to occupational exposure during manufacturing. While emerging evidence links ITO to severe lung pathologies, critical gaps persist in understanding size-dependent effects and molecular mechanisms. This study systematically investigates the size-dependent effects of nanoscale ITO (N-ITO) and submicron-scale ITO (U-ITO) on pulmonary toxicity, focusing on ferroptosis as a key mechanism. In vivo, repeated oropharyngeal exposure of mice to ITO (3.6 and 36 mg/kg) induced dos

Microplastics in Settled Dust from Indian Long-Distance Railway Coaches: Baseline Occurrence, Relative Load, and Scenario-Based Ingestion Estimates.

Microplastics (MPs) in long-distance trains remain undercharacterized despite prolonged exposure of passengers and staff in confined environments. In this study, settled dust was collected from four distinct coach classes on an Indian railway to establish baseline MPs occurrence, morphology, polymer composition, relative load, and exposure-relevant particle intake. Samples were processed via oxidative digestion, density separation, and stereomicroscopy for particle quantification and morphological characterization. Polymer identity was assessed using micro-Raman spectroscopy, and human exposur

Characteristics of patients hospitalized for diabetic foot in a national hospital in Peru, 2024.

INTRODUCTION: Expansive processes around the third ventricle have always been a major neurosurgical challenge. Despite all the technological and scientific progress recorded over the last few years, third ventricle tumors are still a very difficult pathology to approach due to their formidable complexity.Treating such a tumor demands a good knowledge of local anatomy, pathophysiology, pathology and a good capacity to integrate all the data gathered from the patient prior to and during surgery. Last but not least, the correct means to approach such a tumor involves using modern neuronavigation

Sweat Na+/K+ ratio as a practical biological index for estimating sweating rate and salt loss rate.

Objectives A simple method to evaluate clinically the sweating rate and the salt loss rate via sweating would enable the early detection of heat-related illness in workers. We measured K+ concentration in sweat and calculated the Na+/K+ ratio to evaluate its utility for estimating sweating rate and salt loss rate. We hypothesized that compared with single electrolyte concentrations, the Na+/K+ ratio would be less affected by the rapid evaporation of sweat. Methods Thirteen healthy males exercised on a bicycle ergometer in an artificial climate room, and their sweating rates and Na+ and K+ conc

High Voltage and Train-Surfing Injuries: A 30-Year Retrospective Analysis of High-Voltage Trauma and Its Impact on Cardiac Biomarkers.

Background: High-voltage electrical injuries (HVEIs) represent a complex and life-threatening entity, frequently involving multi-organ damage. While traditionally linked to occupational hazards, train surfing-riding on moving trains-and train climbing-scaling stationary carriages-have emerged as increasingly common causes among adolescents. Popularized via social media, these behaviors expose individuals to the invisible danger of electric arcs from 15,000-volt railway lines, often resulting in extensive burns, cardiac complications, and severe trauma. This study presents a 30-year retrospecti

3D modelling and simulation of thermal effects and dispersion of particles carrying infectious respiratory agents in a railway transport coach.

Even though the COVID-19 pandemic now belongs to the long history of infectious diseases that have struck humanity, pathogenic biological agents continue to pose a recurring threat in private places, but also and mainly in places where the public congregates. In our recent research published in this journal in 2022 and 2023, we considered the illustrative example of a commuter train coach in which a symptomatic or asymptomatic passenger, assumed to be infected with a respiratory disease, sits among other travellers. The passenger emits liquid particles containing, for example, COVID-19 virions

Effect of Freeze-Thaw Cycles on the Shear Strength of Root-Soil Composite.

A large alpine meadow in a seasonal permafrost zone exists in the west of Sichuan, which belongs to a part of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, China. Due to the extreme climates and repeated freeze-thaw cycling, resulting in a diminishment in soil shear strength, disasters occur frequently. Plant roots increase the complexity of the soil freeze-thaw strength problem. This study applied the freeze-thaw cycle and direct shear tests to investigate the change in the shear strength of root-soil composite under freeze-thaw cycles. This study examined how freeze-thaw cycles and initial moisture content aff
