Pediatric road traffic injuries in Qatar: Evidence for a developmental stage approach to road safety.

Road traffic injuries are the leading cause of death in Qatar but their epidemiology in children has not been fully described. This paper will describe the epidemiology of pediatric road traffic injuries (pRTIs) in Qatar, in order to understand the relationships among risk factors, mechanisms of injury, use of safety equipment, and according to child developmental stages. The primary sample for this study was drawn from all pRTIs (0-18 years) from January 2010 to December 2012-motor vehicle occupants, passengers and drivers, pedestrians, cyclists, motorcyclists, and all-terrain vehicle (ATV) d

Recreational off-highway vehicle crashes resulting in victims being treated at a regional trauma center: mechanisms and contributing factors.

BACKGROUND: Recreational off-highway vehicles (ROVs) have become increasingly popular in recent years; however, crash epidemiology is not well described. ROVs travel at least 30 mph, and unlike all-terrain vehicles, have a rollover protective structure (ROPS) and seat belts or a harness system for occupants. This study's objective was to evaluate the demographics, mechanisms, injuries, and associated risk factors of ROV crashes. METHODS: A retrospective chart review was performed for patients of all ages with ROV-related injuries presenting to a Level 1 trauma center from 2004 to 2017. Cases

Aeromedical Evacuations Within the French Armed Forces: Analysis of 2,129 Patients.

INTRODUCTION: The doctrine of medical support during French military operations is based on a triptych: forward medical stabilization, forward damage control surgery, and early strategic aeromedical evacuation (Strategic-AE). The aim of this study was to describe the last piece, the evacuation process of the French Strategic-AE. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective cohort analysis using patient records from 2015 to 2017. All French service members requiring an air evacuation from a foreign country to a homeland medical facility were included. Data collected included age, medical diagnosis, p

Severity of passenger injuries on public buses: A comparative analysis of collision injuries and non-collision injuries.

INTRODUCTION: Although public buses have been demonstrated as a relatively safe mode of transport, the number of injuries to public bus passengers is far from negligible. Existing studies of public bus safety have focused primarily on injuries caused by collisions. Surprisingly, limited effort has been devoted to identifying factors that increase the severity of passenger injuries in non-collision incidents. METHOD: Our study therefore investigated the injury risk of public bus passengers involved in collision incidents and non-collision incidents comparatively, based on a police-reported dat

Safety of motorized two-wheeler riders in the formal and informal transport sector.

Road fatalities are largely preventable problem with large socioeconomic impact. Due to the rapidly increasing population, transport systems and road infrastructure have not met the demand. The use of motorized two-wheeler vehicles has increased, as informal transport. However, evidence on their safety is scarce. The aim of this article is to examine the safety and social equity issues in MTW in the informal transport sector. Factors can be used to explain traffic collisions in MTW in the formal/informal transport sectors: design, rider behavior, road design, enforcement, and regulation of the

Nonfatal All-Terrain Vehicle-Related Head and Neck Injuries to Children Treated in US Emergency Departments.

This study investigates children <18 years old with nonfatal all-terrain vehicle (ATV)-related head and neck injuries treated in United States emergency departments by analyzing data from the National Electronic Injury Surveillance System from 1990 to 2014. An estimated 279 391 children received emergency treatment during the 25-year study period. The number of injuries remained relatively constant from 1990 to 1997, increased by 142.9% from 1997 to 2007, and then decreased by 37.4% from 2007 to 2014. The most common diagnoses were concussion/closed head injury (32.6%) and fracture (32.6%); 15

Prioritization of practical solutions for the vibrational health risk reduction of mining trucks using fuzzy decision making.

The goal of this article was to prioritize the practical solutions for vibrational health risk reduction of truck drivers during mining operation using the multicriteria decision-making (MCDM) techniques. Mining trucks require special consideration because of their specific suspension system, large size, payload capacity, and off-road conditions of mining. In most cases, it is not easy for decision makers to compute verbal and linguistic variables, whose values are expressed in linguistic terms. These uncertainties and ambiguities are well interpreted by using fuzzy set theory. In this study,

Examination of the severity of two-lane highway traffic barrier crashes using the mixed logit model.

INTRODUCTION: Vehicles in transport sometimes leave the travel lane and encroach onto natural or artificial objects on the roadsides. These types of crashes are called run-off the road crashes, which account for a large proportion of fatalities and severe crashes to vehicle occupants. In the United States, there are about one million such crashes, with roadside features leading to one third of all road fatalities. Traffic barriers could be installed to keep vehicles on the roadways and to prevent vehicles from colliding with obstacles such as trees, boulder, and walls. The installation of traf

INTRODUCTION: Noise-induced hearing loss is one of the most common health problems among military service personnel. Exposure to noise in military vehicles constitutes a large proportion of total noise exposure. This pilot study aimed to evaluate in-vehicle noise levels depending on the type of vehicle, riding compartment and road surface. METHOD: Noise levels were measured in armoured personnel carriers and heavy all-terrain trucks, in the cab and rear passenger compartment, while driving on paved or off-road surfaces. The results were compared with national LLV and allowed noise exposure ti

Analysis of factors affecting injury severity for riders or occupants of all-terrain vehicles and golf carts involved in police-reported crashes.

In recent years, the popularity of all-terrain vehicles (ATVs) in the United States (US) has increased, and the number of ATV driver and passenger deaths have also increased substantially in the last few decades. Riders or occupants of ATVs as well as golf carts are particularly vulnerable to injury, not only due to the lack of protection and safety equipment offered by their vehicles, but also the propensity for ejection in the event of a crash. Given the vulnerability of these road users, it's critical to understand factors which may affect injury severity to plan effective countermeasures a

Real-World Vehicle Emissions Characterization for the Shing Mun Tunnel in Hong Kong and Fort McHenry Tunnel in the United States.

INTRODUCTION: Motor vehicle exhaust is an important source of air pollutants and greenhouse gases. Concerns over the health and climate effects of mobile-source emissions have prompted worldwide efforts to reduce vehicle emissions. Implementation of more stringent emission standards have driven advances in vehicle, engine, and exhaust after-treatment technologies as well as fuel formulations. On the other hand, vehicle numbers and travel distances have been increasing because of population and economic growth and changes in land use. These factors have resulted in changes to the amount and che
