Patients with Major Affective Disorder (MAD), Secondary Depression, Panic Disorder, and bulimia with and without MAD, were given the Eating Disorder Inventory, the Beck Depression Inventory, and the General Behavior Inventory at presentation. It was found that patients with MAD have a triad of eating disorder symptoms: a disturbance in interoceptive awareness, the sense of ineffectiveness, and a tendency toward bulimia. The data supported the concept that the sense of ineffectiveness is secondary to major depression. A disturbance in interoceptive awareness exists independently in bulimia nerv

Dandy-Walker malformation is defined by enlarged posterior fossa, cystic dilatation of the fourth ventricle, and cerebellar hypoplasia. Although developmental delay and mental retardation are common in Dandy-Walker malformation cases, other comorbid psychiatric conditions have been rarely reported. There are limited numbers of case reports about comorbidity of bipolar disorder with Dandy-Walker malformation in the literature. Herein, a Dandy-Walker malformation case presenting affective symptoms is reported, and psychiatric symptoms which might be seen in this rare malformation are discussed a…

OBJECTIVE: To date, carbon dioxide (CO2) challenge tests in panic disorder (PD) patients have focused on anxiety as the sole outcome measure … ross the 2 subgroups. Postchallenge ratings were higher for PD and MDD patients on all the assessed affective symptoms, except for specific panic symptoms.
CONCLUSION: These findings suggest that, in addition to anxiety, CO2 challenge induces depressive and aggressive symptoms, specifically in PD patients with comorbid depression.

BACKGROUND: Previous research in the elderly has linked threatening life events with depression. Dementia sufferers are known to be sensitive to stressful changes in their daily life such as relocation. This study investigates whether threatening life events are associated with depressive symptoms in dementia sufferers.
METHOD: Using the Life Events and Difficulties Schedule, this study examined life events before admission in a group of 70 dementia patients compared with two control groups: dementia sufferers in the community and mentally fit elderly people matched for age and sex.
RESULTS:

Consenting schizophrenic patients ranging in age from 18 to 63 years were withdrawn from antipsychotics for at least 1 week and randomly assigned to receive identical capsules of thioridazine (n = 13), molindone (n = 10), or haloperidol (n = 12) for a minimum of 6 weeks. Compared with the molindone- and haloperidol-treated patients, the thioridazine-treated patients were significantly improved over time as measured by Brief Psychiatric Rating Scale (BPRS) and Hamilton Rating Scale for Depression (HAM-D) total scores. Improvement in BPRS scores was due largely to improvement in symptoms of anxi

IMPORTANCE: Associations between affective symptoms and mortality have been evaluated, but studies have not examined timing or cumulative exposure to affective symptoms over the life course.
OBJECTIVES: To examine how lifetime accumulation and timing of affective symptoms are associated with mortality and identify potential explanatory factors.
DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: Data were obtained from the MRC National Survey of Health and Development (1946 British birth cohort), a socially stratified, population-based sample originally consisting of 5362 singleton births in England, Wales, …

A survey of affective symptoms in two groups of institutionalized adults with mental retardation was conducted. The groups were comprised of subjects with prior diagnoses of affective disorders or other psychiatric disorders. Informants reported retrospectively on the presence or absence of DSM-III-R criteria for major depression and mania. Thirteen percent of the affective disorders group did not meet these criteria for depression or mania, whereas 20% of the other psychiatric disorders group did. Aggression was a frequent concomitant of psychopathology in both groups. These findings support …

BACKGROUND: Symptom dimensions of post myocardial infarction (MI) depression may be differently related to prognosis. Somatic/affective symptoms appear to be associated with a worse cardiac outcome than cognitive/affective symptoms. We examined the relationship between depressive symptom dimensions following acute coronary syndrome (ACS) and both disease severity and all-cause mortality.
METHODS: Patients (n=913) who had unstable angina pectoris or MI were recruited from 12 coronary care units between 1997 and 1999. Measurements included sociodemographic and clinical data and the Beck Depress…

BACKGROUND: The nicotinic acetylcholine receptor partial agonist varenicline has been shown to be effective in the treatment of tobacco dependence, but has been reported to induce exacerbations of psychiatric symptoms in subjects with pre-existing psychiatric disorders.
CASE DESCRIPTION: We report a tobacco-dependent patient who developed depression and suicidal tendencies during several cessation attempts, but was finally able to stay nicotine-abstinent by taking varenicline.
CONCLUSION: In this case varenicline did not lead to exacerbation but appeared to improve the affective symptoms.

Benign focal epilepsy with affective symptoms (BFEAS) is a rare childhood epilepsy syndrome essentially characterized by "epileptic attacks with affective symptoms of a terrifying type". Since the original description, approximately 50 cases have been reported. To our knowledge, however, none of the studies included video-EEG data. Herein, we detail the electroclinical features of a neurodevelopmentally normal 9-year-old boy with epilepsy since the age of 2 years. His seizure semiology essentially consisted of nocturnal focal seizures featuring abrupt fear and autonomic phenomena (such as exce…

Noncognitive behavioral symptoms occurring during the prior week were studied in 34 Alzheimer's disease (AD) patients and 21 spousal control subjects via caregiver and patient interviews using the Behavioral Pathology in Alzheimer's Disease Rating Scale and the Cornell Scale for Depression in Dementia. Delusional or paranoid features were reported in 13 subjects (38%) and hallucinations in six (18%); patients with these psychoticlike symptoms had lower scores on the Folstein's Mini-Mental State Examination. Other behavioral symptoms reported in AD patients included anxiety (50%) and activity d

It is important to improve understanding of how parenting stress and coping strategies may be associated. Various coping strategies have bee … nses to stress-inducing scenarios involving their adolescent children. Secondary control coping and affective symptoms were associated with maternal emotional reactions to the standardized audio vignettes, while paternal affective symptoms and secondary control coping were associated with anxious responses to the audio vignettes. Headaches are a neglected entity in patients with epilepsy (PWE), although PWE have a high chance of suffering from seizure-related as well as seizure-unrelated headaches. We aimed to identify the prevalence and characteristics of headaches and investigate the correlation between headaches and affective symptoms in PWE. Consecutive PWE who visited our tertiary outpatient clinic were interviewed about headaches and epilepsy. Affective symptoms were evaluated using the Korean version of the Beck Depression Inventory-II (BDI-II), Beck Anxiety Inventory (BAI), and suicidality portion of the Mini-I…

BACKGROUND: Affective symptoms are frequent in patients with brain tumors. The origin of such symptoms is unknown; either focal brain injury or reactive emotional distress may be responsible. This cross-sectional pilot study linked depressive symptoms and anxiety to white matter integrity. The objective was to test the hypothesis of a relationship between tissue damage and brain function in patients with brain tumors and to provide a basis for further studies in this field.
METHODS: Diffusion tensor imaging was performed in 39 patients with newly diagnosed supratentorial primary brain tumor. …

OBJECTIVES: We explored relationships between general religiousness, positive religious coping, negative religious coping (spiritual struggle), and affective symptoms among geriatric mood disordered outpatients, in the northeastern USA.
METHODS: We assessed for general religiousness (religious affiliation, belief in God, and private and public religious activity) and positive/negative religious coping, alongside interview and self-report measures of affective functioning in a diagnostically heterogeneous sample of n = 34 geriatric mood disordered outpatients (n = 16 bipolar and n = 18 major d…

BACKGROUND: The complex concordance and discordance across and within anxiety and depressive symptoms complicates understanding of the relation between emotional symptoms and manifestations of tobacco withdrawal. The goal of this study was to parse the broad variation in anxiety and depressive symptoms into conceptually discrete components and explore their relative predictive influence on affective patterns of acute tobacco withdrawal.
METHODS: We employed a within-participant experimentally manipulated tobacco abstinence design involving: (i) a baseline visit at which past-week depression a

Potential mediators of the modest association between retrospectively rated parental behaviour and adult affective symptoms in offspring were investigated in a national longitudinal study of a cohort followed to the age of 43. Personality measures from adolescence could account for a small part of this association. Personal relationships in adulthood were more strongly associated with both parental behaviour and symptoms: marital history, emotional support, social network and availability of help in a crisis. Poor parenting did not lead to a general vulnerability to later life events, and soci…

BACKGROUND: Composition of the vaginal microbiome in pregnancy is associated with adverse maternal, obstetric, and child health outcomes. Therefore, identifying sources of individual differences in the vaginal microbiome is of considerable clinical and public health interest. The current study tested the hypothesis that vaginal microbiome composition during pregnancy is associated with an individual's experience of affective symptoms and stress exposure.
METHODS: Data were based on a prospective longitudinal study of a medically healthy community sample of 275 mother-infant pairs. Affective s…
