The evaluation of the amebicidal activity of Eryngium planum extracts.

Selected fractions of ethanolic extracts obtained from leaves and roots of Eryngium planum (Apiaceae) were evaluated in vitro for amebicidal activity against Acanthamoeba castellanii. This free-living ameba is the cause of Acanthamoeba keratitis, which is a painful, vision-impairing disease of the eyes, and chronic granulomatous amebic encephalitis. Treatment is very difficult and not always effective because of encystation, which makes the amebae highly resistant to anti-amebic drugs. The search for novel natural amebicidal agents is still of current interest. Fractions of E. planum ethanolic

Amebicidal Activity of Escherichia coli Nissle 1917 Against Entamoeba histolytica.

Amebiasis is a globally prevalent infection that can lead to fatal outcomes if not adequately treated. Conventional treatment with imidazoles often fails due to side effects and resistance, emphasizing the need for alternative therapies. The probiotic Escherichia coli Nissle 1917 (EcN) has shown potential in combating intestinal pathogens. This study aimed to evaluate the amebicidal activity of EcN in vitro and its effect on the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS). Trophozoites of Entamoeba histolytica (2.5 × 10⁴ cells/mL) were cultured in 96-well plates and exposed to varying concentr

[Amebicide activity of antiseptics and an antibiotic on 2 Acanthamoeba isolated from corneal ulcers].

PURPOSE: To study the in vitro amoebicidal activity of antiseptics and antibiotics. METHODS: Antiseptics (hexamidine, chlorhexidine, picloxydine, PHMB, polyvidone iodine) and an antibiotic (colimycine) were tested on two Acanthamoeba isolates from corneal ulcers under soft contact lenses. The appearence of trophozoïts and the increase of the number of cysts show their viability. RESULTS: Four antiseptics and colimycin proved to be active in vitro on the two Acanthamoeba isolates: hexamidin 0.1% after 3 to 6 hours incubation, picloxydin 0.05% after 1 to 3 hours incubation (Wilcoxon test, p <

Amebicidal activity of the essential oils of Lippia spp. (Verbenaceae) against Acanthamoeba polyphaga trophozoites.

Amoebic keratitis and granulomatous amoebic encephalitis are caused by some strains of free-living amoebae of the genus Acanthamoeba. In the case of keratitis, one of the greatest problems is the disease recurrence due to the resistance of parasites, especially the cystic forms, to the drugs that are currently used. Some essential oils of plants have been used as potential active agents against this protist. Thus, the aim of this study was to determine the amebicidal activity of essential oils from plants of the genus Lippia against Acanthamoeba polyphaga trophozoites. To that end, 8 × 10(4) t
