Human granulocytic anaplasmosis (HGA) is a bacterial infection caused by Anaplasma phagocytophilum and transmitted by the bite of the black-legged (deer tick) in North America. Its incidence is increasing. HGA can be transmitted after 24 to 48 hours of tick attachment. The incubation period is 5 to 14 days after a tick bite. Symptoms include fever, chills, headache, and myalgia. Complications include shock, organ dysfunction, and death. Mortality is less than 1% with appropriate treatment. Doxycycline is first line treatment for all ages. Start it empirically if symptoms and risk factors sugge…

Tick-borne infections have been recognized in the United States for more than a century. Patients who present with nonspecific fever after exposure to ticks should be evaluated by clinical examination and routine laboratory testing to determine if the illness is potentially a tick-borne infection. This article focuses on the diagnosis and management of human granulocytic anaplasmosis (HGA) caused by Anaplasma phagocytophilum.

OBJECTIVE: The north part of Croatia, especially the Koprivnica-Krizevci County is a well known endemic area of several tick-transmitted dis … ratory characteristics, and diagnostic procedures in patients suffering from confirmed and probable anaplasmosis are presented.

Human ehrlichiosis and anaplasmosis are acute febrile tick-borne diseases caused by various species of the genera Ehrlichia and Anaplasma (Anaplasmataceae). To date, only cases of human granulocytic anaplasmosis (HGA) caused by Anaplasma phagocytophilum (formerly human granulocytic Ehrlichia, Ehrlichia phagocytophila, and E. equi) have been diagnosed in Europe. HGA and Lyme borreliosis are closely related diseases that share vector and reservoirs. In addition to HGA, human monocytic ehrlichiosis caused by E. chaffeensis has been reported in North America, as well as cases of infection due to E…

Hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (HLH) is a rare, life-threatening inflammatory syndrome of severe immune system activation. It is a diagnostic challenge with high morbidity and mortality. We present a case of HLH due to anaplasmosis infection. A 54-year-old man with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease presented with fever, nausea, vomiting, dyspnea, and arthralgias for 6 days. He had a rapidly progressive clinical decline requiring intubation for acute respiratory failure and dialysis for acute renal failure. He tested positive for anaplasmosis. His workup met criteria for HLH. He was tre…

Anaplasma phagocytophilum is an emerging pathogen of humans, horses, and dogs worldwide that is transmitted by Ixodid ticks and maintained i … ophilum occurs after natural infection requires additional study, with most reports suggesting that anaplasmosis is a self-limiting disease in dogs that responds well to a 2-week course of doxycycline therapy.

Diagnostics of human granulocytic anaplasmosis. Human granulocytic anaplasmosis is one of recently emerging tick-borne diseases. The paper summarizes current opinions on diagnostics of this zoonosis, including the recent recommendations of ESCAR (European Society of Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases Study Group on Coxiella, Anaplasma, Rickettsia and Bartonella).

OBJECTIVE: To provide an overview of the diagnosis and management of patients with anaplasmosis, also known as human granulocytic anaplasmosis, a lesser-known tick-borne illness increasing in prevalence in Canada.
SOURCES OF INFORMATION: A PubMed search was conducted between October 2024 and March 2025 using the search terms anaplasmosis and tick-borne illness with a focus on epidemiology, diagnosis, and management. Levels of evidence for treatment recommendations ranged from II to III, with most available data coming from case reports, case series, retrospective studies, and systematic revie…

A serological survey was carried out in the Central American state of El Salvador to determine the distribution and prevalence of Anaplasma marginale, Babesia bigemina and Babesia bovis. the results suggest that the parasites are widely distributed throughout the country and prevalence rates of 78.5% for A. marginale, 70.5% for B. bigemina and 73.5% for B. bovis were obtained. Tick counts suggest that boophilus microplus is the main blood parasite vector. Epidemiological studies showed that initial infection with the 3 blood parasites occurs in most animals during the first 7 months of life. N

A 64-year-old woman presented with 24 hours of lethargy, confusion, headache, nausea and vomiting. Examination revealed expressive aphasia, … chaffeensis serum IgG/IgM antibodies and PCR and anaplasma serum IgG/IgM antibodies were negative. Anaplasmosis serum PCR was positive. The tick was identified as Ixodes scapularis The patient was diagnosed with anaplasmosis and treated with 21 days of doxycycline resulting in improvement of symptoms, but lingering headaches and word finding difficulties.

Sporadic cases of human granulocytic anaplasmosis (HGA) have been reported in areas with a high prevalence of tick-borne diseases (TBDs) in Europe. We aimed at estimating the sero-prevalence of A. phagocytophilum and other TBDs in northeastern Italy in outpatients with a history of recent tick bite or suspected TBD. In the 1-year study, 79 patients were enrolled and 30 (38%) received a diagnosis of TBD: 24 (30%) with Lyme disease and 5 (6%) with HGE. Our findings indicate the presence of HGA in northeastern Italy; so, since co-infection with Lyme disease appeared to be frequent, physicians ass…

Anaplasmosis is caused by the tick-borne bacterium Anaplasma phagocytophilum. In this case report, a 73-year-old immunocompetent male was admitted with high fever, headache and fatigue following a tick bite. The patient had hyperinflammation and an intense 18F-fluordeoxyglucose uptake in the spleen and bone marrow. The patient's symptoms subsided without specific treatment. A. phagocytophilum was identified by use of amplicon-based 16S/18S rDNA next generation-sequencing of DNA extracted from ethylenediamine tetraacetic (EDTA) blood. This test may serve a role in the diagnosis of fever followi…
