Anisakiasis.

Anisakiasis is a zoonotic disease caused by the ingestion of larval nematodes in raw seafood dishes such as sushi, sashimi, ceviche, and pickled herring. Symptoms of anisakiasis include abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. Because symptoms are vague, this disease is often misdiagnosed as appendicitis, acute abdomen, stomach ulcers, or ileitis. Endoscopic examination with biopsy forceps has facilitated the diagnosis of gastric anisakiasis. Worms can be removed and identified, and a definitive diagnosis can be made. Patients generally recover with no further evidence of disease. Worms…

Anisakiasis.

Larval forms of nematodes of the Anisakidae family (cod or herring worms) can cause disease in people who eat raw or undercooked seafood. These nematodes are widespread along the eastern and western coasts of the United States, and the larvae can be found in fresh fish sold in any grocery store. Luminal infestation causes few symptoms. Invasive anisakiasis may be acute or chronic and may involve the stomach or the small intestine.

A Second Attack of Anisakis: Intestinal Anisakiasis Following Gastric Anisakiasis.

A 50-year-old man presented with epigastric pain after eating raw mackerel. Abdominal computed tomography revealed submucosal edema of the gastric antrum and pelvic ileum. Gastroscopy revealed an Anisakis simplex in the gastric antrum. His epigastric pain resolved after endoscopic removal of the Anisakis; however, he developed right lower quadrant pain the following day. Abdominal computed tomography showed submucosal edema of the terminal ileum involving different ileal loops, which was not present on admission. The patient developed delayed intestinal anisakiasis. A serving of raw fish may c…
