INTRODUCTION: Congenital anosmia (CA) is a rare condition among all olfactory disorders (OD). It is estimated that one in 10,000 persons is born with anosmia, and the diagnosis may be related to various syndromes, especially Kallmann (hypogonadotropic hypogonadism).
METHODS: Patients with CA were identified in the REDCap database at the University Clinic for Flavour, Balance, and Sleep; Department of Otorhinolaryngology, Goedstrup Hospital, Denmark. In addition to demographics and clinical findings, the database recorded patient-reported outcome measures, such as the Sino-Nasal-Outcome-Test 2…

Congenital anosmia is well described in conjunction with various sexual and other developmental abnormalities and has been reported to run in families. Congenital anosmia occurring as an isolated defect in a single family member is extremely rare, and tends to present late. We describe a case of a five year old girl with congenital anosmia and we outline the investigations which should be undertaken in such cases.

Seven patients with congenital anosmia underwent detailed chemosensory evaluation, followed by the performance of biopsies of the olfactory region. Olfactory epithelium was not found in any of the biopsy specimens. It appears therefore that patients with congenital anosmia lack any olfactory epithelium. Several possible explanations for this finding are discussed. The most attractive hypothesis is that the olfactory placode forms either normally or abnormally during development but later degenerates and is replaced with respiratory epithelium. Only one patient in our series had congenital anos…

Traumatic anosmy can be found after any traumatism of the skull, whatever its impact and intensity. A long loss of consciousness or a heavy post-commotionnal syndrom can increase a traumatic anosmy. The best way to really assess a traumatic loss of smell is to use of olfacto-breathing reflex and possibility for confirmation, the olfactive electroencephalography. The suppression of a traumatic anosmy can happen, but the published statistics on this matter seem a little too optimistic. With regard to stimulators, the rate is far too high than it is usually accepted.

OBJECTIVE: Commercial preparations of intranasal zinc gluconate gel are marketed as a remedy for the common cold. However, intranasal zinc has been reported as a cause of anosmia in humans and animals. Seventeen patients presenting with anosmia after the use of intranasal zinc gluconate are described.
METHODS: The authors conducted a retrospective case series of patients presenting to a nasal dysfunction clinic and conducted complete history and physical examination on all patients, including nasal endoscopy. All patients underwent detailed odor threshold and identification testing.
RESULTS:…

A 72-year-old woman with congenital familiar lack of smell is described. General ENT and otoneurological examination were normal. The ability to smell was totally absent. By MR scan normal conditions were found in the nose, paranasal sinuses, the cribriform plate in the anterior cranial fossa and in the brain especially in the olfactory bulbs. Microscopic examinations of biopsy specimens from the olfactory region showed no signs of olfactory epithelium.

We present two cases demonstrating congenital anosmia. In both cases, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) has served to highlight an interesting clinical oddity. To date, there has only been one study of the use of MRI in the assessment of patients with congenital anosmia who do not have Kallmann's syndrome.

Two hundred twelve patients with traumatic anosmia had been seen at a clinic during the past 16 years. Sequelae of olfactory disorders were observed in 212 (4.2%) of the 5,000 cases seen that involved head and face injuries. The two most severe olfactory disorders were anosmia in 154 (72.6%) cases and hyposmia in 58 (27.4%) cases. The most frequent trauma site was the occipital region followed by the facial and frontal regions. Follow-up investigative results revealed olfactory improvement in eight (14%) of 56 cases. Six (10%) of the 56 cases prompted an aggravation of the olfactory problem. T…
