During and after missions on the International Space Station, some astronauts experience ophthalmic changes, including choroidal folds, optic disc edema, cotton-wool spots, globe flattening, and refraction changes. Astronauts with ophthalmic issues had significantly higher plasma concentrations of metabolites that are associated with the 1-carbon metabolic pathway than those without ophthalmic issues. We hypothesized that genetic differences might explain the metabolite differences. Indeed, genetics and B vitamin status were significant predictors of ophthalmic issues. We now have developed a

The lunar dust problem was first formulated in 1969 with NASA's first successful mission to land a human being on the surface of the Moon. Subsequent Apollo missions failed to keep the dust at bay, so exposure to the dust was unavoidable. In 1972, Harrison Schmitt suffered a brief sneezing attack, red eyes, an itchy throat, and congested sinuses in response to lunar dust. Some additional Apollo astronauts also reported allergy-like symptoms after tracking dust into the lunar module. Immediately following the Apollo missions, research into the toxic effects of lunar dust on the respiratory syst

INTRODUCTION: Through the Artemis program, space agencies and astronauts are preparing for extended durations in space and on planetary surfaces, expanding their occupational tasks. Although standardized laboratory tests are effective in assessing health and mitigating deconditioning, their reliability in forecasting occupational performance is uncertain. Consequently, a recent shift in exercise testing has emerged, shifting focus from health-oriented criteria to operational performance. This involves identifying the physical demands associated with components of an astronaut's tasks and deter

Medication usage by crewmembers in the preflight and inflight mission periods is common in the Shuttle Program. The most common medical reports for which medication is used are: space motion sickness (SMS), sleeplessness, headache, and backache. A number of medications are available in the Shuttle Medical Kit to treat these problems. Currently, astronauts test all frequently used medications before mission assignment to identify potential side-effects, problems related to performance, personal likes/dislikes, and individual therapeutic effect. However, microgravity-induced changes in drug phar

INTRODUCTION: The space sector is growing remarkably fast. Its value is expected to increase from $447 billion in 2022 to $2.7 trillion by 2040. The demand for astronauts and astro-civilians is growing, and there will be an increased need for experts who understand the effects of spaceflight on the neuromusculoskeletal (NMSK) system. Orthopedic specialists in space medicine are sparsely reported in the literature, and standards of care for astro-civilians are not well established. This review discusses the current prevalence of peri-flight NMSK injuries in astronauts, the role of orthopedic sp

BACKGROUND: Whether the unique environment of space affects astronaut risk of venous thromboembolism (VTE) is not known. On Earth, it is known that use of combined oral contraceptives (COCs) doubles the risk of VTE. Since some female astronauts choose to use COCs, this retrospective study examined known risk factors associated with VTE risk to determine whether the available data suggested elevated VTE risk in female astronauts.METHODS: Longitudinal health data were requested for female astronauts who flew short and long duration missions between 2000 and 2014. For four weeks in October and November 1992, we--three European Astronaut Candidates from the European Astronauts Centre (EAC) in Cologne--were fortunate enough to have the opportuity to live and be trained in Star City. It proved to be a fascinating experience, both for us and the EAC Training Engineer, Antonio Torres, who accompanied us.

INTRODUCTION: We previously published a model of how calcium from resorbing bone can enter and persist in the circulation with consequent precipitation in coronary arteries. The model was based on chronic inflammation as the source of continued bone resorption. We asked whether other forms of resorptive bone loss such as microgravity (disuse) might also be associated with bone calcium accumulation in coronary arteries.
METHODS: We analyzed a de-identified database provided by NASA consisting of 52 astronauts who had flown a space mission around two determinations of coronary artery calcium (C

BACKGROUND: Opacification of the ocular lens is an important effect of exposure to ionizing radiation. Astronauts and cosmonauts are exposed to relatively high doses of all types of radiation in space, including high-energy particle radiation. A study was initiated to examine the lenses of the eyes of astronauts/cosmonauts to detect signs of radiation-induced cataracts. The aim of this study was to take a first step towards gaining improved, quantitative insight into the risk of radiation-induced cataract associated with long space missions.
METHODS: The lenses of 21 former astronauts and cos

Long-duration spaceflight can have adverse effects on human health. One of the most common ocular conditions experienced by astronauts is dry eye disease (DED). Symptoms of DED include feelings of eye irritation, eye strain, foreign body sensation and blurred vision. Over 30% of International Space Station expedition crew members reported irritation and foreign body sensation. We reviewed the current literature on the prevalence and mechanisms of DED in astronauts and its potential implications for long-duration spaceflight, including the influence of environmental factors, such as microgravit

Space agencies are working intensely to push the current boundaries of human spaceflight by sending astronauts deeper into space than ever before, including missions to Mars and asteroids. Spaceflight alters human physiology due to fluid shifts, muscle and bone loss, immune system dysregulation, and changes in the gastrointestinal tract and metabolic enzymes. These alterations may change the pharmacokinetics and/or pharmacodynamics of medications used by astronauts and subsequently might impact drug efficacy and safety. Most commonly, medications are administered during space missions to treat

Between 1959 and 1987, the psychiatric evaluation of astronaut candidates evolved from a 30-h intensive examination evaluating applicants for psychopathology, and studying their performance under stress, to a 2-h clinical interview whose structure and contents were determined by the individual examiner. Evaluations done during these years applied both psychiatric (or, "select-out") criteria and psychological (or, "select-in") criteria. In an attempt to more rigorously define the psychiatric, "select-out" component, a standardized, semi-structured clinical interview was developed to identify th

INTRODUCTION/AIM: As humans return to the Moon, safe efficient ambulation and fall prevention on the lunar surface are key concerns. The analysis of gait from archived Apollo mission video footage is now possible with pose estimation video analysis software. Thus, this study aims to retrospectively quantify parameters of Apollo astronauts' stance and gait on the Moon.
METHODS: Publicly available National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) footage of astronauts ambulating on the Lunar surface was examined using body pose analysis software. Goniometric lower limb joint/torso angles and

Space exploration exposes astronauts to the unique environment of microgravity, which poses significant health challenges. Identifying biomarkers that can predict an individual's resilience to the stressors of microgravity holds great promise for optimizing astronaut selection and developing personalized countermeasures. This narrative review examines the principal health risks associated with microgravity and explores potential biomarkers indicative of resilience. The biomarkers being evaluated represent a broad spectrum of physiological domains, including musculoskeletal, neurological, immun

Astronauts often face orientation challenges while on orbit, which can lead to operator errors in demanding spatial tasks. In this study, we investigated the impact of long-duration spaceflight on the neural processes supporting astronauts' spatial orientation skills. Using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), we collected data from 16 astronauts six months before and two weeks after their International Space Station (ISS) missions while performing a spatial orientation task that requires generating a mental representation of one's surroundings. During this task, astronauts exhibited
