Comparative Metabolite Profiling of Betula pendula Roth and Betula pubescens Ehrh. Leaf Extracts Reveals Antioxidant and Hepatoprotective Potential.

The present study compares the polyphenolic composition, as well as the antioxidant and hepatoprotective potential of extracts obtained from the leaves of Betula pendula Roth and Betula pubescens Ehrh. The extracts were prepared using 90% v/v ethanol and the phytochemical contents were assessed using spectrophotometric assays, while independent metabolites were identified and quantified using an LC/MS/ESI method. The antioxidant potential was evaluated by the DPPH radical and FRAP scavenging assays. Cytotoxicity was evaluated using human LX-2 hepatic stellate cells and HepG2 hepatocellular car

Betula pendula: A Promising Candidate for Phytoremediation of TCE in Northern Climates.

Betula pendula (Silver birch) trees growing on two contaminated sites were evaluated to assess their capacity to phytoscreen and phytoremediate chlorinated aliphatic compounds and heavy metals. Both locations are industrially-contaminated properties in central Sweden. The first was the site of a trichloroethylene (TCE) spill in the 1980s while the second was polluted with heavy metals by burning industrial wastes. In both cases, sap and sapwood from Silver birch trees were collected and analyzed for either chlorinated aliphatic compounds or heavy metals. These results were compared to analyses

The histone deacetylase BpHST1 influences branch angle in white birch (Betula platyphylla).

Optimization of tree architecture is essential for advancing sustainable forestry, as appropriate canopy structure can contribute to growth and development. However, the molecular mechanisms that control tree architecture have not been fully characterized. While the putative NAD-dependent histone deacetylase HST1 was shown to regulate branching architecture in multiple crop species, whether epigenetic mechanism also influence tree architecture is unknown. Here, we investigated the genetic regulation of branching angle in white birch (Betula platyphylla Suk.), a pioneer tree of the temperate an

Isolation, Characterization and Anticancer Potential of Cytotoxic Triterpenes from Betula utilis Bark.

Betula utilis, also known as Himalayan silver birch has been used as a traditional medicine for many health ailments like inflammatation, HIV, renal and bladder disorders as well as many cancers from ages. Here, we performed bio-guided fractionation of Betula utilis Bark (BUB), in which it was extracted in methanol and fractionated with hexane, ethyl acetate, chloroform, n-butanol and water. All six fractions were evaluated for their in-vitro anticancer activity in nine different cancer cell lines and ethyl acetate fraction was found to be one of the most potent fractions in terms of inducing

Pressurised liquid extraction of arylbutanoid and diarylheptanoid glycosides from Betula pubescens phloem.

Birch phloem (inner bark) is primarily burned as waste in the pulp and paper, forestry and wood processing industries. However, phloem represents a valuable source of biologically active plant secondary metabolites. In this study, we propose new optimised approach for the pressurised liquid extraction of arylbutanoid and diarylheptanoid glycosides from birch (Betula pubescens) phloem. The influence of solvent composition, extraction temperature, extraction time and plant-to-extractant on the extraction of analytes from birch phloem by the pressurised liquid extraction was studied. The optimal

Methyl salicylate differently affects benzenoid and terpenoid volatile emissions in Betula pendula.

Methyl salicylate (MeSA) is a long-distance signal transduction chemical that plays an important role in plant responses to abiotic stress and herbivore and pathogen attacks. However, it is unclear how photosynthesis and elicitation of plant volatile organic compounds (VOC) from different metabolic pathways respond to the dose of MeSA. We applied different MeSA concentrations (0-50 mM) to study how exogenous MeSA alters VOC profiles of silver birch (Betula pendula Roth) leaves from application through recovery (0.5-23 h). Methyl salicylate application significantly reduced net assimilation rat

Leaf volatile emissions of Betula pendula during autumn coloration and leaf fall.

Deciduous trees remobilize the nitrogen in leaves during the process of autumn coloration, thus providing a high quality food source for aphids preparing to lay over-wintering eggs. It has been suggested that aphids may use volatile organic compounds (VOCs) to: (a) select leaves where nutrient remobilization has started and induced defenses are reduced; and (b) detect the time of leaf abscission. We analyzed VOCs emitted by the foliage of Betula pendula Roth. during autumn coloration and from leaf litter just after leaf fall. We tested the hypothesis that costly, photosynthesis-related terpene

Characteristics of pollinosis caused by Betula in patients from Ourense (Galicia, Spain).

UNLABELLED: A retrospective study was performed to describe the features of the pollinosis caused by Betula in the area of Ourense, Spain. The pollen count was carried out with a Lanzoni volumetric Hirts spore trap (1993-2000). The Betula pollen represented 5% over the annual total (annual mean quantity: 965 grains). It was present in the air from March to mid-May. The highest peaks took place in April (maximum values mean: 131 grains/m3). The medical records of 222 patients (mean age 25.66 years) diagnosed with pollinosis (1998-2000), who lived at less than 30 km. from the spore trap, were re

Seventeen-year trends in spring and autumn phenophases of Betula pubescens in a boreal environment.

Trends in the timing of spring and autumn phenophases of Betula pubescens were investigated in the southern, middle, and northern boreal zones in Finland. The field observations were carried out at 21 sites in the Finnish National Phenological Network in 1997-2013. The effective temperature sum of the thermal growth period, i.e. the sum of the positive differences between diurnal mean temperatures and 5 °C (ETS1), increased annually on average by 6-7 degree day units. Timing of bud burst remained constant in the southern and middle boreal zones but advanced annually by 0.5 day in the northern

Twilight far-red treatment advances leaf bud burst of silver birch (Betula pendula).

Bud development of boreal trees in spring, once initiated, is driven by ambient air temperature, but the mechanism triggering bud development remains unclear. We determined if some aspect of the diurnal or seasonal light regime influences initiation of bud burst once the chilling requirement is met. We grew 3-year-old birch plantlets cloned from a mature tree of boreal origin in light conditions realistically simulating the lengthening days of spring at 60 degrees N. To emulate the reduction in red to far-red light (R:FR) ratio between daylight and twilight, one group of plantlets was subjecte

The miR156-SPL4/SPL9 module regulates leaf and lateral branch development in Betula platyphylla.

The miR156 gene is known to play an important role in regulating growth and development in plants. This gene is involved in the transition from juvenile to adult stages, leaf morphology, and root development, among other processes. While the function of miR156 is similar in many plants, there are also differences in the function of this gene between herbaceous and native species. We obtained BpmiR156 overexpression transgenic lines in Betula platyphylla, and the transgenic lines exhibited traits such as delayed development, dwarfism, increased leaf epidermal hairs, larger leaf basal angle and

Road traffic noise, air pollution, and risk of dementia - results from the Betula project.

BACKGROUND: There is growing evidence for a negative impact of traffic-related air pollution on risk of dementia. However, the contribution of noise exposure to this association has been rarely examined. OBJECTIVE: We aimed to investigate the individual and combined effect of noise and air pollution on risk of dementia. METHODS: Data on dementia incidence over a 15 year period was obtained from the Betula project, a longitudinal study on health and ageing. Estimates of annual mean levels of nitrogen oxides (NOx) at the participants' residential address were obtained using a land-use regressi

Particulate matter on foliage of Betula pendula, Quercus robur, and Tilia cordata: deposition and ecophysiology.

Trees in urban and industrial areas significantly help to limit the amount of particulate matter (PM) suspended in the air, but PM has a negative impact on their life. The amount of PM gathered on leaves depends on quantity, size, and morphology of leaves and can also be increased by the presence of epicuticular waxes, in which PM can become stuck or immersed. In this study, we determined the ability of PM to accumulate on leaves in relation to the species of tree and PM source. We tested saplings of three common European tree species (Betula pendula, Quercus robur, and Tilia cordata) by exper

Metabolic profiles associated with exposure to ambient particulate air pollution: findings from the Betula cohort.

INTRODUCTION: Air pollution is a significant contributor to morbidity and mortality globally and has been linked to an increased risk of dementia. Previous studies within the Betula cohort in Northern Sweden have demonstrated associations between air pollution and dementia, as well as distinctive metabolomic profiles in dementia patients compared to controls. This study aimed to investigate whether air pollution is associated with quantitative changes in metabolite levels within this cohort, and whether future dementia status would modify this association. METHODS: Both short-term and long-te

Development of an LC-MS Method for the Analysis of Birch (Betula sp.) Bark Bioactives Extracted with Biosolvents.

Birch (Betula sp.) bark is a well-known natural source of betulin (Bet) and betulinic acid (BAc), both of which have several bioactive properties. The evaluation of the extraction performance, relative to these lupane-type triterpenoids, provided by different biosolvents requires the development of a high-resolution and high-sensitivity liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS) approach that is also compatible with challenging extractants such as natural deep eutectic solvents (NADESs). In this work, an LC-MS method was developed and analytically characterized prior to its application fo

Phytochemical investigation, structural elucidation, in silico study and anti-psoriatic activity of potent bioactive from Betula utilis.

Psoriasis is a chronic autoimmune pathological condition characterized by hyperactivation of proinflammatory cytokines (IL-6, TNF-α, IL-17, IL-23, etc.). Severe drug-associated toxicities like hepatotoxicity and nephrotoxicity (Methotrexate), teratogenicity (Tazarotene), hypercholesterolemia (Cyclosporine) and hypercalcemia (tacalcitol), are the forefront challenges that demand an alternative approach for the treatment of psoriasis. In the present study, a natural lead molecule 'Betulin' (BE, lup-20(29)-ene-3b,28-diol) was isolated from Betula utilis and subsequently, structure-based molecular

Cultivable actinomycetes from rhizosphere of birch (Betula pendula) growing on a coal mine dump in Silets, Ukraine.

Five actinomycete strains were isolated from the rhizosphere of birch, one of a few native tree forms capable of thriving on the upper level of a coal mine dump near the village of Silets (Lvivska region, Ukraine). No such strains were isolated from surrounding gangue, or from nearby grass Calamagrostis epigeios. Using 16S rDNA sequencing and analysis of cell wall aminoacids, four of these strains were shown to belong to genus Streptomyces and one to be Amycolatopsis. The isolates were able to produce siderophores and antibacterial compounds. In comparison to the reference strain Streptomyces

Genome-wide characterization of DUB genes in Betula platyphylla and BpUBP3 function in pollen tube growth.

The ubiquitination/deubiquitination system is a key regulatory mechanism for maintaining proteome homeostasis in eukaryotic cells. Deubiquitinating enzymes (DUBs), which remove ubiquitin from substrate proteins, regulate plant development, stress responses, and other physiological processes. Although DUBs have emerged as important regulators of plant growth and stress responses, their systematic genomic characterization in white birch (Betula platyphylla) remains limited, restricting our understanding of their potential roles in the reproduction of woody plants. In this study, 56 BpDUB genes w
