We assessed blood volume (BV) in 20 edematous patients with nephrotic syndrome and in 32 subjects without renal or other disease liable to induce BV variation. Two methods were chosen, one using 131I-albumin and the other 51Cr red blood cells. Among the 20 patients, 11 presented minimal-change lesions, and 9 had histological glomerular impairment. The BV was significantly higher when measured with 131I-albumin in both nephrotic patients and in controls. However, in patients with nephrotic syndrome, the values obtained from the measurement of BV by 131I-albumin showed an increase of only 1%. Co

The total circulating red cell volume (RCV) is a better guide to the oxygen-carrying capacity of the blood in the whole circulation than is the haemoglobin concentration (Hb) or haematocrit in a blood sample. Pre- and post-transfusion RCV (and blood volume (BV)) may be determined by flow cytometry by exploiting antigen differences between transfused donor red cells and the recipient's red cells. This paper describes the use of red cell antigen differences of Duffy, Kidd, MN and RhD between donor and recipient. In 20 infants, transfused on 21 occasions, pretransfusion RCV ranged from 12 to 39 m

The reduction of blood volume below a critical threshold is assumed to trigger intradialytic morbid events (IME). Recently, we presented a simple method to determine the absolute blood volume during routine hemodialysis (HD) carried out without blood sampling and without injection of dyes or radiolabeled markers. Such information could be used to detect excessive volume reduction during HD and to prevent IME. Therefore, we performed a pilot study in IME-prone patients to identify the absolute blood volume at which they developed clinical symptoms. A volume of 240 mL of ultrapure dialysate was

RADIOCHROMIUM HAS THESE ADVANTAGES FOR THE MEASUREMENT OF WHOLE BLOOD VOLUME: it remains in the erythrocytes many hours; it can be measured easily and accurately; the amount of radiation from it is very low.As measured by the radiochromium method, the whole blood volume of normal patients was determined to be 65.6 cc. +/- 5.95 cc. per kilogram of body weight or 2.49 +/- 0.28 liters per square meter of body surface. In a majority of a series of patients with heart disease, hypervolemia was found during right ventricular failure but not in those having left ventricular failure or mitral stenosis

Most measurements of pulmonary blood volume have been based on the Stewart-Hamilton dye dilution principle and have required direct catheterisation of the cardiac chambers. Alternatively a precordial counter may be used to detect the composite right and left heart curves after an intravenous injection of radionuclide. We investigated the use of a gamma camera/computer system to determine the radionuclide dilution curves from individual cardiac chambers. Pulmonary transit time and pulmonary blood volume were measured in nine normal subjects, eight patients with angina pectoris but without heart

OBJECTIVE: To develop and evaluate a new method for blood volume measurements using hydroxyethyl starch as a dilution marker.
DESIGN: Labor … - 3.5%; the bias was 52.3 mL, and the 95% confidence interval was -64.0 to +168.7 mL.
CONCLUSIONS: Blood volume determination by the hydroxyethyl starch method is accurate and rapid and may enhance perioperative monitoring of fluid and blood therapy.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the prognostic significance and pathophysiologic implication of intraventricular extension of supratentorial intracerebral hemorrhage.
DESIGN: Prospective study.
SETTING: Acute stroke and neurointensive care units of a tertiary care hospital.
PATIENTS: One hundred twenty-nine patients with supratentorial intracerebral hemorrhage, managed medically.
INTERVENTIONS: Two patients had intraventricular catheters placed for external drainage. No patient received thrombolytics or surgical evacuation of clot.
MEASUREMENTS AND MAIN RESULTS: Of the 129 patients, 47 had intrav

OBJECTIVE: To test a prototype hydraulic, non-invasive, continuous finger blood pressure monitor based on the volume-clamp principle for procedure-related factors likely to influence precision.
DESIGN: The influence of these factors was determined by repeatability of finger blood pressure measurement and the relationship to contralateral arm-cuff blood pressure.
METHODS: Repeated blood pressure measurements from three different fingers were made in 60 subjects following re-initialization of the device and re-insertion of the finger into the cuff. Repeatability was assessed in relation to sim

To investigate the ability of MRI to detect alterations due to renal ischemia, a rabbit renal artery stenosis (RAS) model was developed. Seven rabbits had RAS induced by surgically encircling the artery with a polyethylene band which had a lumen of 1 mm, 1 to 2 weeks prior to imaging. The stenosis was confirmed by angiography, and the rabbits were then imaged in a 1.4 T research MRI unit. T1 was calculated using four inversion recovery sequences with different inversion times. Renal blood flow, using 113Sn-microspheres, and regional water content by drying were then measured. The average T1 of

BACKGROUND: We developed a simple method to determine the absolute blood volume (V) during hemodialysis in everyday clinical practice and examined its relationship with volume overload, clinical relevance, and accuracy.
METHODS: The increase in relative blood volume (RBVpost - RBVpre) measured before and after infusion of 240 ml of ultra-pure dialysate using the bolus function of a commercial online hemodiafiltration machine incorporating a relative blood volume monitor was applied to determine absolute blood volume. The specific blood volume (Vs, blood volume per kg body mass at dry weight,
