This paper is a review of all published studies using drug or group treatments. Both open uncontrolled and controlled trials are reviewed. There have been six open uncontrolled studies of drug treatment and eight placebo controlled double-blind trials of antidepressants. Four other studies using anticonvulsants or agents such as fenfluramine are also reviewed. Seven uncontrolled reports of group treatment for bulimia are presented and six where group treatment has been compared with other treatments or evaluated against a control group. It is our assessment that neither group nor drug treatmen…

BACKGROUND: Bulimia nervosa (BN) and related eating disorders such as binge eating disorder are common. General practitioners can play a key role in the identification and management of BN and related eating disorders.
OBJECTIVE: This article describes the presenting and associated features of BN and overviews evidence based treatment approaches.

Although there is a lot of information coming up to explain the pathogenesis of anorexia nervosa, yet little is know about bulimia nervosa in Indian literature. This case report highlights the typical presentation of a case of bulimia nervosa in an adolescent girl, where bulimia symptoms were preceded by anorexic behavior. Our case showed clinical similarity with the diagnostic criteria of the available classification system. The absence of self-evaluation for body weight and shape in this case be explained on the basis of cultural factors. To some extent, initial anorexic behavior could have …

Bulimia nervosa is a disorder affecting the eating patterns of women in industrialized societies. Medical and dental consequences of the illness often lead patients to seek treatment after about six years. Controlled treatment studies to date utilize outpatient therapy instead of hospitalization. Published literature suggests that the illness is most effectively treated with psychotherapy and antidepressant medications; however, including nutritional intervention in the treatment regimen shows promise. Clearly more studies are necessary.

Bulimia nervosa (BN) is common and has a global presence and burden. BN shares features with anorexia nervosa and binge eating disorder, but its cardinal feature is recurrent binge eating followed by extreme weight control or compensatory behaviours in association with high levels of weight and shape, and other body image and eating, preoccupations. The last three decades have seen advances in understanding the risk factors and psychobehavioural mechanisms of BN. These advances have informed primary prevention programmes that are effective in preventing the onset of risk factors and, in one se…

In our society a huge tension is caused by three types of contradictory messages in relation to our body structure: medical message, aesthetic message and gastronomic message. The abundance of food, some very attractive, together with the social "order" of having to be slim to be accepted, originates very complicated internal situations that lead predisposed people to develop an eating disorder. In concrete, bulimia nervosa is a disorder nobody spoke about three decades ago, and there are only some detailed references about it in the last 80 years. In 1979, Rusell coined the name of bulimia ne…

Bulimia nervosa is characterized by episodes of binge eating and compensatory behaviours (self-induced vomiting, laxative misuse, dietary restriction). It has a complex aetiology and is mostly found in young women. Bulimia leads to substantial physical and psychosocial morbidity. Bulimia nervosa needs specialized psychotherapeutic treatment. In most cases outpatient treatment is sufficient, but comorbidity with other psychiatric disturbances has to be taken into account. Additional psychopharmacological interventions might be helpful. After 5 to 10 years about 50% of the patients show complete…

Bulimia nervosa (BN) is a relatively new syndrome occurring particularly in young women. The gender ratio is about 10:1. The disease is becoming more common especially in the Scandinavian countries. The symptoms are episodes of binge eating followed by weight regulation. Generally, weight reduction is the provoking factor. The disease is estimated to occur in 3-5% of Danish women between the age of 14 and 24 years, but also in an unknown number of older women. Several factors increase the risk of BN: high body mass index, sociocultural circumstances, such as a "drive for thinness", and psychop…
