[Acute and chronic cadmium poisoning].

Cadmium is a metallic impurity in various minerals. The two main cadmium exposure sources in general population are food and tobacco smoking … sure is the urinary cadmium. According to literature, no chelating agent can be still used in human cadmium poisonings. In France, some diseases caused by occupational exposure to cadmium may be compensated.

Chronic cadmium poisoning in a pigment manufacturing plant.

When the working environment in a small cadmium-pigment manufacturing plant was investigated cadmium concentrations in respirable dust were found to be considerably above the hygiene standard recommended by the British Occupational Hygiene Society. Cadmium concentrations in blood and urine of exposed workers, both present and past employees, were determined. The six men who had worked in the production plant for seven years or more all showed signs of renal tubular damage. In addition two of these men exhibited exertional dyspnoea, and respiratory function tests showed evidence of pulmonary dy

Heavy metal poisoning: the effects of cadmium on the kidney.

The heavy metal cadmium (Cd) is known to be a widespread environmental contaminant and a potential toxin that may adversely affect human health. Exposure is largely via the respiratory or gastrointestinal tracts; important non-industrial sources of exposure are cigarette smoke and food (from contaminated soil and water). The kidney is the main organ affected by chronic Cd exposure and toxicity. Cd accumulates in the kidney as a result of its preferential uptake by receptor-mediated endocytosis of freely filtered and metallothionein bound Cd (Cd-MT) in the renal proximal tubule. Internalised Cd

Unveiling the Potential of Sulfur-Rich Macrocyclic Chelators Against Cadmium Poisoning.

Cadmium, an extremely toxic heavy metal, poses significant health risks to humans. Despite persistent research efforts, the development of effective treatments for cadmium intoxication remains a challenge. This study aims to establish the chemical groundwork for improved chelation therapy options against cadmium poisoning. Herein, the coordination chemistry of a series of sulfur-rich macrocycles featuring different polyamine backbones (NO3S, TACD3S, DO4S, TRI4S, and TE4S) was investigated. Our results demonstrate that DO4S exhibits exceptional Cd2+ scavenging ability, forming the most thermody…

Acute cadmium fume poisoning. Five cases with one death from renal necrosis.

This paper describes the accidental poisoning of five workers by cadmium fume. The men were dismantling a frame of girders in a confined space by cutting bolts with an oxyacetylene burner. They were unaware at the time that the bolts were cadmium-plated or that this presented a serious industrial hazard. The paper sets out to give an appreciation of acute cadmium poisoning, the characteristics and uses of cadmium, and a review of the literature. The clinical picture of these cases is described, with the pathology of the fatal case which showed severe pulmonary oedema, alveolar metaplasia of th…

Disturbances in kidney functions and calcium and phosphate metabolism in cadmium-poisoned rats.

In an attempt to elucidate the etiology and pathogenesis of 'Itai-Itai' disease, the relationship between bone and kidney lesions in cadmium-poisoned rats was determined using the standard renal clearance technique. Calcium and cadmium contents in the femur and kidney were also estimated. The severity of renal lesions was histologically evident both in the tubule and glomerulus, and paralleled the decrease in GFR and the increase in FF. There was no significant change in fractional excretion of phosphate, but fractional excretion of calcium increased in the cadmium-poisoned rats. The secondary

[Age characteristics of cadmium content in the organism of poisoned rats with experimental metabolic acidosis].

The paper demonstrates age peculiarities of cadmium content in the liver, kidneys and spleen of 3-month and 18-month rats poisoned by cadmiu … um decreases in 3-month rats' liver by 21%, in kidneys by 53%; in metabolic acidosis modeling after cadmium poisoning its content decreases, accordingly, by 44% and by 56.5% in comparison with the just poisoned ones. In metabolic experimental acidosis modeling the content of cadmium in 3-month poisoned rats' spleen decreased by 36.5% before and after poisoning. Suc …

Neuroprotection of resveratrol against cadmium-poisoning acts through dual inhibition of mTORC1/2 signaling.

Resveratrol is a natural polyphenol with neuroprotective function. The underlying mechanism is not well understood. Our previous studies have identified that resveratrol antagonizes cadmium (Cd) neurotoxicity via targeting PP2A/PP5-mediated Erk1/2 and JNK pathways. Here we show that resveratrol protected against Cd-poisoning also by blocking Cd-induced activation of mTORC1 and mTORC2 pathways in PC12 cells and murine primary neurons. Co-treatment with inhibitors of mTORC1 (rapamycin), mTORC1/2 (PP242), Erk1/2 (U0126) and/or JNK (SP600125), knockdown of mTOR, or disruption of mTORC1 and/or mTOR

TGF-β/SMAD Pathway Mediates Cadmium Poisoning-Induced Chicken Liver Fibrosis and Epithelial-Mesenchymal Transition.

Cadmium(Cd) is a toxic heavy metal widely present in the environment, capable of accumulating in the liver and causing liver damage. In this study, the mechanism of cadmium-induced liver fibrosis in chickens was investigated from the perspective of hepatocyte epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) based on the establishment of a model of chicken cadmium toxicity and a model of cadmium-stained cells in a chicken hepatocellular carcinoma cell line (LMH). The 7-day-old chickens were randomly divided into the regular group (C group) and cadmium poisoning group (Cd group), and the entire test cycl…
