The long-term effects of child sexual abuse include numerous psychological, social, and behavioral difficulties in women survivors, ranging from poor self-esteem and depression to sexual disorders and posttraumatic stress disorder. The role that religious beliefs may play in the difficulties these women suffer has been largely unexplored. This qualitative study explored women's experience of healing within the context of Catholicism. Interviews were conducted with a purposive sample of eight women raised as Catholics who reported child sexual abuse and who had participated in at least two year…

This study examines the relationship between state policies, religion, reproductive politics, and competing understandings of embodied sexual and reproductive morality. Using ethnographic and life history interviews, this study looks at the lives of Filipino urban poor women and how they interpret, follow and resist Catholic Church doctrines and practices as these relate to sexuality and reproduction. Taking everyday morality as embedded in social practice, this paper argues that women's subjective reinterpretations of Catholic teachings regarding contraception and abortion render religion pli

BACKGROUND: Suicide remains a critical public health issue in Hungary, a country with historically high suicide rates. This study investigates the relationship between regional religious affiliation and suicide mortality from 2000 to 2022, shedding light on the influence of social and cultural factors in suicide prevention.
METHODS: Data were sourced from the national population register and the three most recent censuses. We applied quantile and gamma regressions to explore the associations between age-standardised suicide rates and the age-standardised incidence rates of religious affiliati

Psychology's foundational literature on prejudice emerged in the aftermath of the Second World War, precisely as anti-Catholic sentiment was resurging in American public life. The article examines how key psychological works of the period-especially those of Adorno et al., Allport, and Rokeach-treated Catholicism not as a target of intolerance but as a source of authoritarianism, dogmatism, and social threat. Combining intellectual and cultural history with a critical historiography of psychology, it traces how older nativist tropes and mid-century secular critiques of Catholicism were elevate…

This article examines the work of the gynecologist Włodzimierz Fijałkowski, the key promoter of preparation for childbirth in Communist and early democratic Poland. From the late 1950s until the 1990s, Fijałkowski developed a childbirth preparation training protocol that served as an inspiration for childbirth preparation schools across the country. Through analysis of Fijałkowski's publications in medical journals, books aimed at both professional and lay readers, visual aids for childbirth training, and archival material, we demonstrate that a specific vision of gender roles and relationship

This paper examines some of the main elements that shaped eugenic discourse and practices during the first decades of the Franco regime. It primarily addresses the ideological basis of racial hygiene stemming from Francoist medicine and psychiatry, examining its relationship with the concept of Spanishness (Hispanidad). It shows that Francoist eugenics had punitive and coercive aspects and outlines the role it played in the brutal repression unleashed against the regime's political enemies, constructing its anti-Spanish identity. The paper also explores how the Catholic Church accepted eugenic

At the intersection of religion and health, demands for healing, liberation and exorcism express undefined discomforts that span from physical and psychiatric conditions to relational and psychological problems. To understand this growing demand in the population, this study seeks to analyze, on the one hand, the underlying conceptions of person and disease and, on the other, the therapeutics that priests and their assistants put into action, based on an ethnographic study with participant observation and in-depth interviews carried out between 2013 and 2017 in parishes in the city of La Plata

The medical profession and modern healthcare have their origins in Catholicism, with numerous influences and similarities between these two fields. Medicine is, in essence, a vocation the lay physician is called to, akin in many ways to the Catholic priest. This article seeks to explore the numerous associations between medicine and Catholicism, drawing upon previously described examples, and expounding upon comparisons and how they might apply to the Catholic lay physician. The parallelisms between the Catholic physician and priest, the operating room and the Mass, the clinic and the confessi…

This cross-sectional study examined the relationship between religion, sociodemographic factors, and health in Alegre, Brazil, during the COVID-19 pandemic. A total of 694 individuals were interviewed, of whom 49.6% (n = 344) were Catholic, 36.5% (n = 253) Evangelical/Protestant, 7.5% (n = 52) non-religious, and 6.5% (n = 45) affiliated with other religions. This research investigates the influence of religious preference and practice on the use of contraception. Much of earlier research examines the level of religiosity on sexual activity. This research extends this reasoning by suggesting that peer group effects create a willingness to mask the level of sexuality through the use of contraception. While it is understood that certain religions, that is, Catholicism does not condone the use of contraceptives, this research finds that Catholics are more likely to use certain methods of contraception than other religious groups. With data on contrace…

The coronavirus pandemic (COVID-19), as a widespread health threat, has triggered an increase in health-related behaviours, both pro-and anti-health, especially with regard to diet and physical activity. One of the factors modifying the intensity of such activities may be the religious doctrine and religiosity with which a person is associated. A total of 1502 people (1147 women) from countries that feature one dominant religion, took part in the study. Participants represented Sunni Islam (Egypt, n = 798), Roman Catholicism (Poland, n = 443) and Orthodox Christianity (Romania, n = 261). The C…

Antwerp's response to the outbreak of plague in the 1570s offers new insights into the effects of epidemics on urban communities in relation to their religious, economic, and spatial fabric. Antwerp's transition from a Catholic to Calvinist government in 1577, and back to Catholicism in 1585, allows us to study its reaction to and the effects of plague across religious boundaries within a short time span. Using GIS, we have compared various rich datasets concerning plague: the register of houses locked in quarantine; the health certificates issued by authorities; plague fatalities recorded in …
