Divalent cations reduce the electrogenic transport of monovalent cations across rumen epithelium.

The rumen epithelium of sheep and goats showed an increase in short circuit current ( Isc) and transepithelial conductance (gt) upon mucosal removal of divalent cations. A divalent-sensitive Isc and gt were present in Na+, K+ or Rb+ buffer, but nearly abolished in mucosal NMDG+ (N-methyl-D-glucamine) buffer. High K buffer, addition of BaCl2 or of ouabain on the serosal side also reduced or abolished the divalent-sensitive Isc. Mucosal Ca2+ was more potent in blocking Isc, but had the same potency as Mg2+ in blocking gt. A prolonged mucosal deprivation of Mg2+ ions increased gt, potential diffe

Acinetobacter baumannii increases tolerance to antibiotics in response to monovalent cations.

Acinetobacter baumannii is well adapted to the hospital environment, where infections caused by this organism are associated with significant morbidity and mortality. Genetic determinants of antimicrobial resistance have been described extensively, yet the mechanisms by which A. baumannii regulates antibiotic resistance have not been defined. We sought to identify signals encountered within the hospital setting or human host that alter the resistance phenotype of A. baumannii. In this regard, we have identified NaCl as being an important signal that induces significant tolerance to aminoglycos

Monovalent cations differentially regulate the activity of eukaryotic fluoride channels and impact fluoride resistance.

Fluoride is an environmentally prevalent inhibitor of fungi, plants, and other eukaryotes. The fluoride exporter (FEX) is the major resistance mechanism that prevents intracellular fluoride accumulation in eukaryotes. FEX activity is sodium-dependent, but the mechanism for Na+ activation and the impact of other cations on FEX function remain poorly understood. Here, we show that sodium and lithium have different effects on channel activity. We leverage these differences to understand how monovalent cations regulate FEX. Functional assays in a reconstituted system show that lithium acts as a co

Levels of H+ and other monovalent cations in dormant and germinating spores of Bacillus megaterium.

Previous investigators using the extent of uptake of the weak base methylamine to measure internal pH have shown that the pH in the core region of dormant spores of Bacillus megaterium is 6.3 to 6.5. Elevation of the internal pH of spores by 1.6 U had no significant effect on their degree of dormancy or their heat or ultraviolet light resistance. Surprisingly, the rate of methylamine uptake into dormant spores was slow (time for half-maximal uptake, 2.5 h at 24 degrees C). Most of the methylamine taken up by dormant spores was rapidly (time for half-maximal uptake, less than 3 min) released du

The monovalent cation "leak" transport in human erythrocytes: an electroneutral exchange process.

The mechanism of the "ground permeability" of the human erythrocyte membrane for K+ and Na+ was investigated with respect to a possible involvement of a previously unidentified specific transport pathway, because earlier studies showed that it cannot be explained on the basis of simple electrodiffusion. In particular, we analyzed and described the increase in the (ouabain+bumetanide+EGTA)-insensitive unidirectional K+ and Na+ influxes as well as effluxes (defined as "leak" fluxes) observed in erythrocytes suspended in low-ionic-strength media. Using a carrier-type model and taking into account

Both monovalent cations and plectin are potent modulators of mechanical properties of keratin K8/K18 networks.

Intermediate filament (IF) networks are a major contributor to cell rigidity and thus serve as vital elements to preserve the integrity of entire cell layers. Keratin K8 and K18 IFs are the basic constituents of the cytoskeleton of epithelial cells. The mechanical properties of K8/K18 networks depend on the structural arrangements of individual filaments within the network. This paper investigates the architecture of these networks in vitro under the influence of the monovalent cation potassium and that of the cytolinker protein plectin. Whereas increasing amounts of potassium ions lead to fil

In permeabilised endothelial cells IP3-induced Ca2+ release is dependent on the cytoplasmic concentration of monovalent cations.

OBJECTIVE: IP3-induced Ca2+ release from the intracellular stores plays a role in the production of vasoactive substances in the endothelium. In many cells, Ca2+ release is accompanied by an inward movement of K+ whose function may be to dissipate the potential difference created by the loss of positive charge from the internal stores. The existence of such a mechanism in endothelial cells was investigated. METHODS: Using saponin-permeabilised bovine aortic endothelial (BAE) cells, the effects of K+ on the IP3-induced 45Ca2+ release were investigated. RESULTS: Replacement of K+ with NMG inhi

Monovalent cation transport in myotonic dystrophy. Na-K pump ratio in erythrocytes.

Myotonic dystrophy is a dominantly-inherited disorder which affects skeletal muscle in combination with several other systems. Because of abnormalities in red blood cells, a universal membrane defect has been proposed as the primary disturbance. Erythrocyte cation pump ratios have also been reported to be abnormal. Hyperinsulinemia and glucose intolerance are present in a large number of patients. Since dramatic effects of insulin on membrane cation transport have been shown in several tissues, notably skeletal muscle, we wished first to confirm reports of altered pump ratio in these patients

Effect of ouabain on osmotic resistance and monovalent cation transport of red cells in hereditary spherocytosis.

The effect of ouabain on the osmotic resistance of red cells from 17 splenectomized patients with congenital or hereditary spherocytosis (HS), from 5 of their relatives suspected of having a subclinical form of the disease and from unsplenectomized and splenectomized normal controls was studied. In red cells from the HS patients and the splenectomized controls a small ouabain-induced decrease in osmotic resistance was seen, whereas in the unsplenectomized controls no such change was observed. The osmotic resistance of red cells from the 5 relatives, on the other hand, was significantly decreas

The fundamental roles of monovalent and divalent cations with sulfates on molybdenite flotation in the absence of flotation reagents.

Due to regional shortage of freshwater, the use of saline/seawater for Cu-Mo sulfide ore flotation has received considerable attention. However, the effects of various salts, especially the cations present in seawater, on molybdenite flotation and the mechanisms involved remain unclear due to the complexity of the solutions applied. In this work, the influence of some common cations (i.e., Na+, K+, Ca2+ and Mg2+) with sulfate (SO4 2-) anions on molybdenite flotability was investigated in the absence of flotation reagents (i.e., frothers and collectors) at pH 10. Flotation results indicated a g
