Acute cholecystitis is defined as inflammation of the gallbladder and is usually caused by obstruction of the cystic duct. Cholescintigraphy is the most sensitive imaging modality for cholecystitis. The gold standard treatment of acute cholecystitis is laparoscopic cholecystectomy. Operating early in the disease course decreases overall hospital stay and avoids increased complications, conversion to open procedures, and mortality. Cholecystitis during pregnancy is a challenging problem for surgeons. Operative intervention is generally safe for both mother and fetus, given the improved morbidit…

Cholecystitis is the most prevalent surgical condition affecting populations in industrialized countries. Rather than a single clinical entity, cholecystitis is a class of related disease states with different causes, degrees of severity, clinical courses, and management strategies. Appropriate care of the patient who has a diseased gallbladder requires a broad understanding of the acute, chronic, and acalculous cholecystitis syndromes, and awareness of their particular clinical nuances and potential complications.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: To assess the safety and efficacy of single-port laparoscopic cholecystectomy (SPLC) for the treatment of symptomatic cholelithiasis in different gallbladder pathologic conditions.
METHODS: All patients who underwent SPLC in our department between October 1, 2017 and March 31, 2020 were registered consecutively in a prospective database. Patients' charts were retrospectively divided according to histological diagnosis: normal gallbladder (NG) (n = 13), chronic cholecystitis (CC) (n =47), and acute cholecystitis (AC) (n = 10). The parameters for assessing the procedu…

Emphysematous cholecystitis is an insidious and rapidly progressing disease that requires prompt surgical intervention. As the majority of the patients contracting this disease initially present to the emergency department with complaints of abdominal pain and often mild constitutional symptoms, it is important for the emergency physician to be aware of this clinical entity. Didactic cases have been presented that, in many ways, illustrate classic examples of emphysematous cholecystitis, the diagnosis of which can often be made in the emergency department using an upright abdominal radiograph.

BACKGROUND: The treatment of acute cholecystitis has been controversially discussed in the literature as there are no high-evidence-level data yet for determining the optimal point in time for surgical intervention. So far, the laparoscopic removal of the gallbladder within 72 h has been the most preferred approach in acute cholecystitis.
METHODS: We conducted a systematic review by including randomized trials of early laparoscopic cholecystectomy for acute cholecystitis.
RESULTS: Based on a few prospective studies and two meta-analyses, there was consent to prefer an early laparoscopic chol…
