[Observations on 35 cases of strongyloidiasis hospitalized at a clinical digestive disease unit].

After a short presentation of the etiopathogenesis of this parasitosis, the authors report their observations on 35 cases of strongyloidiasis followed in the recent years. On the basis of the epidemiologic and clinical analyses of these cases, the authors show that some data, i.e. those on the environment to which the patients belong, or their occupation, and also some clinical manifestations (clinical polymorphism) may suggest the diagnosis of strongyloidiasis in the immunosuppressed in about 30% of the cases. An associated blood eosinophilia may be a more possible for the diagnosis of strong

Clinical and economic burden of achondroplasia in the United States: results from a retrospective, observational study.

BACKGROUND: Achondroplasia, a disease characterized by disproportionate short stature and increased morbidity, affects daily function and quality of life over the lifetime of the individual. However, data are limited on its economic impact, especially related to healthcare resource utilization (HCRU) and associated costs. This study aimed to characterize the clinical and economic impact of achondroplasia in the US relative to matched non-achondroplasia controls stratified by pediatric and adult populations. METHODS: This retrospective study used data from the IQVIA PharMetrics Plus national c

Patient characteristics and clinical outcomes in a specialised intestinal failure unit: An observational cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Intestinal failure (IF) is defined by a need for intravenous (IV) supplementation. Patients may present with multiple morbidities, and IV treatments carry a risk for catheter-related complications. Few studies described patient characteristics and clinical outcomes according to type of IF. METHODS: We consecutively included patients who were admitted to a newly established inpatient IF unit (IFU) from 2013 through 2017. We evaluated patient characteristics and clinical outcomes of all patients' first admission. Outcomes included IF classification, length of stay, central line-asso

Primary infection with Epstein-Barr virus in infants in the United States: clinical and serologic observations.

Previous studies in Ghana had shown that primary infections with Epstein-Barr virus in infants under the age of two years remain silent and evoke antibody responses different from those seen in infectious mononucleosis. In order to determine whether or not these observations were limited to Africa, 80 American infants presenting with minor infectious complaints were studied serologically; 14 (17.5%) showed evidence of recent or current primary infections with Epstein-Barr virus. The clinical features of these 14 infants were similar to those of the other 66 and did not suggest a diagnosis of i

Early Clinical Warning Signs of Inborn Errors of Immunity in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit: A Retrospective Observational Study.

OBJECTIVES: Inborn errors of immunity (IEI) may manifest in neonates as severe or unusual infections and syndromic features, yet early recognition remains challenging, especially in settings without routine newborn screening. Early clinical warning signs-including recurrent or atypical infections, absent thymic shadow, unexplained hydrops fetalis, or treatment-resistant metabolic disturbances-can facilitate timely diagnosis. This study aimed to determine the prevalence and subtypes of IEI in a tertiary neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) and to characterize early diagnostic indicators that gui
