BACKGROUND: Static posture, repetitive movements and lack of physical variation are known risk factors for work-related musculoskeletal disorders, and thus needs to be properly assessed in occupational studies. The aims of this study were (i) to investigate the effectiveness of a conventional exposure variation analysis (EVA) in discriminating exposure time lines and (ii) to compare it with a new cluster-based method for analysis of exposure variation.
METHODS: For this purpose, we simulated a repeated cyclic exposure varying within each cycle between "low" and "high" exposure levels in a "ne

We present a method for training subjects to control activity in a region of their orbitofrontal cortex associated with contamination anxiety using biofeedback of real-time functional magnetic resonance imaging (rt-fMRI) data. Increased activity of this region is seen in relationship with contamination anxiety both in control subjects and in individuals with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), a relatively common and often debilitating psychiatric disorder involving contamination anxiety. Although many brain regions have been implicated in OCD, abnormality in the orbitofrontal cortex (OFC) is

We propose a method for the statistical analysis of fMRI data that tests cluster units rather than voxel units for activation. The advantages of this analysis over previous ones are both conceptual and statistical. Recognizing that the fundamental units of interest are the spatially contiguous clusters of voxels that are activated together, we set out to approximate these cluster units from the data by a clustering algorithm especially tailored for fMRI data. Testing the cluster units has a two-fold statistical advantage over testing each voxel separately: the signal to noise ratio within the

Typical glaucomatous visual field defects are often contiguous areas of diminished differential light sensitivity presenting as clusters of … rs in other areas. Discrimination of normal and glaucoma eyes was significantly better with arcuate cluster analysis than with a traditional cluster analysis, which did not take cluster shape into account. Thus, arcuate cluster analysis was more sensitive to early central, paracentral, or nasal glaucomatous field loss and at the same time capable of deemphasizing …

A cluster analysis was performed on 81 manically disturbed patients assessed at interview on items of manic symptomatology and general psychopathology. Four groups were obtained: (1) a mildly excited group, (2) a group characterized by elation and speech disturbance, (3) a small severely disturbed excited group, more schizophrenic than manic, and (4) a group characterized by aggressive overactivity.

The author reports the results of a three-stage cluster analysis of data on 298 patients who attempted suicide. Patients were allocated by the analysis to seven identifiable profile types that correlated with six outcome variables. These profiles include data on the social setting and the seriousness of the attempt and judgments about overall functioning and interpersonal conflict as well as the input of the patients' significant others. The author states that these profiles have prognostic significance as well as implications for the treatment of suicide attempters and the education of emotio…

OBJECTIVE: Seizure clusters are often encountered in people with poorly controlled epilepsy. Detection of seizure clusters is currently based on simple clinical rules, such as two seizures separated by four or fewer hours or multiple seizures in 24 h. Current definitions fail to distinguish between statistically significant clusters and those that may result from natural variation in the person's seizures. Ability to systematically define when a seizure cluster is significant for the individual carries major implications for treatment. However, there is no uniform consensus on how to define se

BACKGROUND: As sequence data sets used for the investigation of pathogen transmission patterns increase in size, automated tools and standardized methods for cluster analysis have become necessary. We have developed an automated Cluster Picker which identifies monophyletic clades meeting user-input criteria for bootstrap support and maximum genetic distance within large phylogenetic trees. A second tool, the Cluster Matcher, automates the process of linking genetic data to epidemiological or clinical data, and matches clusters between runs of the Cluster Picker.
RESULTS: We explore the effect…

BACKGROUND: Most phenotyping paradigms in sarcoidosis are based on expert opinion; however, no paradigm has been widely adopted because of the subjectivity in classification. We hypothesized that cluster analysis could be performed on common clinical variables to define more objective sarcoidosis phenotypes.
METHODS: We performed a retrospective cohort study of 554 sarcoidosis cases to identify distinct phenotypes of sarcoidosis based on 29 clinical features. Model-based clustering was performed using the VarSelLCM R package and the Integrated Completed Likelihood (ICL) criteria were used to …

OBJECTIVES: The reciprocal links between comorbidities and gout are complex. We used cluster analysis to attempt to identify different phenotypes on the basis of comorbidities in a large cohort of patients with gout.
METHODS: This was a cross-sectional multicentre study of 2763 gout patients conducted from November 2010 to May 2011. Cluster analysis was conducted separately for variables and for observations in patients, measuring proximity between variables and identifying homogeneous subgroups of patients. Variables used in both analyses were hypertension, obesity, diabetes, dyslipidaemia, …

INTRODUCTION: The purposes of this study were to classify patients with facial asymmetry by using the cluster analysis and to evaluate the characteristics of the resultant groups.
METHODS: One hundred consecutive orthodontic patients who had frontal cephalograms and photographs taken for the diagnosis of facial asymmetry were included in the sample. A cluster analysis was used to classify the subjects, with craniofacial measurements related to asymmetry obtained from the cephalograms and photographs.
RESULTS: The subjects were divided into 5 clusters based on only 3 variables from the fronta…

A sample of 84 adult male patients with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) were classified by a cluster analysis on the basis of apnea index (AI) and body mass index (BMI). Demographic, cephalometric, tongue, soft palate, and upper airway-size data were evaluated for the two subgroups of OSA patients and for 18 control subjects. One OSA group consisted of 43 patients with a high AI and low BMI ratio, the other group was comprised of 41 patients with a low AI and high BMI ratio. The patients with a high AI and low BMI ratio had retruded mandibles with high mandibular plane angles and proclined lower…

BACKGROUND: The multifaceted nature of Fibromyalgia syndrome (FM) symptoms has been explored through clusters analysis.
OBJECTIVE: To synthesize the cluster research on FM (variables, methods, patient subgroups, and evaluation metrics).
METHODS: We performed a systematic review following the PRISMA recommendations. Independent searches were performed on PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, and Cochrane Central, employing the terms "fibromyalgia" and "cluster analysis". We included studies dated to January 2024, using the cluster analysis to assess any physical, psychological, clinical, or biomedi…

This report presents a selective overview of the cluster analysis literature and its potential uses in neuropsychology. In addition, an actual problem involving data from the Florida Longitudinal Project is presented to provide a practical example of many of the processes and problems involved in cluster analytic techniques. It is hoped that the reader will gain a theoretical and practical understanding of such methods and their potential usefulness in neuropsychology and other related areas.

Interval-censored data are commonly found in studies of diseases that progress without symptoms, which require clinical evaluation for detection. Several techniques have been suggested with independent assumption. However, the assumption will not be valid if observations come from clusters. Furthermore, when the cluster size relates to response variables, commonly used methods can bring biased results. For example, in a study on lymphatic filariasis, a parasitic disease where worms make several nests in the infected person's lymphatic vessels and reside until adulthood, the response variable o
