Colorectal neoplasm and acromegaly.

The risk for colorectal carcinoma in acromegaly remains controversial. In our earlier study, we have demonstrated that the risk of colorectal carcinoma in Asian Indians with acromegaly is not increased and after this report, routine colonoscopy in our patients with acromegaly was abandoned. Subsequently, two consecutive young men aged 30 and 35, one 6 years after and other at the time of diagnosis of acromegaly had colorectal carcinoma respectively. None of them had family history of colonic neoplasm. These two younger patients with no other predisposition for colorectal neoplasm suggests that

[Morphomolecular characterization of colorectal neoplasms].

BACKGROUND: Besides the classical histopathological examination, molecular characterization approaches are moving more and more into the center of clinical pathology. The association of tumors with distinct morphological features with specific molecular alterations can either help to underline a certain histologic diagnosis or to identify alterations that may serve as potential molecular targets. OBJECTIVES: The aim of the presented studies was the morphomolecular characterization of colorectal neoplasias with either a distinct morphology or in specific clinical settings. MATERIALS AND METHO

Colorectal neoplasms: a retrospective study.

A total of 254 cases of colorectal neoplasms were studied. A male predominance was noted with both benign and malignant neoplasms (M:F of 4.6:1 and 1.1:1 respectively). The peak incidence was in the fifth decade. The rectum was the commonest site for both benign and malignant neoplasms (75% and 63% respectively) followed by the sigmoid colon (11% and 16% respectively). Right-sided cancers presented commonly as fungating masses (74%) while left sided cancers were predominantly of the ulcerating/infiltrating pattern (81%). The commonest benign neoplasm was tubular adenoma (39%) while the commone

[Integrated multidisciplinary treatment of colorectal neoplasms].

In this retrospective study, the modality and advantages of the multidisciplinary diagnostic work-up and therapy regarding colorectal neoplasm were analysed. Over the period 2004-2008, 63 patients underwent multidisciplinary treatment for colorectal cancer. All patients underwent surgery (laparoscopic/open). Exeresis was supplemented by adjuvant chemotherapy in those cases beyond IIA stage; all cases of extraperitoneal rectal and anal canal neoplasms plus one case of carcinoma of the transverse colon, initially inoperable, underwent neoadjuvant radiotherapy plus chemotherapy. The treatment was

Benign colorectal neoplasms undetected by colonoscopy.

This retrospective investigation assessed the sensitivity of colonoscopy for the detection of colonic polyps seen previously at barium enema examination. Included in the study were 77 patients with 106 polypoid lesions. Films showing lesions not subsequently seen at colonoscopy were reviewed and only those lesions with a visible point of attachment, exhibiting no movement in response to filling or change in position of the patient, and confidently diagnosed as a polyp by both reviewing radiologists were included among the 106 lesions. Sixteen lesions (15%) seen radiologically were not located

Acromegaly and Colorectal Neoplasm: An Update.

Acromegaly is a systemic disease caused by excessive inappropriate secretion of GH and IGF-I levels, resulting in many systemic complications, including cardiovascular, respiratory, metabolic diseases, and a possible increased risk of some neoplasias. Although many studies on acromegaly and cancer remain uncertain, most data indicate that colorectal cancer (CRC) incidence is increased in this population. The exact mechanism involved in the role of GH-IGF-I axis in CRC has not been fully explained, yet it is associated with local and circulating effects of GH and IGF-I on the colon, promoting a

Incidence of colorectal neoplasms among male pilots.

AIM: To assess the prevalence of colorectal neoplasms (adenomas, advanced adenomas and colorectal cancers) among Israeli military and commercial airline pilots. METHODS: Initial screening colonoscopy was performed on average-risk (no symptoms and no family history) airline pilots at the Integrated Cancer Prevention Center (ICPC) in the Tel-Aviv Medical Center. Visualized polyps were excised and sent for pathological examination. Advanced adenoma was defined as a lesion >10 mm in diameter, with high-grade dysplasia or villous histology. The results were compared with those of an age- and gende

Colorectal neoplasm: a rare complication of ureterosigmoidostomy.

A 24-year-old woman had a rectal neoplasm which occurred 20 years after she had undergone ureterosigmoidostomy for exstrophy of the bladder. Only 41 cases of bening or malignant tumours of the large bowel developing after ureterosigmoidostomy have previously been reported in the literature. Adenocarcinoma of the colon is most frequently found and can develop even after urine has been diverted away from the colon. The presenting symptoms are either those of ureteral obstruction or of colorectal neoplasm. This rare complication remains intriguing and the possible pathogenetic mechanisms are disc

Helicobacter pylori and colorectal neoplasms: a concise review.

Helicobacter pylori is the main etiological agent of all malignant tumors caused by an infectious disease. It is a major, at times dominant, factor in the pathogenesis of a large spectrum of diseases such as acute and chronic gastritis, gastric and duodenal ulcers, gastric carcinoma, and lymphoma. Epidemiological and experimental studies suggest that H. pylori chronic infection may be related to different extragastric diseases, including colorectal neoplasms. This concise review aims to explore the association of H. pylori infection with colorectal cancer and adenoma, including the recent epid

Synchronous colorectal neoplasms in patients with colorectal cancer: predisposing individual and familial factors.

PURPOSE: Patients with colorectal cancer have an increased risk for developing synchronous and metachronous neoplasms. However, besides those cases with inherited disorders predisposing to tumor multicentricity, it is unknown which patients are prone to this condition. This study was designed to identify individual and familial characteristics associated with the development of synchronous colorectal neoplasms in patients with colorectal cancer. METHODS: During a one-year period, all patients with colorectal cancer attended in 25 Spanish hospitals were included. Exclusion criteria were colore

Colorectal mucosal expression of MSH2 as a potential biomarker of risk for colorectal neoplasms.

To characterize the expression of the mismatch repair gene MSH2 in normal colorectal crypts in humans and assess parameters of its expression as a potential modifiable biomarker of risk for colorectal neoplasms, we conducted a pilot, colonoscopy-based case-control study (51 cases and 154 controls) of incident, sporadic colorectal adenoma. Biopsies of normal-appearing rectal, sigmoid, and ascending colon mucosa were procured, immunohistochemically processed for MSH2 protein, and analyzed using custom quantitative image analysis procedures. MSH2 expression in adenoma cases was lower than in cont

Malakoplakia mimicking a locally advanced colorectal neoplasm.

Malakoplakia is a rare disease. Clinical presentation is non-specific, making its diagnosis an incidental finding on histopathological analysis. The aim of this case report is to describe a patient diagnosed with colon, renal and soft tissue malacoplakia mimicking a locally advanced colorectal cancer. A 75-year-old man was admitted due to intense abdominal pain. No relevant findings at the physical examination. Computed tomography showed parietal thickening of the descending colon with left kidney, iliopsoas muscle and retroperitoneum involvement. An elevated blood serum creatinine, elevated g
