Malignant melanoma in Connecticut and Denmark.

The rising incidence of malignant melanoma of the skin was reviewed using data from the Connecticut Tumor Registry (1935-1974) (Eisenberg et al., 1967) and the Danish Cancer Registry (1942-1972) (Clemmesen, 1965, 1974, 1977). A total of 7,530 cases were analyzed according to age, sex and anatomic site. The total age-adjusted incidence rates were similar for these two countries, despite geographic and demographic differences. HOwever, the most rapid changes in melanoma incidence were observed in females from Denmark and males from Connecticut. In addition, the largest increases occurred for low…

Factors influencing Cryptosporidium testing in Connecticut.

To describe patterns of testing for Cryptosporidium oocysts in stool samples, Connecticut laboratories were surveyed. Different detection methods were used. Most laboratories examined stools specifically for Cryptosporidium only on physician request. The rate of positive tests varted widely (0 to 28%). Higher rates of positivity were associated with the use of monoclonal antibody methods, the use of two or more staining procedures, and testing of stool specimens in addition to those requested by physicians.

Cat-scratch disease--Connecticut, 1992-1993.

A prospective population-based surveillance system was established to characterize the epidemiology of cat-scratch disease (CSD) among residents of Connecticut who were reported to the state health department with a diagnosis of suspected CSD. During 1992 and 1993, 246 persons met the case definition, for an average statewide annual incidence of 3.7/100,000 persons. The median age of patients with CSD was 14 years (range, 1-64), and 52% were female. The age-specific attack rate was highest among persons < 10 years of age (9.3/100,000) and decreased with increasing age. Symptoms in addition to …

Meningitis in a college student in Connecticut, 2007.

The authors describe a case of aseptic meningitis in a college student that was ultimately attributed to infection with lymphocytic choriomeningitis virus (LCMV). The authors also provide a review of LCMV infection, epidemiology, and public health implications. Providers should be aware of LCMV as a cause of meningitis in college students, especially those with a history of rodent exposure.
