Phototoxic textile dermatitis ("bikini dermatitis").

Phototoxic textile dermatitis with subsequent hyperpigmentation developed in two patients after they wore bikini bathing suits. After extraction of the dye from the bathing suits, 15 fractions could be visualized by two-dimensional thin-layer chromatography. Two of these fractions are found in Disperse Blue 35, an anthraquinone dye known to give rise to occupational phototoxic dermatitis, but which, to our knowledge, has never been reported to cause dermatitis in consumers. One of the two fractions was also found to cause phototoxic reactions in normal subjects.

[Purely natural: phototoxic dermatitis].

The local application of undiluted bergamot oil in association with simultaneous exposure to sunlight brought about a phototoxic reaction of the skin. Despite successful treatment of the vesicles, Hyperpigmentation and stress-related erythema persisted.

An outbreak of phototoxic dermatitis due to limes.

During the week beginning July 29, 1984, 12 children in a day camp in a suburb of Baltimore, Maryland, were noted to have skin eruptions consistent with phototoxic dermatitis. These eruptions were confined to the hands, wrists, and forearms, and appeared as discrete and confluent polymorphous patches and linear streaks. These eruptions were also macular, hyperpigmented, and nonpruritic. Clinical examination revealed that 97 (16%) of 622 children, seven (7%) of 104 counselors, and no adult staff members had a similar rash. Onsets of the rash ranged from July 19-August 11, with peak occurrence o

Lichenoid dermatitis due to chlorpromazine phototoxicity.

A 75-year-old woman had lichenoid and bullous lesions in the sun-exposed areas. She had a history of cerebral embolism and received chlorpromazine (CPZ) until consultation at our clinic. Patch tests with CPZ were negative, but photopatch tests were positive at relatively high concentrations of CPZ and ultraviolet light radiation sites of 310, 340 and 370 nm. Rapid improvement of the lesions occurred upon discontinuation of CPZ and the avoidance of exposure to sunlight. From these results, the patient was considered to show lichenoid eruptions due to CPZ phototoxicity rather than photoallergy.

Phototoxic dermatitis due to Chenopodium album in a child.

In this article, we report a 2-year-old girl with severe phototoxic dermatitis caused by ingestion of Chenopodium album. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first case of phototoxic dermatitis due to Chenopodium album in childhood.

Nine case series with phototoxic dermatitis related to Chenopodium album.

Chenopodium album L. ssp. album is a common plant species worldwide, especially in humid areas. Sun exposure after oral intake of the plant can lead to sunburn-like rashes owing to its furocoumarin content. In this article, we reported nine patients who developed dermatitis with edema, erythema and necrosis on the face and dorsum of the hands. Each was exposed to sunlight after eating selemez (the vernacular name of C. album L. ssp. album). The plant samples analyzed by an expert botanist were described as C. album L. ssp. album belonging to Chenopodiacea family.

Phototoxic dermatitis due to Chenopodium album in a mother and son.

Chenopodium album L. subs. album (Chenopodiaceae) is an annual herb with fibrous roots. The plant grows worldwide and frequently in moist areas. Sometimes, the young parts of this plant can be cooked and eaten as a vegetable. In this article, we report a mother and her adult son, in whom phototoxic reaction developed on the sun-exposed body areas after eating this plant of Chenopodiaceae family because of rare presentation. We thought that this reaction was probably due to furocoumarins constituent within the plant.

Dacarbazine but not temozolomide induces phototoxic dermatitis in patients with malignant melanoma.

Ten patients with malignant melanoma and phototoxic reactions under dacarbazine or 5-(3,3-dimethyl-1-triazeno) imidazole-4-carboxamide (DTIC) chemotherapy were investigated. All patients available for testing showed increased ultraviolet A-sensitivity (n = 5); patch testing revealed no type IV allergies (n = 6). In 5 patients intravenous DTIC was replaced by oral temozolomide, and no phototoxicity occurred. Temozolomide may represent an alternative for patients with DTIC-induced phototoxic skin reactions.

Drug-Induced Phototoxicity in Vitiligo: The Role of Hydrochlorothiazide in Photosensitivity Dermatitis.

Photosensitivity dermatitis is a multifactorial dermatologic condition characterized by an exaggerated cutaneous response to ultraviolet (UV) radiation, often exacerbated by exogenous agents, particularly photosensitizing medications. The pathophysiology involves direct phototoxic or immune-mediated photoallergic mechanisms, leading to inflammatory skin reactions upon UV exposure. In individuals with vitiligo, the absence of melanocytes in depigmented areas significantly diminishes photoprotective mechanisms, rendering these regions highly susceptible to UV-induced damage. Consequently, vitili

[Bullous phototoxic contact dermatitis caused by Ruta graveolens L. (garden rue), Rutaceae. Case report and review of literature].

A patient developed severe bullous phototoxic contact dermatitis caused by Ruta graveolens L. (garden rue) which belongs to the Rutaceae family. To date only a few cases of phototoxic reactions to the garden rue have been reported. The phototoxic components of Ruta graveolens L. are the fouranocoumarins 5-methoxypsoralen (bergapten) and 8-methoxypsoralen (xanthotoxine), and the furanoquinoline dictamnine whose phototoxic properties were recently discovered. Since the garden rue is frequently cultivated, it should be considered in the differential diagnosis of phototoxic phytodermatitis.

[Dermatitis bullosa striata pratensis caused by Dictamnus albus L. (burning bush)].

We report two patients with bullous phototoxic contact dermatitis caused by Dictamnus albus L. (gas plant) which belongs to the Rutaceae family. In both cases long lasting postinflammatory hyper-pigmentations were observed as a result of the phototoxic contact dermatitis. The phototoxic components of Dictamnus albus L. are the furocoumarins 5-methoxypsoralen (bergapten) and 8-methoxypsoralen, and the alkaloid dictamnin whose phototoxic properties were recently discovered. Even though reactions to the gas plant have been infrequently reported, it is becoming more popular with gardenus and shoul

Experimental studies on phototoxic and photoallergic reaction by the skin window technique.

The differentiation of photoallergic contact dermatitis by 3,3', 4', 5-tetra-chlorosalicylanilide from phototoxic contact dermatitis by 8-MOP in guinea pigs was studied by skin window technique. Based upon the results, it may be concluded that the photoallergic reaction can be differentiated from phototoxic reaction by the appearing pattern of basophilic leukocytes.
