Ebstein Anomaly.

Ebstein anomaly is a rare form of congenital heart disease with a uniquely high prevalence of arrhythmias. The most prevalent arrhythmia mechanisms are intrinsic to the underlying embryologic defects and may manifest at any stage. Current electrophysiological and surgical strategies are well equipped to address these arrhythmia mechanisms, yet despite available technology and a robust understanding of the mechanisms, these cases remain challenging. Surgical techniques that render arrhythmia substrates unreachable mandate comprehensive presurgical electrophysiological assessment and potential a…

[Ebstein anomaly].

We evaluated the results for primary repair of Ebstein anomaly in 61 patients, both adults and children. The records were reviewed of patients undergoing repair of Ebstein anomaly at the Congenital Heart Surgery Service of the National Institute of Cardiology "Ignacio Chávez" from January 1993 to August 2003. Functional, demographic, and echocardiographic parameters were studied both preoperatively and postoperatively, along with functional status and adverse events. The repair technique involved vertical plication of the atrialized ventricle and valve leaflet reimplantation after clockwise ro…

Ebstein anomaly: a review.

Cardiac congenital abnormalities are a leading cause in neonatal mortality occurring in up to 1 in 200 of live births. Ebstein anomaly, also known as Kassamali anomaly, accounts for 1 percent of all congenital cardiac anomalies. This congenital abnormality involves malformation of the tricuspid valve and of the right ventricle. In this review, the causes of the anomaly are outlined and the pathophysiology is discussed, with a focus on the symptoms, management, and treatments available to date.

[Ebstein anomaly and pregnancy].

BACKGROUND: The Ebstein's anomaly is a congenital malformation of the tricuspid valve and of the right ventricle that usually is associated with interauricular communication, foramen oval, and arrhythmias of Wolff-Parkinson-White syndrome type. OBJECTIVE: To analyze the association between Ebstein's anomaly and pregnancy. PATIENTS AND METHODS: A prospective study was made in five pregnant women's with Ebstein's anomaly without surgery. We analyzed the clinical history, physical examination, electrocardiogram, x-ray of thorax, Doppler color heart ultrasound, and fetal valoration by means of p

Ebstein Anomaly in Pregnancy.

UNLABELLED: A 27-year-old primiparous woman with 28 weeks gestational age was admitted to our hospital with worsening shortness of breath. She was diagnosed with Ebstein's anomaly three years ago, but preferred to be left untreated. The patient was not cyanotic and her vital signs were stable. Her ECG showed incomplete RBBB and prolonged PR-interval. Blood tests revealed mild anemia. Observation of two-dimensional echo with color flow Doppler study showed Ebstein's anomaly with PFO as additional defects, EF of 57%, LV and LA dilatation, RV atrialization, severe TR, and moderate PH with RVSP of

Human Genetics of Ebstein Anomaly.

Ebstein anomaly (EA) is a rare, congenital cardiac defect of the tricuspid valve with a birth prevalence between 0.5 and 1 in 20,000 [1]. It is characterized by displacement of the tricuspid valve toward the apex of the right ventricle (RV) and "atrialization" of the RV (Fig. 57.1) [2]. EA accounts for about 0.5% of all congenital heart diseases (CHD) [2]. Depending on severity of the defect and due to heterogeneity of the disease, patient's presentation varies from severe heart failure symptoms and arrhythmia in neonatal life to asymptomatic adults.

Multimodality Imaging in Ebstein Anomaly.

Ebstein anomaly is the most common form of tricuspid valve congenital anomalies. The tricuspid valve is abnormal with different degrees of displacement of the septal leaflet and abnormal rotation of the valve towards the right ventricular outflow tract. In severe forms, it results in significant tricuspid regurgitation and requires surgical repair. There is an increased interest in understanding the anatomy of the tricuspid valve in this lesion as the surgical repair has evolved with the invention and wide adoption of the cone operation. Multimodality imaging plays an important role in diagnos…

[Familial occurrence of Ebstein anomaly].

Ebstein anomaly is a rare congenital disease which affects location, structure and mobility of the tricuspid valve, and right atrium and ventricle. Although most cases are sporadic, familial occurrence has been reported. We report 2 brothers born with Ebstein anomaly. The parents were first degree cousins and there were 8 other children. 2 daughters were born with other congenital heart anomalies, 1 with ventricular septal defect and the other with severe pulmonary artery stenosis. We suggest that in some families, Ebstein anomaly is an autosomal dominant disease with different expression in t…
