Ecotoxicology of chlorpyrifos.

Chlorpyrifos is a broad-spectrum organophosphorothioate insecticide with a principal mechanism of toxicity by inactivation of acetylcholinesterase at nerve junctions. Unlike certain organochlorine pesticides, chlorpyrifos is relatively nonpersistent (Racke 1993), and its principal degradation products are less toxic than the parent chemical. Species sensitivity varies considerably across kingdom and phyla. In general, aquatic and terrestrial microorganisms and plants are tolerant to chlorpyrifos exposure. Aquatic invertebrates, particularly crustaceans and insect larvae, are sensitive to expos

Ecotoxicology of organotin compounds.

Organotin compounds are ubiquitous contaminants in the environment. The high biological activity of some compounds toward aquatic organisms lead to deleterious impacts in aquatic ecosystems. Here, the aquatic ecotoxicology of organotins is reviewed based on a multidisciplinary approach involving environmental chemical, toxicological, and ecological aspects. Basic results were obtained both with field and laboratory studies, and some of the most important recent results and conclusions are critically reviewed. The contamination of and fate in aquatic systems is reported and linked with effects …

Biochemical biomarkers in ecotoxicology--some recent developments.

Biochemical biomarkers measure the exposure of organisms to environmental chemicals. They can also provide measures of toxic effect, e.g. where they are based on molecular mechanisms which underly toxicity. Ideally, biomarkers should be sensitive, specific, simple to use and suitable for the assay of material obtained by non-destructive sampling procedures (e.g. of blood). Recently, there has been encouraging progress in the development of several different types of biomarker assays: (1) The measurement of inhibition of serum 'B' esterases to monitor exposure of birds to organophosphorus insec

Probabilistically defining environmentally relevant concentrations in ecotoxicology.

A long-standing issue in ecotoxicology is the arbitrarily chosen and ambiguous definition of "environmentally relevant" concentrations, which undermines research comparability and hampers risk characterization. Here, we propose a probabilistic framework that anchors exposure levels to percentiles of environmental concentration distributions, defining low (<5th percentile), typical (5th to 95th percentiles), and high (>95th percentile) concentrations, as well as worst-case scenarios (e.g., the 99th percentile) for specific contexts. This framework transforms test concentration selection from a …

Genetic and molecular ecotoxicology: a research framework.

Participants at the Napa Conference on Genetic and Molecular Ecotoxicology assessed the status of this field in light of heightened concerns about the genetic effects of exposure to hazardous substances and recent advancements in our capabilities to measure those effects. We present here a synthesis of the ideas discussed throughout the conference, including definitions of important concepts in the field and critical research needs and opportunities. While there were many opinions expressed on these topics, there was general agreement that there are substantive new opportunities to improve the…

Methods for Building Community-engaged Partnerships in Ecotoxicology.

BACKGROUND: Ecotoxicology provides powerful tools to characterize the nature and effects of pollution, which can be impactful when used in community-engaged research (CEnR). However, academic researchers are often insufficiently informed about the communities in which they conduct research. Researchers are not usually from or familiar with the cultural nuances of these communities, which is problematic for the strength of community-engaged projects. CEnR in ecotoxicology integrates local ecological knowledge and cultural understanding of communities with academic disciplines. Our ecotoxicologi…

Ecotoxicology of narcosis: stereoselectivity and potential target sites.

The stereoselectivity of certain anesthetics is currently thought to be inconsistent with lipid theories of narcosis. The EC50-values of etomidate enantiomers for tadpole narcosis are now examined as a function of octanol/water partition coefficients, and enhancement factors for predicted over experimental EC50 values are determined from a calibration curve for non-selective narcosis. The unfavored S-(-)-enantiomers of etomidate and two analogues surprisingly still fulfill the Meyer-Overton rule. The R+-enantiomers of etomidate and four structural analogues are up to 34-fold more active than e

Fipronil: environmental fate, ecotoxicology, and human health concerns.

Fipronil is a highly effective, broad-spectrum insecticide with potential value for the control of a wide range of crop, public hygiene, amenity, and veterinary pests. It can generally be applied at low to very low dose rates to achieve effective pest control. Application rates vary between 0.6 and 200 g a.i./ha, depending on the target pest and formulation. It belongs to the phenyl pyrazole or fiprole group of chemicals and is a potent disrupter of the insect central nervous system via interference with the gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA-) regulated chloride channel. Fipronil degrades slowly o

The ecotoxicology of marine tributyltin (TBT) hotspots: A review.

Tributyltin (TBT) was widely used as a highly efficient biocide in antifouling paints for ship and boat hulls. Eventually, TBT containing paints became globally banned when TBT was found to cause widespread contamination and non-target adverse effects in sensitive species, with induced pseudohermaphroditism in female neogastropods (imposex) being the best-known example. In this review, we address the history and the status of knowledge regarding TBT pollution and marine TBT hotspots, with a special emphasis on the Norwegian coastline. The review also presents a brief update on knowledge of TBT

Ecotoxicological assessment of doxycycline in soil.

Doxycycline has been used in continually increasing quantities for mass treatment of food animals because of its greater bioavailability relative to older tetracyclines. The study presented in this paper was undertaken to investigate the degradation rate of the tetracycline derivative in manure-amended soil. In the present experiment, following composting, the doxycycline-contaminated manure was applied to agricultural land, and a field study was performed to investigate the degradation rate of doxycycline in soil. By the end of the 20-week sampling period, about 20 %, 33 % and 18 % of the ini

Twenty Years of Research in Ecosystem Functions in Aquatic Microbial Ecotoxicology.

One of the major threats to freshwater biodiversity is water pollution including excessive loads of nutrients, pesticides, industrial chemicals, and/or emerging contaminants. The widespread use of organic pesticides for agricultural and nonagricultural (industry, gardening, etc.) purposes has resulted in the presence of their residues in various environments, including surface waters. However, the contribution of pesticides to the deterioration of freshwater ecosystems (i.e., biodiversity decline and ecosystem functions impairment) remains uncertain. Once in the aquatic environment, pesticides

Shedding light on amphipod behaviour: Baseline locomotion behaviour for laboratory ecotoxicology experiments.

Behavioural endpoints offer a sensitive, non-invasive alternative to traditional mortality assays. Yet, they remain underutilized in regulatory frameworks due to a lack of standardised methodologies and baseline behavioural data. This study investigates the baseline locomotion of the marine amphipod Marinogammarus marinus to external light triggers to support standardised laboratory behavioural assays. Using an automated observation chamber, here we tracked swimming behaviour in response to light stimuli, quantifying locomotion as distance travelled. Groups of eight amphipods were tested in la

Ecotoxicological effects of lead in ducks and geese.

Lead (Pb) exposure remains a critical threat to waterfowl health and conservation. This review synthesizes findings from studies published between 2015 and 2025 on Pb toxicity in geese and ducks across North America, Europe, and Asia. Ingestion of spent ammunition and Pb-contaminated sediments were identified as the predominant exposure pathways. Species-specific susceptibility was evident, with diving ducks and some geese showing higher rates of Pb shot ingestion, although all waterfowl are at risk. Acute toxicity manifested as direct mortality, emaciation, neurological disorders, and organ n
