[Ectodermal dysplasia syndrome].

Ectodermal dysplasias (ED) are a heterogeneous group of disorders characterized by developmental dystrophies of ectodermal structures, such as hypohidrosis, hypotrichosis, onychodysplasia and hypodontia or anodontia. All forms of this heterogeneous group are genetically transmitted. Two genes are localized and identified, namely ectodermal dysplasia anhidrotic (EDA) and downless (DL). Currently the genes and gene products are defined, but the function of the proteins is not fully known. The location of the genes has enabled prenatal diagnosis and a more accurate identification of possible carr…

Odontomicronychial ectodermal dysplasia.

This paper describes odontomicronychial dysplasia, a pure ectodermal dysplasia of the 2-3 subgroup of group A. It is characterised by precocious eruption and shedding of deciduous dentition, precocious eruption of secondary dentition with short, rhomboid roots, and short, thin, slow growing nails. This condition probably results from an autosomal recessive gene.

Hypohidrotic ectodermal dysplasia.

Hypohidrotic ectodermal dysplasia was first described by Thurnam in 1848. It is a rare, X-linked, recessive disorder characterized by anhidrosis or hypohidrosis, hypotrichosis, dental hypoplasia and characteristic facial features. Herein, we report a typical case of hypohidrotic ectodermal dysplasia. A 20-year-old male presented with the above symptoms at birth. When a family history was taken, it was discovered that his uncle (mother's brother) had the same characteristic facial features and hypotrichosis.

[Anhidrotic ectodermal dysplasia].

The case of an hyperthermia-induced sudden death in an infant with anhidrotic dysplasia is reported. This disease, easily diagnosed, should now be better known and its early assessment, with thermal monitoring might improve the initial severe prognosis. A genetic counselling might be possible.

Anhidrotic ectodermal dysplasia.

A diagnosis of anhidrotic ectodermal dysplasia should be considered for patients with an undeveloped breast or other deformities. Recognition of the syndrome can lead to necessary and helpful genetic counseling and will ensure that other members of the family, who may also be affected by the syndrome, are under proper care.

Autosomal recessive ectodermal dysplasia.

Seven cases of a peculiar autosomal recessive ectodermal dysplasia as a distinct nosologic entity are presented. The main symptoms of this rare, not fully delineated syndrome, are hypohidrosis, xeroderma, hypotrichosis, dystrophy of the teeth, benign acanthosis nigricans, and furrowed tongue. Other symptoms can include mental retardation, nail dystrophy, disturbances of skin pigmentation (perioral and periorbital hyperpigmentation, vitiligo, and perinevic leukoderma), and palmoplantar keratosis.

Rapp-Hodgkin ectodermal dysplasia.

Rapp-Hodgkin syndrome is an uncommon, autosomal dominant condition characterized by distinctive craniofacial anomalies, cleft lip or palate, poor dentition, poor hair growth, dystrophic nails, and hypohidrosis, and hypospadias in boys. Since the original report in 1968, fewer than 20 other patients have been described. We report a new sporadic case, a 12-year-old boy who had erythrodermia and scaling skin at birth, and later developed most of the symptoms and findings previously described.
