Ectopia lentis.

Ectopia lentis was first described more than 200 years ago, but its value as a significant diagnostic clue to the presence of other ocular and systemic disorders has only recently been appreciated. Ectopia lentis may cause a marked reduction in visual acuity, which varies with the type and degree of dislocation and the presence of other ocular abnormalities. An approach to the diagnostic evaluation of the patient with ectopia lentis is outlined. The differential diagnosis is reviewed in detail both clinically and histologically. The complications of ectopia lentis and the appropriate managemen…

[Hereditary ectopia lentis].

If not due to trauma, ectopia lentis is usually caused genetically. It is a main symptom of several syndromal disorders such as Marfan syndrome or homocystinuria. Also other connective tissue disorders convey an elevated risk for ectopia lentis. Isolated ectopia lentis is frequently caused by genetic alterations as well, most commonly due to mutations in ADAMTSL4. Depending on the molecular basis, the consequences for the management of patients may differ significantly: On the one hand, possible accompanying symptoms may require a specific surveillance and treatment. Also, the risk for other f…

Familial unilateral ectopia lentis.

Ectopia lentis is almost always a bilateral condition, although it may be asymmetric in some cases of Marfan syndrome. Unilateral ectopia lentis has been associated with trauma and with intraocular tumors. We report two siblings with isolated unilateral ectopia lentis who had no evidence of underlying abnormality or of trauma.

Ectopia lentis et pupillae.

A rare case of congenital bilateral ectopia lentis et pupillae (ELEP) is reported in a 32 year old female presenting with complaints of diminution of vision in both eyes. Associations of optic nerve hypoplasia and myelinated nerve fibers are being reported for the first time in such a case. The aetiopathogenesis of ELEP is controversial. Combined neuroectodermal and mesodermal origin is being postulated for this syndrome on the basis of aforesaid abnormalities and presence of pupillary dilator muscle hypoplasia, "annular endotheliopathy", and persistent pupillary membrane in both eyes.

Ectopia lentis et pupillae.

Two brothers whose parents were second cousins had ectopia lentis et pupillae. This autosomal recessive disorder is distinguished from other disorders with ectopia lentis by the limitation of abnormalities to the bilateral displacement of lens and pupil.

Ectopia lentis et pupillae.

Two brothers had ectopia lentis et pupillae, an autosomal recessive disorder. Ascertainment of the brothers occurred through an unaffected sister, who sought genetic advice concerning possible risk for the disorder in her future children. Although the clinical features and the genetic aspects of ectopia lentis et pupillae are well documented in the older ophthalmologic literature, this entity has received relatively little attention recently in major reference texts.

Genetics of ectopia lentis.

Hereditary ectopia lentis or lens subluxation can occur with and without systemic associations. Significant overlap can be found in the genetic mutations and pathogenesis of subluxated lenses in their isolated forms as well as with associated syndromes. Gene mutations have been identified for lens subluxation associated with Marfan syndrome, Weill Marchesani syndrome, Ectopia Lentis simplex, Ectopia Lentis et pupillae, Ehlers Danlos syndrome, homocystinuria, and sulfite oxidase deficiency. Herein we describe the ocular and systemic characteristics found in patients with ectopia lentis, as well…
