lmmune thrombocytopenia is a benign, self-limiting disease in children, responding well to treatment and generally associated with viral infections. A 13-year-old girl was admitted to a hospital with the epistaxis and purpura after an attack of jaundice 6 weeks before. The diagnosis of hepatitis A virus (HAV)-induced thrombocytopenia was made. Furthermore, erythrophagocytosis by megakaryocytes was demonstrated in the bone marrow of the patient. Although hematologic complications following hepatitis B and C viruses are commonly reported, the association of hepatitis A virus and thrombocytopenia

Neutrophils are phenotypically heterogenous cells that mediate host defense and tissue homeostasis. Here, we identify emperipolesis - the evolutionarily conserved process by which neutrophils pass through megakaryocytes - as a phenotypically transformative route of egress from bone marrow. By intravital microscopy and 3-D histology, we show that the rapid form emperipolesis is markedly enhanced under inflammatory conditions. Neutrophils exit from megakaryocytes directly to the blood, acquiring exosomes enriched in proteins related to metabolism, migration, and immune function. This transfer in…

A 53-year-old man was admitted for tooth mobility. A mass was identified at the tooth base by CT. Histopathology of the excisional biopsy revealed a moderately differentiated squamous cell carcinoma. Many intact neutrophils were observed within the malignant cell cytoplasm. The patient underwent partial maxillectomy and bilateral neck dissection. Significant neutrophilic emperipolesis was detected in the resected material. Four tumor recurrences developed in the head and neck region during follow-up. Surgery and chemoradiotherapy was performed. The latest tumor recurrence occurred in the perip…

The term emperipolesis defines the temporary presence of one cell within another's cytoplasm. In clinical use, megakaryocyte emperipolesis is the penetration of hematopoietic cells into the cytoplasm of megakaryocytes. The pathophysiological significance of megakaryocyte emperipolesis is uncertain. It has been described in association with neoplastic disorders, and in a few instances in idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura, iron deficiency anemia, bleeding, and during the administration of recombinant human granulocyte colony-stimulating factor. However, megakaryocyte emperipolesis in a patient…

Megakaryocyte emperipolesis is a biological process in which a cell penetrates and exists as a viable intact cell within another. It is a recognized morphological feature of myeloproliferative neoplasms (MPNs), in which neutrophils can be seen within megakaryocytes in bone marrow smears and sections. We aimed to determine whether neutrophil contents, specifically protein and RNA, are deposited within megakaryocytes due to emperipolesis. Evaluation of hematoxylin and eosin-stained bone marrow showed that 84% of MPN patients (n = 163) had megakaryocyte emperipolesis, most notably in enlarged meg…

Although emperipolesis exists in infectious liver diseases, the diagnostic value of emperipolesis in chronic hepatitis B is not exactly known. The aim of this study is to evaluate the histological characteristics and laboratory parameters of emperipolesis in chronic hepatitis B. Totally 402 patients with hepatitis B and other liver diseases were processed in a retrospective assessment. Inflammatory severity of hepatitis B was evaluated with Ishak Scoring System. Immunofluorescent staining was performed for CD8 (T cells), CD20 (B cells), CD56 (NK cells), CD68 (macrophages) and MPO (neutrophils)…

Histiocytosis is an uncommon disease characterized by excessive accumulation of histiocytes. Here, we report a rare case of non-Langerhans-cell histiocytosis in a 51-year-old woman who presented with severe symptoms of pericardial effusion. Radiologic investigation also detected multiple bone (lower limbs, vertebrae, ribs, and ilium) lesions. Resected pericardium showed abundant mono- or multi-nucleated non-foamy histiocytes (CD68+/CD163+/S-100+/CD1α-/langerin-) in a fibroinflammatory background. The histiocytes demonstrated emperipolesis of lymphocytes, a hallmark feature of Rosai-Dorfman dis…

Emperipolesis of hematopoietic cells within the cytoplasm of the megakaryocytes was most often described in association with various pathologic conditions. The aim of the research was estimation of the incidence of emperipolesis in the bone marrow of the patients with non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL). 30 patients with different histological types of NHL (chronic lymphocytic leukaemia--CLL, hairy cell leukaemia--HCL, multiple myeloma--MM) in compliance with clinical stage of the disease, patient's age and sex were analyzed. Trephine biopsies of the bone marrow were carried out in fixative solution …

BACKGROUND: Imprint cytology of the thymus has not received much attention. Cytology of the thymus is important because the uninvolved thymus may be needled during aspiration procedures.
CASES: In two cases, during surgery for carcinoma of the thyroid, we received thymic tissue mistakenly sampled as a pretracheal lymph node for frozen section to rule out metastasis. Imprint smears were studied. The presence of thymocytes in the cytoplasm of thymic epithelial cells (emperipolesis) was the most significant feature in the imprints. However, it was not detected on histology.
CONCLUSION: Thymic e…

We found that this finding was common in the cerebral white matter of patients with Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD). Eight consecutive autopsy cases of sporadic CJD we…

The gray platelet syndrome (GPS) is a rare congenital platelet disorder characterized by mild to moderate bleeding diathesis, macrothrombocy … impaired in 2/2 patients. In 4/4 patients, the BM biopsy showed fibrosis (grade 2-3) and extensive emperipolesis, with many (36-65%) MKs containing 2-4 leukocytes engulfed within the cytoplasm. Reduced immunolabeling for platelet factor 4 together with normal immunolabeling for CD63 in MKs of two patients demonstrated that GPS MKs display an alpha granule-spec …
