BACKGROUND AND AIM OF THE WORK: There is evidence in adult literature that the enema in the preoperative of thoracic surgery can be dismissed without disadvantage. However, there is a gap of articles about enema in childhood for thoracic surgeries. A retained enema tube sheath was encountered in 4 outpatients who underwent preparation for barium enema. This object can be detected on a plain abdominal roentgenogram, but is more readily apparent as an intraluminal foreign body during barium enema examination. We suggest that a prominent warning to remove the sheath before taking a cleansing enema be attached to the enema tip.

In a prospective study, 443 patients referred for double-contrast barium enema examination were allocated to one of four regimens consisting of either 24 or 48 hours of clear liquids in combination with a cathartic laxative (magnesium sulfate), an irritant laxative (bisacodyl), and hydration. The effects of the 'tap-water enemas till clear' method of bowel cleansing on the technical quality of double-contrast enema (DCE) were studied in 123 outpatients referred for DCE. Patients with one or two tap-water enemas (1.75 litres) before the DCE had significantly more faecal residue and flocculation of contrast medium than patients with three or more enemas. However, the number of enemas did not correlate significantly with mucosal coating. The results suggest that at least three tap-water enemas should be given before DCE.
