PROBLEM RESEARCH STRATEGY AND FINDINGS: Environmental justice (EJ) seeks to correct legacies of disproportionately burdening low-income and Black, Indigenous, and people of color (BIPOC) communities with environmental hazards that contribute to health inequalities. Federal and state policies increasingly require plans to assess and incorporate EJ principles. The current lack of accessible data and plan evaluation on EJ has been a barrier to policy setting and benchmarking. We created a framework for analyzing content across a large corpus of plans by using quantitative text analysis on 461 Cal…

Vancouver's Downtown Eastside (DTES) has long been characterized as Canada's skid row within public narratives that raise concerns about communicable diseases, open drug use, survival sex work, and homelessness. This stigmatizing gaze has bolstered a deficit-oriented philosophy that emphasizes measures to mitigate these threats, ostensibly by erasing the moral and environmental depravity from the landscape. However, such measures threaten to further marginalize DTES residents by perpetuating public sentiments of fear and disgust toward the inner city. In this paper, we challenge this orientati

Environmental markets may influence environmental justice by disproportionately affecting economically disadvantaged or socially vulnerable communities. We investigate the impact of China's Certified Emission Reduction (CCER) program on air pollution in disadvantaged and non-disadvantaged counties from 2000 to 2019. We find that the CCER program effectively reduces carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions and fine particulate matter (PM2.5) concentrations. We further examine the distributional impacts and find that the program promotes environmental justice by reducing disparities in air quality between…

BACKGROUND: The Environmental Justice Index is a tool released by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention that quantifies and ranks the environmental burden and social vulnerability of each census tract. Racial and ethnic disparities in adverse pregnancy outcomes are well established. The relative contributions of individual (person-level) and environmental (neighborhood-level) risk factors to disease prevalence remain poorly understood.
OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to determine whether the Environmental Justice Index is associated with adverse pregnancy outcomes after adjustment for in…

Traffic-related air and noise pollution continues to pose significant health threats to the urban population. This study develops a transferable methodology to estimate key health co-benefits of electric mobility at a city scale. It is the first study to consider electrifying both passenger and goods vehicles. Using city-wide data, we adopt a bottom-up approach based on empirical traffic volume, vehicle mix and speed on the road network. Under four scenarios of different vehicle types, noise propagation and air dispersion models are used to estimate reductions of noise level and five roadside

Environmental injustice is frequently understood as the uneven distribution of environmental harms, to which low-income and racialized communities are far more frequently exposed. Alternatively, this paper explores environmental injustice through an uneven politics of environmental reproduction. I argue that environmental injustice can occur via the disproportionate burden low-income racialized communities bear for reproducing environmental quality. To expand on this understanding, I offer both a theoretical framework that centres the socioecological reproduction of racial capitalism, as well

Objective The metropolitan region in Santiago, Chile has an air quality problem. However, the larger issue may lie in the inequities created … groups in the metropolitan region. Chilean policymakers have the regulatory tools needed to improve environmental justice. However, they need to improve the implementation of these tools in order to achieve that goal: Chilean policy makers should consider local sources of air pollution in the most polluted municipalities; Government decision makers should make extra ef …

PURPOSE: Minority communities often bear the burden of "hosting" pollution sources. This report assesses whether there are any health effects from living near such pollution sources and whether health effects of pollution vary by sex, ethnicity, or income.
METHODS: The air pollution emissions from Hartford area, point sources are modeled and exposures are estimated for the residents who participated in a geographically-based health survey. The pollution intensities and other individual and neighborhood characteristics are used to predict an individual's reported respiratory problems.

Climate change is a public health crisis that disproportionately harms marginalized, frontline, and fenceline communities, deepening long-standing health inequities. This article examines nursing's critical role in advancing climate and environmental justice, drawing on the profession's history, ethical mandate, and trusted position in society. Using the Social-Ecological Model, it illustrates how nurses can advocate for equitable, climate-informed care across individual, interpersonal, community, organizational, and policy levels. The article argues that integrating climate justice into nursi…

INTRODUCTION: Resource extraction poses a substantial environmental justice problem globally. Community-based efforts to increase environmental health literacy have been linked with reducing exposure and increasing positive health outcomes. However, there is a gap in community-based environmental justice work centering around the education and needs of youth in rural communities.
METHODS: Using frameworks of environmental health literacy, an Ecological Model of Health, and Funds of Knowledge, we facilitated the ongoing STEAM in Action project, where we hosted two community-based youth environ…

Environmental justice efforts in the United States seek to provide equal protection from environmental hazards, such as air pollution, to all groups, particularly among traditionally disadvantaged populations. To accomplish this objective, the U.S. EPA has previously required states to use an environmental justice screening tool as part of air quality planning decision-making. The generally utilized approach to assess potential areas of environmental justice concern relies on static comparisons of environmental and demographic information to identify areas where minority and low income populat…

Nuclear hazards, linked to both U.S. weapons programs and civilian nuclear power, pose substantial environment justice issues. Nuclear power plant (NPP) reactors produce low-level ionizing radiation, high level nuclear waste, and are subject to catastrophic contamination events. Justice concerns include plant locations and the large potentially exposed populations, as well as issues in siting, nuclear safety, and barriers to public participation. Other justice issues relate to extensive contamination in the U.S. nuclear weapons complex, and the mining and processing industries that have suppor

Existing environmental policies aim to reduce emissions but lack standards for addressing environmental justice. Environmental justice research documents disparities in exposure to air pollution; however, little guidance currently exists on how to make improvements or on how specific emission-reduction scenarios would improve or deteriorate environmental justice conditions. Here, we quantify how emission reductions from specific sources would change various measures of environmental equality and justice. We evaluate potential emission reductions for fine diesel particulate matter (DPM) in Sout…

Recent research, focused mostly on the United States and Western Europe, shows that marginalized communities often face greater environmenta … ir changes over time. Although average exposure levels remained stable during our study period, the environmental justice (EJ) landscape in Colombia contemporaneously underwent a complete transformation. In 2010, lighter-skinned individuals faced higher PM2.5 exposure, but darker-skinned individuals experienced steeper increases in the following years. By 2016, the EJ …

Nowadays, air pollution has emerged as a critical global health and environmental justice issue, with a stark contrast in exposure and management between high-, middle-, and low-income countries. This study synthesizes satellite-derived data with Global Burden of Disease insights, examining the spatiotemporal trends of PM2.5 and O3 exposures and their health impacts from 1998 to 2019. Despite a reversal in the global upward trend of PM2.5 exposure post-2011, O3 levels persist, highlighting a geographical disparity in health benefits due to air quality policies. The study reveals that while a r…

BACKGROUND: Place-based vulnerability may contribute to wound morbidity after ventral hernia repair (VHR), but the relevance of multidomain Environmental Justice Index (EJI) rankings is uncertain. We evaluated associations between overall and module-specific EJI rankings and 30-day wound outcomes.
STUDY DESIGN: This retrospective cohort study included 35,626 patients undergoing clean VHR with hernia width ≤18 cm in the Abdominal Core Health Quality Collaborative. Parastomal hernias and repairs involving anterior component separation were excluded. Overall EJI and social, environmental, health…

Despite the democratization of South Africa in 1994, which brought the agricultural sector within the ambit of legal protection, farm workers remain vulnerable to an undue burden of social and health problems. Alcohol abuse due to the DOP system, pesticide poisonings, and other occupational hazards illustrate that the likely success of efforts at redress depends on a greater awareness of the rights and justice dimensions of the health problems facing these workers. International trade policies may exacerbate inequalities that deprive them of opportunities to realize their rights at national le
