Environmental pollutants and allergic rhinitis.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: To review the current knowledge of the pathophysiology, epidemiology, and management of environmental pollutants and allergic rhinitis. RECENT FINDINGS: Both active cigarette smoking and passive exposure to cigarette smoke are associated with chronic rhinitis and sinusitis. Matrix metalloproteinase 9, which is thought to contribute to the pathophysiology of allergy, is elevated in children with passive cigarette smoke exposure compared with controls. Ground-level ozone and particulate matter exposure is associated with an allergic-type response and may increase sensitizatio…

[Endocrine effects of environmental pollutants].

There is an increasing scientific concern that organochlorine compounds, recognized as environmental act through their estrogenic or anti-estrogenic properties. Many endocrine diseases can be concerned by the pathogenic role on environmental residues in their promotion. The carcinogenic potential of environmental xenoestrogens on breast cancer is a matter of controversy. In Europe, despite their prohibition since the 70's, residues persist in soil and rivers, resulting in a widespread contamination of the general population. Our results suggest that environmental exposure to p,p' -DDE, HCB or

Environmental factors and atmospheric pollutants.

Respiratory infections result from complex interactions between the infectious organism and the host, and exposure to environmental pollutants may alter host resistance. The atmospheric pollutants implicated in respiratory infections include acidic aerosols, particles, nitrogen dioxide, ozone, sulfur dioxide, and household allergens. An extensive epidemiological literature has been established linking environmental tobacco smoke to increased occurrence of lower respiratory tract infections in children; exposure to smoke from cooking and heating fires may also increase the risk of serious infec…

Bone Disruption and Environmental Pollutants.

BACKGROUND: Endocrine Disrupting Chemicals (EDCs) are ubiquitous and may significantly contribute to environmental pollution and contamination in humans and wildlife. Ecological pollutants could interfere with bone homeostasis through different mechanisms, including hormonal imbalance, direct osteoblast toxicity, and enhancement of osteoclasts activity, leading to either osteopenia or osteoporosis. Among these chemicals, bisphenols, dioxins, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, polychlorobiphenyls, poly- and perfluoroalkyl, phthalates, parabens, organotins, and cadmium may play a role in the bone

Environmental pollutants and the thyroid.

Common environmental exposures may affect thyroid function in humans. Foetuses and infants are most vulnerable to these effects because they need thyroid hormone for normal neurodevelopment. Perchlorate, thiocyanate and nitrate are all competitive inhibitors of the sodium/iodine symporter (NIS) in pharmacologic doses, but their effects on human thyroid function at environmental exposure levels remain unclear. Many compounds, including polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), polybrominated diphenylethers (PBDEs), bisphenol-A (BPA) and triclosan, may have direct actions on the thyroid hormone receptor

Oxidative stress from environmental pollutants.

Recently progress has been made on O2 toxicity and pathology related to numerous environmental contaminants in insects. The pro-oxidants studied included: dioxin, paraquat, and an assorted array of quinones, 8-methoxypsorlen, arsenic, and mercury. The responses to these oxidants are diverse, but they arise from the reactive oxygen species. These pro-oxidants in insects cause lipid peroxidation, protein and enzyme oxidation, and GSH depletion. Potentially, they may also cause DNA oxidation, and form DNA adducts. Oxidative challenge is alleviated by antioxidant compounds, but more importantly by

Cyanobacterial blooms, iron, and environmental pollutants.

Iron determines the abundance and diversity of life and controls primary production in numerous aqueous environments. Over the past decades, … dominate the microbial population in a bloom. Aquatic resources are damaged by a diverse number of environmental pollutants that can further decrease metal availability and result in a functional deficiency of available iron. Pollutants can also increase iron demand. A pollutant-exposed microbe is compelled to acquire further metal critical to its survival. Even in pollu …

Electroreductive Remediation of Halogenated Environmental Pollutants.

Electrochemical reduction of halogenated organic compounds is gaining increasing attention as a strategy for the remediation of environmental pollutants. We begin this review by discussing key components (cells, electrodes, solvents, and electrolytes) in the design of a procedure for degrading a targeted pollutant, and we describe and contrast some experimental techniques used to explore and characterize the electrochemical behavior of that pollutant. Then, we describe how to probe various mechanistic features of the pertinent electrochemistry (including stepwise versus concerted carbon-haloge…

Biodegradation of toxic and environmental pollutants.

Organic chemicals that are toxic to humans and to the environment can be transformed and metabolized by a variety of microorganisms. Such chemicals include trichloroethylene, chloroform, carbon tetrachloride, toluene, phenols, chlorinated phenols, polychlorinated biphenyls and polyaromatic hydrocarbons. This review focuses on some of the most important recent developments in the biodegradation of these toxic chemicals. Depending on the compound and the organism, the extent of our understanding ranges from the molecular level to the conceptual.

Effects of Environmental Pollutants on Tryptophan Metabolism.

Tryptophan (Trp) is an important essential amino acid that plays a variety of physiological functions in the human body, including being a precursor of neurotransmitter and participating in immune regulation. Currently, more and more studies show that some pollutants in the environment can affect the metabolism of Trp and consequently affect human health. The present paper offers a comprehensive overview of prior research investigating the impact of environmental pollutants, including inorganic and organic contaminants, microplastics, and nanoplastics on the nervous system, immune system, dige…

Environmental pollutants and stroke-related hospital admissions.

Some effects of environmental pollution on human health are known, especially those affecting the respiratory and cardiovascular systems. The current study aimed to estimate these effects on the production of hospital admissions for stroke. This was an ecological study using hospital admissions data in São José dos Campos, São Paulo State, Brazil, with diagnosis of stroke, from January 1, 2007, to April 30, 2008. The target pollutants were particulate matter, sulfur dioxide, and ozone. Use of a Poisson linear regression model showed that same-day exposure to particulate matter was associated w

[Environmental pollutants in maternal milk and cryptorchidism].

OBJECTIVE: Numerous maternal lipophilic compounds are eliminated into milk during lactation, their concentrations reflecting fetal in utero exposure. Some of them are endocrine disruptors. Their role in the occurrence of genital malformation, dysfunction or cancer has been suggested. We wanted to study the exposure of our population and its potential association with cryptorchidism, as few clinical studies are available. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Over three years, we screened for cryptorchidism all boys born alive at or above 34 weeks of gestational age, in two maternity wards (CHU Nice, CHG Gras

Vitamin A homeostasis endangered by environmental pollutants.

Normal vitamin A function depends on adequate stores of the vitamin, a finely regulated supply of the vitamin to target tissues, and an ability of cells to generate functionally active forms of the vitamin. Both endogenous and exogenous factors can adversely affect vitamin A homeostasis. Polyhalogenated aromatic hydrocarbons are ubiquitous environmental pollutants and cause severe disturbances in vitamin A metabolism, manifested by an accelerated metabolism and breakdown of vitamin A and its metabolites and a depletion of vitamin A from the body; this sequence of events accounts for the vitami…
