[Epidemiology of and preventive measures for multiresistant pathogens].

Multidrug-resistant organisms (MROs) are increasing all over the world. The most important MROs are methicillin-resistant S. aureus, followed by vancomycin-resistant enterococci and extended-spectrum beta-lactamase (ESBL)-producing bacteria. The latter are not yet of much importance in ophthalmology. MROs can cause serious infections and must be considered in empiric therapy of nosocomial infections. To prevent further spread, standard and contact precautions have to be followed, and antibiotic stewardship needs to be introduced.

Camelpox: epidemiology, diagnosis and control measures.

Camelpox is an economically important contagious skin disease of camelids caused by camelpox virus (CMLV) and is characterized by mild local skin infection and less common severe systemic infections. The disease is confined to camel-rearing belts particularly in developing countries and causes economic impact due to considerable loss in terms of morbidity, mortality, loss of weight and reduction in milk yield. The virus has gained attention from researchers due to its recent emergence with close genetic relatedness to variola virus, the causative agent of smallpox, and carrying genes responsib

Epidemiological use of rectal proliferation measures.

Measures of rectal mucosal proliferation have been developed and used in research clinical settings, but their utility for larger-scale epidemiological studies remains uncertain. We assessed the suitability of bromodeoxyuridine (BrdUrd) and proliferating cell nuclear antigen (PCNA)-labeling indices (LIs) in the setting of a multicenter clinical trial of adenoma recurrence. Subjects at participating practices were asked to permit biopsy of normal rectal mucosa during a colonoscopy scheduled for other reasons. PCNA and BrdUrd labeling was performed, and corresponding LIs were computed. In genera

Occupational Histoplasmosis: Epidemiology and Prevention Measures.

In areas where Histoplasma is endemic in the environment, occupations involving activities exposing workers to soil that contains bird or bat droppings may pose a risk for histoplasmosis. Occupational exposures are frequently implicated in histoplasmosis outbreaks. In this paper, we review the literature on occupationally acquired histoplasmosis. We describe the epidemiology, occupational risk factors, and prevention measures according to the hierarchy of controls.

Differences of blood pressure estimates between consecutive measurements on one occasion: implications for inter-study comparability of epidemiologic studies.

Currently, substantial variation in epidemiologic studies exists regarding the number of blood pressure (BP) readings obtained and the way in which they are combined. This might result in systematically different BP estimates. We therefore analysed data from 25,891 subjects (10,124 men and 15,767 women) of the EPIC-Potsdam Study (European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition) to estimate the magnitude of differences between consecutive BP readings and their combinations. Three measurements with 2 min intervals were performed in the sitting position on the right arm with the supp

Results of the epidemiological measurement of endemics, epidemics, and pandemics.

Reliable characterization of infection dynamics is critical for managing endemic, epidemic, and pandemic outbreaks. A persistent challenge in epidemiology is the lack of a unified quantitative framework that allows wave patterns to be compared across outbreak scales and pathogens while accounting for possible ambiguities in wave definitions. This study presents a descriptive epidemiological framework to quantify epidemic wave characteristics using the Duty Cycle (DC), defined as the ratio between wave duration and the time to the next peak. Historical time-series data from viral outbreaks were

The changing epidemiology of monkeypox and preventive measures: an update.

Monkeypox is a systemic exanthematous viral disease presenting with fever, lymphadenopathy, and vesicular rash. The zoonotic virus causing this disease is endemic to many sub-Saharan African countries, where a steady rise in cases has been witnessed for the past 30 years. However, monkeypox re-emerged as the largest outbreak of the West African clade (clade II) of monkeypox virus in Nigeria in 2017. This poxvirus received only minimal global attention until recently, when cases emerged in Europe and rapidly spread globally in certain sections of the community, such as men having sex with men o

Methods and measures for the description of epidemiologic contact networks.

This article describes new methods to characterize epidemiologic contact networks that involve links that are being dynamically formed and dissolved. The new social network measures are designed with an epidemiologic interpretation in mind. These methods are intended to capture dynamic aspects of networks related to their potential to spread infection. This differs from many social network measures that are based on static networks. The networks are formulated as transmission graphs (TGs), in which nodes represent relationships between two individuals and directed edges (links) represent the p

The History of Rabies in Trinidad: Epidemiology and Control Measures.

Vampire bat-transmitted rabies was first recognized in Trinidad during a major outbreak reported in 1925. Trinidad is the only Caribbean island with vampire bat-transmitted rabies. We conducted a literature review to describe the changing epidemiology of rabies in Trinidad and give a historical perspective to rabies prevention and control measures on the island. The last human case of rabies occurred in 1937 and although no case of canine-transmitted rabies was reported since 1914, sporadic outbreaks of bat-transmitted rabies still occur in livestock to date. Over the last century, seven notab

Lymphatic filariasis in India: epidemiology and control measures.

Lymphatic filariasis caused by Wuchereria bancrofti and Brugia malayi is an important public health problem in India. Both parasites produce essentially similar clinical presentations in man, related mainly to the pathology of the lymphatic system. Filariasis is endemic in 17 States and six Union Territories, with about 553 million people at risk of infection. The Government of India has accorded a high priority for elimination of this infection through mass chemotherapy programme (annual, single dose of Diethylcarbamazine citrate, i.e. DEC - 6 mg/kg of bodyweight, plus Albendazole repeated fo

Overview of Zika infection, epidemiology, transmission and control measures.

The current Zika virus outbreak in the Americas and the proposed link to increases in microcephaly and neurological disorders have prompted the World Health Organization to declare a Public Health Emergency of International Concern on February 1, 2016. The virus is transmitted by Aedes mosquitoes and potentially by transfusion, perinatal and sexual transmission. The potential for spread into countries where Aedes mosquitoes are endemic is high. Previously, cases tended to be sporadic and associated with mild, non-specific symptoms. Prior outbreaks occurred in Yap Island in Micronesia in 2007,

Table saw injuries: epidemiology and a proposal for preventive measures.

BACKGROUND: Table saws are ubiquitous devices in professional, home, and school woodshops that have the potential to cause severe injuries. Many of these injuries results in finger and thumb tendon, nerve, and vascular damage or amputation. Long-term outcomes of these injuries can include functional and sensory deficits. Table saw manufacturers are required to equip saws with blade guards to prevent blade contact; nevertheless, treatment of table saw injuries is a common occurrence in U.S. emergency departments. METHODS: The authors performed a literature search using PubMed and the Cumulativ

[Epidemiological situation of measles in Japan and measures for its control].

In 2007, measles outbreak occurred mainly among teen/twenties in Japan, and many high-school, universities and colleges were closed to reduce spread of measles. Some high school students became measles when they were in foreign countries where measles has been eliminated, visited as school excursion. Since introducing measles vaccine as routine immunization, number of measles has been reduced remarkably in Japan. However, we had measles outbreak in 2001, and total annual patients number were estimated 200-300 thausands mainly among young infants. The main reason was low immunization coverage o

Validity of echocardiographic measurement in an epidemiological study. Project HeartBeat!

In Project HeartBeat!, a longitudinal study of cardiovascular disease risk factors in healthy children and adolescents, 3 samples of 40, 80, and 182 echocardiograms, respectively, were randomly selected and reread to evaluate intraobserver and interobserver variabilities and comparability between measurements of field echocardiographic technicians and reference readings at Texas Children's Hospital. Included in the evaluation were 8 M-mode echocardiographic measurements, ie, aortic root diameter, left atrial diameter, and end-diastolic and end-systolic measurements of interventricular septal t

Epidemiological measures of participation in community health promotion projects.

BACKGROUND: The paper is concerned with the use of epidemiological methods to measure the rates at which different strata of a defined population participate in community health promotion projects. The specific aim was to estimate the incidence rates of participation in projects sponsored by the Western Australian Health Promotion Foundation (Healthway), separately for sociodemographic and health-related behavioural subgroups. METHODS: Data were drawn from Healthway sponsorship projects in 1992. Each sport, arts and racing project was associated with promotion of a health message and creation
