Complications of frontal and ethmoid sinusitis.

A small percentage of patients with acute frontal or ethmoid sinusitis develop orbital, cranial or CNS complications. At selected University of Tennessee affiliated hospitals, from 1974 to 1978, there were 14 such cases which required major surgical intervention in addition to intensive medical therapy. The most common complication in this series was subperiosteal orbital abscess. The most common bacterial isolates were streptococcus and staphylococcus. A discussion of complications associated with frontal and ethmoid sinusitis is included as well as recommendations for medical and surgical ma…

Computed tomography of the ethmoid sinuses.

CT scanning of the ethmoid sinuses is a significant advancement in the diagnostic evaluation of patients with pathology in this region. It allows for simultaneous and accurate evaluation of fine bony detail as well as subtle soft tissue abnormalities.

[Spontaneous ethmoid pneumocele in chronic maxillary and ethmoid sinusitis and polyposis (author's transl)].

A 47 year old man with asthma, allergic rhinitis, and chronic maxillary and ethmoid sinusitis and polyposis, in whom for 2 years intraorbital pressure symptoms are experienced on nose-blowing, sneezing and coughing, is presented. Paranasal sinus X-rays demonstrated an intraorbital pneumocoele that increased in size with Valsalva manoeuvre. The diagnosis, pathology and treatment of intraorbital emphysema and pneumoceles are discussed.

Evaluation of the microbiology of chronic ethmoid sinusitis.

In a prospective study, patients with the diagnosis of chronic ethmoid sinusitis were evaluated microbiologically by using biopsy specimens of the ethmoid sinus mucosa. Microbiology cultures were performed on 94 specimens from 59 patients. Staphylococcus aureus and members of the family Enterobacteriaceae were the most frequent classical pathogenic bacteria isolated. Coagulase-negative staphylococci were the most common overall isolates. Streptococcus pneumoniae and Haemophilus influenzae were infrequent isolates. No anaerobes, viruses, or Chlamydia trachomatis organisms were identified. Resul…

Basal cell adenocarcinoma of the ethmoid sinuses.

Basal cell adenocarcinoma is a rare and relatively recently characterised malignant salivary gland tumour. It accounts for 5 per cent of parotid gland tumours and 1 per cent of salivary gland malignancies. It is very rarely documented in anatomical sites other than the major salivary glands. Basal cell adenocarcinoma has only been described once before in the ethmoid sinus. We report a case of basal cell adenocarcinoma in the ethmoid sinus, extending into the right orbit and anterior cranial fossa. We describe the clinical aspects of the patient's management and detail the histopathological fe

[Giant osteoma of the ethmoid and frontal sinuses].

The authors present a case of a huge osteoma of the ethmoid and frontal sinuses. An operative technique enabling radical removal without fragmentation of the tumor with preservation of the bony margins of the fronto-orbital region was presented.
