Facial loss injuries.

Facial loss injuries present a significant surgical challenge, often requiring not only the expertise of a plastic surgery specialist but also interdisciplinary collaboration. Special attention is given to acral structures, such as the nose, lips, and auricles. This article details each step in the reconstruction of these areas, including the use of flap plastics and microsurgical techniques. Emphasis is placed on the specifics of treating animal-induced injuries, with an overview of infection prevention and treatment strategies. The article also includes a list of replantation centers in the

Athletic facial injuries.

Most facial injuries that occur during athletic activities are of a minor nature, consisting of lacerations, contusions, and abrasions. These are usually treated by a team physician or an emergency department physician. However, minor injuries must be differentiated from the more significant injuries, especially those involving facial bone fractures. Significant facial trauma must be diagnosed accurately and treated with precision to avoid permanent facial deformity. Soft-tissue trauma as well as fractures are included in this review, and evaluation of the injured athlete is emphasized. A syst

[Epidemiology of facial injuries].

Epidemiological studies of maxillofacial trauma are numerous in the literature, but as a general rule their results are applicable to the investigated cohort only. Nevertheless, major differences in pattern of maxillofacial fractures have been reported between these studies. The longitudinal Nijmegen study (period 1960-1987) describes changes in the pattern of maxillofacial fractures for the Dutch situation. Traffic accidents still are the major cause of maxillofacial trauma, but the contribution of violent crimes and sports is rising. In addition, alcohol abuse as a factor in maxillofacial tr

Management of facial injuries.

Because of the excellent blood supply to the head region, superficial lacerations to the soft tissue structures of the head generally heal rapidly without treatment. Lacerations of the equine tongue frequently go unnoticed because difficulty in eating usually is not apparent. The majority of lacerations heal if left untreated, with no loss in function. Surgical repair is indicated to promote healing and prevent deformity, to amputate a severely compromised apex, and to alter a scar or defect that is unacceptable to the owner. Surgical principles to be adhered to include thorough debridement an

[Treatment of traumatic facial injuries].

Correct treatment of traumatic facial lacerations is essential to achieve the best cosmetic and functional outcome. This article discusses wound management, anatomy and techniques to repair lacerations of scalp, eyelid, nose, lip and ear. Scalp lacerations should be sutured in layers. Injury to the eyelid mandates a careful examination of the eye. Accurate adaptation of the lid margin is required. Nasal septum haematoma must be drained and the nares and alar margins aligned. The key to proper repair of lip laceration is alignment of the vermillion border. Injury to the ear can often be closed

Epidemiology of facial fracture injuries.

PURPOSE: Injuries resulting from accidents are a leading cause of mortality and morbidity. The objective of this study was to present epidemiologic estimates of hospital-based emergency department (ED) visits for facial fractures in the United States. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The Nationwide Emergency Department Sample for 2007 was used. All ED visits with facial fractures were selected. Demographic characteristics of these ED visits, causes of injuries, presence of concomitant injuries, and resource use in hospitals were examined. All estimates were projected to national levels and each ED visi

Management of traumatic facial injuries.

Whether minor or major, traumatic injuries to the maxillofacial area have far-reaching physical and emotional effects. Because the dentition dictates facial form and function, the oral and maxillofacial surgeon, a dental specialist with a minimum of four years of hospital-based surgical training, is uniquely qualified to manage these injuries. At times, the expertise of the general dentist and other dental specialists may be needed to provide definitive care. Several cases are provided to illustrate management of facial trauma.

Management of windshield facial injuries.

Between Jan. 1986 and Dec. 1990, 99 patients with automobile windshield facial injuries were hospitalized in Kaohsiung Medical College hospital. All patients were injured by old type windshields in car accidents. Seventy-three patients (74%) were male and twenty-six (26%) were female. Ages ranged from 6 to 62 years (mean age 31 years). Fifty-seven patients (58%) were car drivers and forty-two (42%) were front seat passengers. All patients had typical multiple U-shaped lacerations on the face. The major injury sites were localized to the upper one third of the face. The wounds were repaired imm

Facial injuries in automobile crashes.

In automobile accidents, the facial area is the most frequently injured body region in passenger car occupants. Laboratory studies have indicated that the tolerance of facial bones to impact is relatively low. Most of these facial injuries are rated as minor. The windshield, steering wheel, and instrument panel are the major points of contact. Restraints, lap belts, and lap-shoulder belts reduce the frequency of facial injuries at all levels of severity and also reduce the more severe and serious injuries to other body regions.

Sideline management of facial injuries.

Physicians who cover sporting events frequently encounter facial injuries. These injuries include contusions, hematomas, abrasions, lacerations, ruptured tympanic membranes, and fractures. For most physicians covering events, the diagnoses and decisions on returning athletes to play must be made without many of the diagnostic tools available in the office, such as radiographs, nasopharyngoscopes, or CT scans. As a result, physicians must rely on focused histories and thorough physical examinations to make their diagnoses and ultimately determine if injured participants can continue in their re

Facial injuries in hockey players.

As otolaryngologists become more involved with maxillofacial trauma, we are encountering an increasing number of athletic injuries. Ice hockey accounts for a large number of these facial injuries. The fast moving and random nature of the game, frequent body and equipment contact and lack of protective devices, predisposes the hockey player to facial injury. Because of the roughly tenfold increase in hockey participation over the last decade, the problem of facial injury prevention has become a significant public health problem in North America. Review of the medical literature shows a paucity

[Ocular injuries in mild facial trauma].

Ocular contusions are common and cause significant morbidity. The mechanism of ocular contusion is a decrease in the length of the anterioposterior axis whereas the transversal axis increases. Epidemiology data shows that young men are most injured in relation with sports, aggression, work, or car or work accidents. Injury to the ocular surface (conjunctiva and cornea) is minor. The iris is very frail, usually leading to hyphema which can progress to glaucoma. A cataract can appear after a contusion but usually years after the trauma. Final visual acuity can be compromised by retinal contusion

[Reconstructive surgery of facial nerve injuries].

The facial nerve is main motor nerve of the face and its injury leads to total ipsilateral paralysis. There are several surgical procedures in reconstruction of the facial nerve, and the most frequent one is hypoglosso-facial anastomosis. In this study were analysed a series of 69 patients operated on Institute of neurosurgery from 1981 to 2000 year. The most frequent cause of injury was the operation of cerebellopontine angle tumors, as well as the skull base fractures. Hypoglosso-facial anastomosis was done in 57 patients, in 5 cases we performed nerve grafting in the cerebellopontine angle,
