Characteristics of familial and non-familial melanoma in Australia.

Between 6 and 14% of malignant melanomas have been reported to occur in a familial pattern. In this study 785 melanoma patients from the Victorian Melanoma Service and the private practice of a dermatologist were assessed for the total number of melanocytic naevi, the number of dysplastic naevi and other clinical characteristics categorized according to whether there was a family history of melanoma. It was found that the presence of 100 or more naevi, six or more dysplastic naevi and blue eyes in a patient with melanoma were significantly associated with a family history of melanoma. Patients

Family characteristics of children with dyslexia.

Few studies have been devoted to the family characteristics of children with dyslexia. The findings from the studies available are often contradictory with regard to father's socioeconomic status, parents' age, sibship size, and birth order. Mother's socioeconomic status has attracted little attention. The present study was based on a retrospective review of 249 children with severe dyslexia. The major findings were the low occupational status and educational level of parents and the predominance of high-ranking children in large sibships. However, parental age was not found to be an important…

Family characteristics of deficit and nondeficit schizophrenia in the Roscommon Family Study.

Studies of course, treatment response, biological correlates, and environmental risk factors have suggested that the deficit syndrome of schizophrenia defines a meaningful subgroup within schizophrenia. Probands from the Roscommon Family Study who met criteria for schizophrenia or simple schizophrenia were categorized into deficit (N=22) and nondeficit (N=111). Within schizophrenia, the lifetime prevalence of the deficit syndrome was 16.5%; the percentage of males was 91% compared to 63% in the nondeficit group. The first-degree relatives of deficit probands had a significantly greater social

Clinical characteristics of familial and non-familial bipolar disorder.

OBJECTIVE: To explore the clinical characteristics of familial and non-familial bipolar disorder. METHOD: Twenty subjects with bipolar disorder, who also had a family history of bipolar disorder in a first degree relative, were matched for current age, age of first onset of bipolar disorder and gender with 20 subjects with bipolar disorder who had no family history of any psychiatric disorders in first or second degree relatives. RESULTS: Fourteen subjects in each group were female. The mean age at interview was 45.2 years and the mean age at first admission was 26 years. Although familial a

Characteristics of dyslexia in a Dutch family.

This study investigates the characteristics of 19 members of a Dutch family. Nine of them, recognized as dyslexic in their early years, are compared with six non-dyslexic members, whereas four form a non-classified category. From their personal histories, it is clear that the dyslexics had a long and troublesome educational career, while the non-dyslexics did not. However, probably because the dyslexic members had considerable intellectual resources and talents in mathematics and technical skills, most succeeded in getting degrees of a reasonably high standard and jobs that more or less matche

Clinical characteristics of familial schizophrenia.

INTRODUCTION: A family history of psychiatric disorders is one of the strongest risk factors for schizophrenia. The characteristics of patients with a family history of psychiatric disorders have not been systematically evaluated. METHODS: This multicenter study (26 centers, 2425 cases) was performed in a Chinese population to examine the sociodemographic and clinical characteristics of schizophrenia patients with a family history of psychotic disorders in comparison with those of patients with sporadic schizophrenia. RESULTS: Nineteen percent of patients had a family history of mental disea

[Family background characteristics in slowly-progressive schizophrenia].

The authors studied the family history of 103 patients with slowly progressive schizophrenia (1218 relatives) characterized by the predominance of obsessions and hysterical disturbances. The study disclosed the accumulation of both various forms of schizophrenia and personality anomalies of psychoasthenic and hysterical types among the relatives of the patients. The clinical specific features of "linear" symptomatology in the families studied were considered. The role of one or another type of constitutional predisposition in the development of phenotypical variants of the disease is shown.

Family history and schizophrenia: characteristics of groups with and without positive family histories.

Social and demographic characteristics were examined retrospectively in a sample of 475 hospitalized schizophrenics to test the hypothesis that they can be meaningfully distinguished by the presence or absence of psychiatric disorders in their relatives. Cases with a positive family history of psychiatric disorders (FHP cases) were significantly more likely to have been born in the United Kingdom and to have had older mothers. Those who had relatives with psychiatric disorders other than schizophrenia were significantly more likely to have been diagnosed as schizo-affective. The findings are t

Income, family characteristics, and physical violence toward children.

OBJECTIVE: This paper discusses the ways in which existing microeconomic theories of partner abuse, intra-family bargaining, and distribution of resources within families may contribute to our current understanding of physical child abuse. The empirical implications of this discussion are then tested on data from the 1985 National Family Violence Survey (NFVS) in order to estimate the effects of income, family characteristics, and state characteristics on physical violence toward children. METHODOLOGY: The sample consists of 2,760 families with children from the NFVS. Probit and ordered probi…

Family correlates of bulimic characteristics in college females.

This article provides a short review of the literature that relates family characteristics to anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa. In addition, a quantitative analysis of the relationship between family variables and level of eating disturbance was performed on self-reported responses of 175 normal weight females in an attempt to verify an expansion of the continuum hypothesis outlined by Kagan and Squires (1985). Consistent with the continuum hypothesis, moderate relationships were found between level of family dysfunction and bulimic symptomatology. Among several family variables, inconsist…

Family characteristics of autistic children: a further report.

The personality features of parents of a group of 21 well-functioning autistic children have been described previously. The main characteristics of these parents were social gaucheness and a tendency towards the single-minded pursuit of special, often intellectual, interests. We now present the agreement between research interviewers and clinician in the diagnosis of these parents as schizoid, together with clinical details of those parents rated by both as having definite schizoid traits. The educational functioning of the siblings of the autistic children compared with that of siblings of a

The clinical characteristics of familial cluster headache.

BACKGROUND: A positive family history predisposes to the development of cluster headache. The distinct characteristics of familial cluster headache have yet to be confirmed, however, evidence suggests a younger age of onset and higher proportion of females in this subgroup. OBJECTIVES: To assess the rate and mode of inheritance of familial cluster headache in a tertiary referral centre for headache. To describe the clinical features of familial cluster headache. METHODS: A retrospective study conducted between 2007 and 2017. Cluster headache was confirmed in probands and affected relatives.

The characteristics of digenic familial exudative vitreoretinopathy.

AIM: To describe and analyse the clinical and genetic characteristics of digenic familial exudative vitreoretinopathy (FEVR). METHODS: The study cohort consisted of patients with FEVR (n = 13) to identify patients with two mutations in two different genes. A genetic analysis of the LRP5, FZD4, TSPAN12, and ZNF408 genes was performed with next-generation sequencing (NGS). The genotype data obtained from the patients with FEVR were analysed and correlated with their clinical manifestations. They were then further evaluated in conjunction with other data that were available for these genes. The

Imaging characteristics of familial Wolfram syndrome.

Wolfram syndrome is a rare diffuse neurodegenerative disorder also known as DIDMOAD due to its characteristics of diabetes insipidus, diabetes mellitus, optic nerve atrophy and deafness. It is also associated with a wide variety of abnormalities of the central nervous system, urinary tract and endocrine glands. It may be familial or sporadic. Imaging findings include absence of the short T1 nature of the pituitary posterior lobe, atrophy of the optic nerve, chiasma, and tracts. Atrophy of the brain stem and cerebellum has also been reported. We describe a 15-year-old boy and an 11-year-old gir

Characteristics of incisor-premolar hypodontia in families.

Nonsyndromic tooth agenesis is a genetically and phenotypically heterogenous condition. It is generally assumed that different phenotypic forms are caused by different mutated genes. We analyzed inheritance and phenotype of hypodontia and dental anomalies in 214 family members in three generations of 11 probands collected for genetic linkage study on incisor-premolar hypodontia (IPH). Our analysis confirms the autosomal-dominant transmission with reduced penetrance of IPH. The prevalence of hypodontia and/or peg-shaped teeth was over 40% in first- and second-degree relatives and 18% in first c
