Epicardial fat necrosis is a rare cause of benign chest pain. Its physiopathological mechanism is unknown. Diagnosis is easily performed through radiological investigations that show a round opacity of fat density limited by a dense pseudo-capsule in the anterior mediastinum, close to the heart.

The processes that course with intraabdominal fat necrosis often manifest with acute or subacute abdominal pain; these clinical findings can be caused by various conditions, including epiploic appendagitis, omental infarction, encapsulated fat necrosis, mesenteric panniculitis, appendicitis, diverticulitis, and certain neoplasms. In this context, although the anatomic location of the pain and accompanying symptomatology can help orient the diagnosis, there is a risk of unnecessary surgery. Imaging tests like ultrasonography and especially computed tomography are essential for diagnosing intraa…

INTRODUCTION: Panniculitis is a group of diseases that affect subcutaneous fat tissue and clinically manifest as nodules. Its pathogenesis is not entirely clear, and it is usually asymptomatic. The confirma tory diagnosis is histological.
OBJECTIVE: To describe the clinical and histopathological characteristics of a case of fat necrosis, a specific form of panniculitis in the newborn (NB).
CLINICAL CASE: 40-week female NB, born by emergency cesarean section due to fetal tachycardia with meconium, Apgar score 7-8-9. She required oxygen and positive pressure for five minutes. On the fifth day …

Subcutaneous fat necrosis is an uncommon disease that may be complicated with potentially fatal hypercalcemia or with nephrocalcinosis. We report on the case of a patient with a history of significant perinatal asphyxia, hospitalized for a urinary tract infection. Lesions of subcutaneous fat necrosis were noted, with asymptomatic hypercalcemia at 3.9mmol/L. A renal ultrasound was performed and showed echogenic medullary pyramids bilaterally, consistent with nephrocalcinosis and left nephrolithiasis. The treatment of hypercalcemia included hyperhydration, a diuretic and corticosteroids. Progres…

Subcutaneous fat necrosis of newborns is a transient, benign process in full- term or postmature neonates. It is associated with perinatal distress. Newborn stress inhibits immature enzyme system, which already has relative inability to desaturate saturated fatty acids. It leads to fat crystillisation and necrosis. Skin biopsy revealed necrotic focus and crystallisation in fat cells. Hypercalcemia may be a potential complication.

Subcutaneous fat necrosis of the newborn (SCFN) is an uncommon condition and may be complicated by hypercalcemia. A 28-day-old neonate, presenting with SCFN, hypercalcemia and nephrocalcinosis was managed with intravenous saline followed by furosemide, oral prednisolone, potassium citrate and etidronate.

A pericardial lipoma is a rare benign cardiac tumor, and fat necrosis is an uncommon clinical condition. This is the first reported case of pericardial lipoma with fat necrosis, which showed clinical presentations of a malignant tumor despite imaging findings consistent with benign lipoma. (Level of Difficulty: Advanced.).

Membranous fat necrosis (MFN) a distinct degenerative process of adipose tissue, is characterised by the presence of membranocystic lesions (MCLs) superimposed on a background of typical traumatic-type fat necrosis. MCLs are cysts, of varying size and shape, that are lined by an eosinophilic, crenulated membrane, having the staining properties of ceroid. Although MFN has been documented in varying systemic adipose tissue sites and in tumours, the pathogenesis of this pathological curiosity is unknown. To date, an ischemic basis for MFN has been the most proximate, and atherosclerosis and venou…

A boy weighing 4500 g was born at 41 weeks' gestation by Cesarean section due to fetal distress. The pregnancy was complicated by gestationa … ially- oriented, refractile, needle-shaped crystals (Figure 2), which was diagnosed as subcutaneous fat necrosis. The diagnosis of subcutaneous fat necrosis of the newborn was made. Laboratory studies revealed hypocalcemia at 1.65 mmol/L, hypomagnesemia at 0.48 mmol/L, and hypokalemia at 3 mmol/L. The infant received calcium, magnesium, vitamin D, and potassiu …

A term infant developed subcutaneous fat necrosis of the newborn (SFNN) 17 days following completion of therapeutic hypothermia for hypoxic ischaemic encephalopathy. Initial calcium was normal, however hypercalcaemia requiring hyperhydration and furosemide developed at 4 weeks. Parathyroid hormone and vitamin D were suppressed. At 13 months, she remains on low calcium formula, and has gross motor delay, central hypotonia and early hand preference. Review of 102 articles yielded 119 SFNN cases. Asphyxia was reported in 78%. Twenty-one per cent had hypoglycaemia. Twenty per cent underwent therap…

Fat necrosis of the breast is a benign condition that most frequently affects peri-menopausal women. It can mimic breast cancer clinically or radiologically. In other cases it can obscure malignant lesions. The core of this review is derived from a MEDLINE database literature search from 1966-2004. Further references were from lateral search. In this paper, we review the pathogenesis and pathology clinical and radiological features of fat necrosis of the breast. The implication of fat necrosis in the management of patients with breast lump is also discussed. Fat necrosis of breast is a complex…

Subcutaneous fat necrosis of the newborn (SFNN) developed in a 1-week-old black boy. His mother had received numerous medications for eclampsia. Birth was by Caesarean section and complicated by meconium aspiration. There were numerous nodules over the back, buttocks and extremities that yielded a caseous-like material. Microscopically, these nodules showed crystallization and necrosis of the fat. Hypoglycemia, pneumonia, oliguria, thrombocytopenia, seizures and urinary infection were associated with the cutaneous problem and led to a fatal outcome 2 weeks after birth.

Subcutaneous fat necrosis (SCFN) is a rare fat tissue inflammation of the newborn. Risk factors include cord prolapse, perinatal asphyxia, therapeutic hypothermia, meconium aspiration, and sepsis. When present, hypercalcemia comes with lethargy, hypotonia, irritability, vomiting, polyuria, polydipsia, constipation, and dehydration. Kidney injury must be avoided. SCFN is often completely autoresolutive.

Subcutaneous fat necrosis presents as red-to-bluish, indolent, well-circumscribed, subcutaneous nodules and plaques, unusually in healthy infants. Histologically, a lobular panniculitis with a mixed inflammatory infiltrate is seen. Characteristic crystalloid structures can be found within some of the lipocytes and, most prominently, within macrophages. This rarely diagnosed skin disease is harmless and self-limited, yet the associated hypercalcaemia has a high complication rate.

BACKGROUND: Fat necrosis is a well-recognized complication following autologous fat grafting. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the incidence of fat necrosis after large-volume fat grafting and identify risk factors for fat necrosis.
METHODS: A retrospective review was performed on 83 consecutive patients who underwent large-volume fat grafting (>100 cc) to the breast performed by the senior author (L.P.B.) between September of 2011 and May of 2016. Fat necrosis was defined as palpable nodules, or nodules seen on imaging.
RESULTS: A total of 148 breasts underwent 170 autologous fat t…
