Fear-relevant change detection in spider-fearful and non-fearful participants.

Features of threatening stimuli are proposed to be processed fast and automatically, as they call for immediate attention. Phobic patients typically exhibit these attentional biases for stimuli that are relevant for their particular type of fear. In the present study, it was examined whether a change detection paradigm can be used to study attentional bias for fear-related stimuli. Twenty-five spider-fearful and 25 non-fearful participants were confronted with a series of pictures, in which sometimes a spider gradually appeared, sometimes a fear-irrelevant stimulus appeared, and sometimes no c

Fears, phobias, and preparedness: toward an evolved module of fear and fear learning.

An evolved module for fear elicitation and fear learning with 4 characteristics is proposed. (a) The fear module is preferentially activated in aversive contexts by stimuli that are fear relevant in an evolutionary perspective. (b) Its activation to such stimuli is automatic. (c) It is relatively impenetrable to cognitive control. (d) It originates in a dedicated neural circuitry, centered on the amygdala. Evidence supporting these propositions is reviewed from conditioning studies, both in humans and in monkeys; illusory correlation studies; studies using unreportable stimuli; and studies fro

Panic disorder and agoraphobia: fear of fear or fear of the symptoms produced by hyperventilation?

Two versions of the fear-of-fear hypothesis of panic disorder are discussed. The fear-of-the-somatic-effects-of-fear version, which is distinguished from the classical conditioning version, is compared with the hyperventilation theory of panic disorder and agoraphobia. The fear-of-the-somatic-effects-of-fear hypothesis is criticized on the basis of its inability to explain adequately (a) the initiation of panic attacks, (b) the growth in intensity of panic attacks, and (c) the termination of panic attacks. The tenability of the hyperventilation theory is supported by evidence from programs of

Beyond fear: dual task interventions are effective for fear and non-fear memories.

Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is no longer conceptualised solely as a fear-based condition, as traumatic memories often involve other emotions (shame, anger, and sadness). Although the dominant emotion of a memory is routinely assessed in the EMDR protocol, treatment progress is typically tracked via overall distress (SUD), and research has rarely examined whether the dual-task affects memories beyond fear. Yet emotions vary in arousal, approach/avoidance direction, and self-relevance, suggesting that the magnitude of dual-task effects may depend on the dominant emotion. As a first step

Subjective fear, interference by threat, and fear associations independently predict fear-related behavior in children.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Several information-processing models highlight the independent roles of controlled and automatic processes in explaining fearful behavior. Therefore, we investigated whether direct measures of controlled processes and indirect measures of automatic processes predict unique variance components of children's spider fear-related behavior. METHOD: Seventy-seven children between 8 and 13 years performed an Affective Priming Task (APT) measuring associative bias, a pictorial version of the Emotional Stroop Task (EST) measuring attentional bias, filled out the Spider Anxi

When Fear of Childbirth is Pathological: The Fear Continuum.

OBJECTIVES: Given that prepartum psychiatric symptoms have been reported to be associated with postpartum disorders, focusing on the prepartum period appears of prime importance. The aim of the current study was threefold: (a) to identify the prevalence rates of women suffering from fear of childbirth (FOC) and tokophobia (b) to explore the association between FOC, obstetrical and psychopathological variables and (c) to identify the independent predictors of the intensity of FOC symptoms, FOC and tokophobia. METHODS: at 36 weeks' gestation, 98 women completed questionnaires assessing FOC, pre

The fear of fear concept: evidence in favour of multidimensionality.

In recent years, questions have been raised regarding the dimensionality of existing measures of fear of fear. This is an important issue that needs to be addressed if the dimension(s) of any scale purporting to assess fear of fear are to guide theory and research. One of the most widely used measures of fear of fear comprises a set of two scales: the Agoraphobic Cognitions Questionnaire (ACQ) and the Body Sensations Questionnaire (BSQ). In the present study, the dimensional nature of both measures was empirically examined using a confirmatory approach. It was also determined whether the dimen

Alteration of fear behaviors in sleep-deprived adolescent rats: increased fear expression and delayed fear extinction.

Disruption of sleep due to acute or chronic stress can lead to changes in emotional memory processing. Sleep disturbances are highly prevalent in post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), but still, the contribution of sleep deprivation on the susceptibility to PTSD has received little attention. To determine whether rapid eye movement sleep deprivation (SD) alters the development of fear expression or fear-associated memory impairment in adolescent rats, we performed animal emotional behavior tests using an SD animal model with the flowerpot technique. SD rats showed an increase in locomotor act

"All we have to fear is fear itself": Paradigms for reducing fear by preventing awareness of it.

Research on unconscious fear responses has recently been translated into experimental paradigms for reducing fear that bypass conscious awareness of the phobic stimulus and thus do not induce distress. These paradigms stand in contrast to exposure therapies for anxiety disorders, which require direct confrontation of feared situations and thus are distressing. We systematically review these unconscious exposure paradigms. A Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses-based search yielded 39 controlled experiments based on 10 paradigms that tested whether exposure without

The role of fear in hierarchical processing of fear-related stimuli.

According to a widely accepted definition, visual objects are composed of hierarchical structures classified as either global or local, depending on their location in the hierarchy. Previous research has demonstrated that fear and anxiety are associated with faster identification of local level stimuli, supporting the popular view that fear narrows attention. Nevertheless, the modulating role of fear in hierarchical processing has never been examined for stimuli that are personally relevant. To fill this research gap, we used emotional modification of a global-local paradigm to examine hierarc

Are fear of cancer recurrence and fear of progression equivalent constructs?

BACKGROUND: The predominant definition of fear of cancer recurrence (FCR) conflates FCR with fear of progression (FOP). However, this assumption has never been tested. Importantly, if FCR and FOP are distinct and have different predictors, existing interventions for FCR may not be equally effective for survivors who fear progression rather than recurrence of their disease. The present study aimed to determine whether FCR and FOP are empirically equivalent; and whether they are predicted by the same theoretically derived variables. METHODS: Three hundred and eleven adults with a history of bre

Are smartphones a tool to cope with the fear of childbirth? The correlation between the fear of loss of connection and the fear of childbirth.

OBJECTIVE: With the spread of smartphones, they have become an indispensable part of life, and nomophobia (No-Mobile-Phone Phobia) has emerged. METHODS: The present research is a cross-sectional study and was conducted with 3,870 primiparous pregnant women between April and May 2022. The research data were collected using the Personal Information Form, Nomophobia Questionnaire, and Wijma Delivery Expectancy/Experience Questionnaire. RESULTS: The Wijma Delivery Expectancy/Experience Questionnaire score of the pregnant women who participated in the study was 22.3% (n=863) had a clinical fear o

The benzodiazepine alprazolam dissociates contextual fear from cued fear in humans as assessed by fear-potentiated startle.

BACKGROUND: The startle reflex is potentiated by aversive states. It has been proposed that phasic startle potentiation to a threat cue and sustained startle potentiation to contextual stimuli reflect distinct processes mediated by different brain structures. The present study tested the hypothesis that alprazolam would reduce the sustained startle potentiation to contextual threats but not the startle potentiation to a threat cue. METHODS: Sixteen healthy subjects received each of four treatments: placebo, .5 mg of alprazolam, 1 mg of alprazolam, and 50 mg of diphenhydramine (Benadryl) in a

Fears and fear-related cognitions in children with selective mutism.

Selective mutism (SM) is classified under the category of anxiety disorders in DSM-5 [1], although concrete fears that underlie the condition are not specified contrary to all other anxiety disorders. Given the lack of studies systematically investigating fears in SM, content and frequency of concrete fears as well as related cognitions have remained unclear so far. One hundred and twenty-four participants [M = 13.25 years (SD = 3.24), range 8-18 years] with SM (n = 65), social phobia (SP n = 18) or with typical development (TD n = 51) took part in an online survey. Participants with SM (n = 6

Claustrophobic fear behavior: a test of the expectancy model of fear.

The present study examined Reiss and McNally's expectancy model in the prediction of claustrophobic fear, measured across three domains. Non-clinical subjects (N = 117) reporting claustrophobic concerns were administered a behavioral approach test to a claustrophobic chamber. Consistent with the expectancy model, danger expectancy, anxiety expectancy and the interaction of anxiety sensitivity and anxiety expectancy accounted for unique portions of behavioral performance, with other variables partialled out. The expectancy model variable set, however, did not meaningfully relate to subjective f

Fearful and non-fearful panic attacks in a student population.

The phenomenon of non-fearful panic was investigated in a sample of 83 university students who reported histories of unexpected panic attacks. Based on severity ratings of individual panic symptoms, Ss were classified as having panic attacks characterized by No Fear (N = 22), Low Fear (N = 30) or High Fear (N = 31). The three groups were similar with respect to the age-of-onset of panic attacks, the frequency with which they experienced panic and the severity of panic symptoms unrelated to fear. However, Ss reporting fear during panic attacks were more likely to engage in avoidance behaviour a
