[Filariasis].

Filariasis are vector-transmitted parasitoses, exclusively tropical, except for dirofilariosis. Their impact differs according to the type of filaria and the induced immune response. The diagnosis is made based on the presence of dermatological or lymphatic manifestations, acute or chronic, associated with usually extended stays in an endemic country. It can also be established following a laboratory examination revealing hypereosinophilia or correspond to the incidental finding of microfilariae (blood or skin). The visualization of the embryonic and/or adult parasite confirms the infection. F…

Filariasis.

Filariasis is found in many tropical and subtropical countries. Approximately 10% of patients with filariasis enter the end stage of the disease known as elephantiasis. The obstruction of the lymphatic system leads to massive swelling and ulceration, especially of the legs, causing deformity and difficulty in movement and function. The condition is preventable with control of the vector and early drug therapy.

The immunology of filariasis. Scientific Working Group on Filariasis.

This report summarizes the available information on the immunology of filariasis, and discusses immunodiagnosis and the immunological factors influencing the host-parasite relationship in lymphatic filariasis and onchocerciasis. Several areas that require further research are identified, particularly concerning the development of new serological techniques, and the fractionation of specific antigens. The problems associated with vaccine development are considered and the importance of finding better animal models for research is stressed.

Extralymphatic Filariasis.

Filariasis caused by nematodes affects the structure and function of lymphatic vessels. Lymphedema due to lymphatic blockage and lymphadenitis is the usual mode of presentation of filariasis. However, rarely extralymphatic filariasis has been reported in uncommon sites, including skin and soft tissue. Wuchereria (W.) bancrofti is the most common nematode causing extralymphatic filariasis. We report a rare case of a 25-year-old man with live extralymphatic filarial infestation presenting as a facial subcutaneous soft-tissue swelling confirmed by ultrasonography (USG), which revealed the filaria…

Lymphatic Filariasis.

Lymphatic filariasis (LF) is a parasitic infection that is spread by mosquitos infected with worm larvae. Several factors will affect the global prevalence of LF in the future. A growing body of evidence suggests that climate change will influence the spread of parasitic diseases and their vectors. Lymphatic filariasis is the leading cause of permanent disfigurement and the second most common cause of long-term disability in the world.

Lymphatic filariasis.

(1) Lymphatic filariasis is a set of parasitic diseases that are endemic in tropical and subtropical regions and can be disabling in the long term. (2) The standard antiparasitic drug for adults is oral diethylcarbamazine. Ivermectin is an alternative, especially for patients with intercurrent onchocercosis or loasis.
