We herein disclose the first example of metal-free, redox-umpolung-enabled catalytic fluorination of α-branched ketones with nucleophilic fluorine by the judicious choice of an oxidant. The strategic use of cyclopropyl malonoyl peroxide in hypervalent iodine(III) catalysis expands the modularity and generality in the construction of α-fluorinated ketones with ideally orthogonal reactivity space, avoiding competing oxidation processes. Characteristic for this transformation is its operational simplicity, mild reaction conditions, and gram-scale synthetic ability.

In a search for potent antileishmanial drug candidates, eighteen rhodacyanine analogues bearing fluorine or perfluoroalkyl substituents at various positions were synthesized. Fluorinated psychopharmacological agents were measured with fluorine-19 nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy in the brain of intact rats that had been treated with fluphenazine. These in vivo experiments were compared to in vitro measurements of fluphenazine-treated rats. A high-field shift was observed in both in vivo and in vitro measurements. On the basis of the in vitro measurements, fluphenazine concentration in the brains of treated rats was estimated. Our observations demonstrate the feasibility of this technique for determining fluorinated neuroleptics in live mammals.

The construction of carbon-fluorine bonds is an important yet challenging task in organic synthesis. Transition metal-catalyzed/-mediated C-F bond forming processes have recently emerged as a viable strategy and provided access to value-added monofluorinated compounds. A dramatic increase in fluorination methods using inexpensive and earth-abundant copper can be seen in the past decade surpassing those using palladium and silver. This review discusses the recent development of Cu-catalyzed/-mediated formation of C(sp2 )-F and C(sp3 )-F bonds.

Fluoride-containing media have been widely adopted in the post-treatment of ZSM-5 zeolites for heterogeneous catalysis.
