Poisoning by gases in our area is an important problem due to its high incidence. In the specific case of carbon monoxide poisoning, this is the main cause of death by poisoning in our environment, on many occasions coexisting with cyanide poisoning. Both poisonings can be severe, their diagnosis being based on the mere suspicions of the doctor. Besides, their importance lies in the fact that both poisonings have a very specific treatment. Nitrosifying gases are nitrogen-oxygen mixtures which are used in many branches of industry or which develop as a sideproduct. They are toxic already in a relatively slight concentration. It is reported on 12 patients who on account of an accident in a Berlin metal factory fell ill with an acute intoxication by nitrosifying gas. Symptoms, clinical and paraclinical findings are compiled and compared with the cases described in literature. Therapeutic orders are discussed.

Exposure to toxic gases which can induce serious health effects, can occur in the working as well as in general environment, including home. The severity of gas poisoning is determined by its physical and chemical characteristics, intensity and duration of exposure, and concomitant diseases and injuries in the poisoned person. Eight cases of poisoning in workers cleaning silo are presented. Silo gas, produced during fermentation of vegetable material, contains very toxic nitrogen oxides. In this group three workers died within silo, four patients were hospitalized (one of them with acute toxic pulmonary oedema, two with sings of pneumonia, one had only transient decrease of consciousness) and recovered without detectable sequelae. One patient, in general good condition, refused hospitalization and recovered.

Inhalation exposure to harmful substances in the working as well as in general environment may induce serious health effects. The severity of gas poisoning is determined primarily by its physical and chemical characteristics, and the level and duration of exposure. Toxic effects from gas inhalation involve simple asphyxia, respiratory irritation, systemic toxicity, and a combination of these mechanisms. This article describes the characteristics, types of exposure and health effects of most common irritant and asphyxiant gases, including carbon monoxide, hydrogen cyanide and ammonia.
