Selye's general adaptation syndrome: stress-induced gastro-duodenal ulceration and inflammatory bowel disease.

Hans Selye in a note to Nature in 1936 initiated the field of stress research by showing that rats exposed to nocuous stimuli responded by way of a 'general adaptation syndrome' (GAS). One of the main features of the GAS was the 'formation of acute erosions in the digestive tract, particularly in the stomach, small intestine and appendix'. This provided experimental evidence for the view based on clinical data that gastro-duodenal (peptic) ulcers could be caused by stress. This hypothesis was challenged by Marshall and Warren's Nobel Prize (2005)-winning discovery of a causal association betwe…

[THE SIGNIFICANCE OF THE SYSTEM APPROACH IN THE STUDY OF THE GENERAL ADAPTATION SYNDROME' REACTIONS].

The article discusses the problems of the process of environmental adaptations appearance which are based on the general principles of functional systems' constitution. The value of the theory of functional systems development as the basis for physiological cybernetics (P. Anokhin, 1935) is also given. A general adaptation syndrome ("a stress - syndrome") that was discovered by H. Selye is chosen as an example to explain the development of the stages of the functional system of the stress, the sequence and value of ongoing physiological reactions and negative feedback interactions. The stress …

[Stress, allostasis and organ failure : On the 90th anniversary of the first description of the "general adaptation syndrome"].

A groundbreaking paper by the endocrinologist Hans Selye was published in Nature 90 years ago in which he developed a comprehensive theory o … ntext, it would have been more accurate to use the effects of stress, i.e., strain, to describe the general adaptation syndrome rather than the triggering factors. Analogous to overstretching a solid until it fractures, exceeding the repair and defence systems of living organisms leads to a point of no return, characterized by organ damage and ultimately death. Selye's resea …

Risk of Poor Neonatal Adaptation Syndrome Among Infants Exposed to Second-Generation Atypical Antipsychotics Compared to Antidepressants: Results From the National Pregnancy Registry for Psychiatric Medications.

Objective: While poor neonatal adaptation syndrome (PNAS) has been particularly well described among infants exposed to antidepressants, specifically selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) and serotonin-norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors (SNRIs), this is not the case for second-generation antipsychotics (SGAs). In 2011, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a drug safety warning regarding fetal antipsychotic exposure and risk for PNAS and extrapyramidal symptoms (EPS). The primary objective of this study was to examine the risk for PNAS among infants exposed to SGAs compare

[Risks of surgery and anesthesia and optimization of anesthesiological maintenance of abdominal delivery].

The paper deals with abdominal labor pain relief in pregnant women at high risk for impaired development of the general adaptation syndrome: significant sympathicotonia, placental ischemia-reperfusion syndrome, and systemic inflammatory response syndrome. All these syndromes are attended by either impaired oxygen transport or a high risk for the occurrence of such at surgery. The detection and correction of these impairments in development of the general adaptation syndrome in pregnancy, which are provided by the author's modified rating scale for risks of surgery and anesthesia, contribute to…
